Back to the lyrium and various types... since there is lyrium called "corrupted lyrium," it might be the result of the same forces that corrupted the darkspawn originally. Perhaps the closer something is to a slumbering Old God underground, such as a Primeval Thaig, the more likely it is to become corrupt. Is there an Old God (potential Archdemon) in the vicinity of the Primeval Thaig? Who knows. However, the interest the Grey Wardens took in the place cannot be overlooked. It's something to consider at least.

I would agree, but the darkspawn seem to be intentionally avoiding that Thaig.  If whatever is has to do with an archdemon, they should be flocking to it.  It seems like whatever's down there even the darkspawn don't want any part of.

Hrm.  Unless the Architect (wait, is there a "the"?  Damnit all, we're back to titles vs names!) pulled a Leliana and is alive no matter what, and is doing something to keep them away from the trapped old god.  He's no friend of mankind but he doesn't want another blight anymore than they do.

But one question has been tickling me: When the idol is first discovered, Hawke easily lifts it with one hand, Varric throws it to Bartrand, and it seemed rather small in their hands anyway. How exactly did Meredith create a large 2 handed sword from this?

Another question: Did Meredith craft it herself? Did someone else? If someone else, why didn't they succumb to its influence? Or did he and Meredith killed him after the fact?

I think Meredith only had a portion of it, and if anything, probably infused or cast the sword it in. Just enough to still be recognizable as the idol though (since Varric makes mention of it when Meredith does the grand reveal). With mages more or less under her thumb, Meredith very well may have sacrificed a few to craft the weapon. Or maybe the idol, when near what was possibly a normal greatsword, did the work for her - became what "it" felt/read/interpretted that she needed. Power that morphs itself to the desires or delusions of its would-be owner.

Well, sadly there is a bug or something regarding the Architect. When you meet Nathaniel, he may say that he was spared no matter what you imported. So that's left up in the air. Could be that the being is still alive, or that his influence was much broader than we know. Or...there is another.

Regarding sentience and trapped or infused gods/demons - didn't Flemeth cast part of her essense into the amulet (that Hawke must take to Sundermount) so that she could keep her "appointment?" Wasn't it her insurance really to preserve her life in case something went awry? That may just be a really old trick, and the idol is one such insurance policy from ancient times.

That would be awesome if proven to be true in later games.

Hrm.  I just had a more mundane theory.  What if red lyrium is just a result of some geological circumstance?  It's stated that the primordial thaig is deeper than anyone else goes.  Look at how diamonds are formed.  Here's a reader's digest version of wiki:

"Most natural diamonds are formed at high-pressure high-temperature conditions existing at depths of 140 to 190 kilometers (87 to 120 mi) in the Earth mantle. Carbon-containing minerals provide the carbon source, and the growth occurs over periods from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years (25% to 75% of the age of the Earth). Diamonds are brought close to the Earth surface through deep volcanic eruptions by a magma, which cools into igneous rocks known as kimberlites and lamproites."

To put that in perspective, the deepest mine on Earth is in Africa and goes about 2 and a half miles down.  They're working on robots to do mining because it's gotten so deep that humans can't do it anymore.  Due to the depth, it's about 160 degrees at the bottom.  For those not familiar with the Earth's makeup, deep below your feet is an a massive ocean of molten magma (lava).  So let's assume lyrium is like any other natural mineral and has been there all along.  This lyrium has been exposed to a high temp. enviorment for billions of years.  And who knows how high, or high pressure?  Diamonds are formed extremely deep and natural conditions have pushed them near the surface, the same could have happened with this lyrium.

Granted, this is an RPG and a wizard or wizard-god always did it... but it's possible this is more mundane than we think.

So, the red lyrium is our red herring? It wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't some less-than-spectacular item that is tossed into the mix in order to stir up speculation. That's sort of the bittersweet aspect with any bit of entertainment with a fanbase - we immerse ourselves in some new world and try to dig deeper into every little granual within it.

But, that being said, I hope it winds up being something substantial. I love when the pieces all fall together and the mysteries are solved or made clear. It just feels nice and tidy that way.

Nice bit of research by the way! Image IPB

Does the lyrium have an official name?

Yep this would make the whole deal with the idol far more interesting than just as a plot device to make Meredith insane.

ETA and I just realised this is a necro'ed thread.

That's ok. I'mglad you necro'd the thread, as this particular theory i find the most fascinating of all. The idol as some long forgotten's entities "ressurection insurance policy".

Well they do have the same hat, Flemeth and the woman on the idol.

Not to nudge this corpse much...(and it might be interesting to see how our 4-month old theories have evolved, if at all)...but the headpiece on the idol might be closer to Meredith's. Flemeth's has the little flange-y things on the side.

I blame fashion in the whole of Thedas. It hasn't been getting the attention it deserves. Orlais has been too greedy with the runway.

I suppose it does... you're going to make me have to look at that thing again, aren't you?

Ughhh.

The idol's spike seems to be growing out of it's head rather than any kind of headdress. So it looks more like Meredith's but...

I thought Orlisian fashion was just about shoes and powdered wigs?
