I viewed it as the Qunari kept a very very tight leash on their mages and hated using them. Then they got their rumps kicked in the exalted March due to the enemies use of mages. Suddenly things are loosed up a bit as far as what mages can do and how many of them.

Hm... I'm not sure if the term "Saarebas" refers to only specific kinds of Mages, or trained Mages or whatnot. That Arvaraad you brought Ketojan too called you (or whatever Mage other than you is in your party) "Bas Saarebas". Made me think that the term refers to all Mages, but I could be wrong.

But man, Mages thought they had it tough in the Chantry Circles? lol

Well, they only seem to know some force spells and lightning spells.

Hey guess what, the lore says mages can't teleport either.
The gameplay is completely disjointed from lore.

That said, Saarebas in gameplay are powerful, but inflexible. They have 2 attacks and a teleport, that's it. They are in my experience the easiest mage type for a Templar to shut down completely, because they have nothing to fall back on unlike, say, a blood mage and telegraph their attacks more than most others.

Seeing how they lost their first war on Thedas against the mages of the circle my guess would be they would be training Saarebas in more spells to use in war. Anything to bring the enlightenment of the Qun to Thedas I guess.

DA2 codex entry notes how the qunari didn't as much lose their first war, but instead seemingly decided to withdraw when the war hit the most heavily native population of territories they've conquered and controlled, creating danger of these natives getting wiped out entirely.

DAO codex mostly made it sound the outcome came down to numbers disparity -- the qunari landed in large force but it wasn't as large as combined forces of the rest of Thedas, obv.

Whether that was a retcon, is an open question.

He was upset that I shared a womb with saarebas.

I wanted to say, "We didn't really share. It's more she got my hand-me-down womb." But he attacked me so I couldn't make a joke. :/

You have obviously tainted the womb with your presence that it'd only bear a saarebas next. The man was entirely right in his reaction.

I'm sorry to bring up another of these 'Retcon! Arrrghhhbnlajgag!' Topics. But I have to ask, was this done about the Saarebas? In DAO there's a codex entry regarding the new exalted marches where it's stated that Saarebas were pathetic compared towards mages of the circle, yet here in DA2 they're one of the most dangerous mages to face (In my experience, atleast) Was this changed or is this just another case of the Qunari apparently being better then humans at absolutely everything?

Things have changed since the last wars, The Qunari shall return and this time the WILL NOT loose!

What I remember was that in DA:O the Mages if Thedas were the reason that the Qunari lost their invasion. The Qunari had mages but they were nothing like the mages from the circle who simply rained down fire on the Qunari and destroyed their fire catapults. I would think that the Circle would not want to admit this...so if it is part of Thedas lore then it must be something that the Chantey had a hard time admitting.

Only 50% of the next batch were Saarebas, though.

If their military leaders are as on the ball as the Arishok we have very little to fear.

That's pretty much how they explained a mage who did the same thing in DAO, anyway Posted Image  Said he's using illusion magic... not that different from rogue's decoy when you think about it.

I guess the tongue cutting out part was retconned. I think shortly before the release they released info saying that the ones who practice forbidden magic are the ones who have their tongues cut out. Though I suppose you could explain that as Sten just speaking in a general sense.

I think that Saarebas might have been retconned in strength but I can't be sure. I think the implication in DA 1's codex was that Qunari mages were naturally weaker than the rest of the mages. And I imagine the implication from the game was that they are very strong. Admittedly we only get Gennetivi's analysis on the subject but his work implies that they are weaker AND they are not allowed to reach full potential due to Qunari practices (because I think he mentions both points individually rather than saying that the former is caused by the latter). The game seems to contradict the Codes but it's still just one person's in universe viewpoint and analysis.

I thought the tongue cutting part was only if they were suspicious of the saarebas doing blood magic?
