1. Why can't I just, oh, cut my hand or something when I use Hemmorage, not STICK MY FRAKKING STAFF THROUGH ME.

2.  It seems like there's only one real offensive spell, or at least one designed for it, as compared to say Force Mage which has, oh, 4?

Blood magic seems to really shine when you start equipping those blood magic rings and items, which basically gives Hawke or Merrill an almost unlimited pool to cast.

1. Can't explain that one away.

2. Technically speaking, FM only has 1 genuine offensive spell (Fist of the Maker). The rest are CC moves. Are those CC moves best oriented for "offensive" use? Sure, but I could think of plenty of scenarios where you need Pull/Gravitic/Telekinetic to serve defensively (i.e. lock down enemies, un-stealth Assassins, etc. etc.). Now, whether or not you should be placing yourself in a position to use them defensively to begin with is something different, but Pull/Gravitic/Telekinetic can certainly qualify as defensive moves.  Also, Blood Magic gives you the ability to "continue" an aggressive approach when you run out of mana; in that way it's the most aggressive spell out there.

True, I guess I'm just thinking offensive as in "multiple spells to use on my enemies"

The only reason to go in blood magic is for the sustain. As said, gives you a giant mana pool. Hemorrhage is good but isn't a necessity.

Hemorrhage is the single best offensive spell available to mages. I don't see how anyone wouldn't take it.

Blood Mage tree is good, except for that stupid blood control skill. 5 seconds isn't long enough to be useful.

Grave Robber is great, especially when upgraded. Charge into mob and take yourself to full health.

Hemorrhage is ok, not devestating unless your 2H warrior staggers the group. The animation is weird though.

Blood Control isn't that bad. The target dies when it's over, so basically it's a OHK on normal enemies. Not that I'd take it since there are far more useful skills and limited points... but it isn't horrible.

The real advantage of blood magic, as people have said, is unlimited mana + sustains... the offensive powers in that tree are just icing on the cake. While it would be nice to have a few more blood magic attacks, or maybe a demonic summon, it's still a great tree.

The staff through the stomach thing is unsettling, I'll admit.  Hell, even cutting yourself with the staff takes too long... the murder knife should be pulled out to cast BM spells... whatever.  I'm sure they just did it so the spells would have longer casting times.

Free sustainables, limitless casting pool and tank survivability is what you take BM for. The rest is gravy. In fact I forgo WIL completely and raise my STR to 32, wearing heavy plate and adding Rock Armor to boot. Take Spirit Healer on top and your tanking ability surpasses Aveline's.
