Can someone help me with a good Varric build? I have never played a rogue in either DA: O or DA2( still on my first play through on DA 2). I'm a Elemental Mage, I run with Aveline(tank) Anders(Healers), and Varric Range on hard.
Thanks in advance

At the start, put all points into cunn... 40 is the magic number.

I prefer to make use of his great auto attack speed and use the auto crits on stunned targets to transfer points from dex into more cun:

In my experience this still allows him to crit about 90% of the time, without a single point in dex. At level 26, all you need is 64 atk from gear to get a 100% hit chance with Heroic Aura. Cun will be close to the cap at this point for massive crit damage. Stamina is no issue with Follow-Through and the low amount of skills to use.

As long as Varric has his special archery tree filled out, the rest is just salad dressing. Blindside is stupidly good though, as is Brand if you're rolling a warrior/mage group. And he's an awesome misdirect monkey
Out of curiosity, has anybody made a stealth Varric?

Why would you waste a point giving him 100% crit versus stunned targets? Stun durations on nightmare are minute, and my Varric hit end-game crit% numbers of 80+.
Varric needs the middle parts of his specialty tree (Kickback and the stamina regen bonus can safely be skipped), Armistice, Goad, Speed/Precision, and then Fatiguing Fog/Chameleon's Breath. After that, pretty much anything works. Always get Blindside, it's a one-point wonder.

Of course you can get 80% crit chance without the talent, but I doubt you had close to 200% crit damage. If a single skill point frees up a massive amount of stat points that's not a bad deal.

I don't understand. You still have to have a decent attack, which means that Varric is going to need between 30 and 40 points of dexterity end-game, regardless. My last Varric ended the game with upwards of 60 cunning, before his rune of valiance.
Taking a single skill to get 100% crit rate for very, very absurdly short amounts of time in which you'll score nothing but glancing blows unless you invest enough dex to get a more than decent crit rate regardless doesn't seem like a good trade-off. Also, at their default values, going pure-cunning or pure-dex is a bad idea, since +% damage is mediocre without decent base damage.

The damage from building Dex first over Cunn is irrelevant.
My recommendation is bias because the OP is using Varric as the main party rogue i.e. 40 Cunn will unlock any chest/ door in the game. Bianca does not need any Dex to equip whilst Varric gets along with every one else in your group & approves of most decisions Hawke will make.

varric only needs 30 cunning before deep roads, 21 dex + precision + heroic aura grants him 100% attack till he gets to 40 cunning, 3 levels later

I just mentioned that even on level 26, Varric will have 100% hit with a lousy +64 atk from equipment, which is a single decent neck. This is without a single point spent on dex.
Varric just screams "ignore dex". He has default weapon and equipment and gets massive atk boosts from his armor and Bianca's Song. I went with two mages, each with Horror and Stunning Blast. Along with Varrics own stuns, Miasmic Flask, Evade and Power, there was always something stunned for him to nuke. I don't say there is no other viable build, but you make it sound like it was a stupid idea, which it is not.
