DA2 is worse about forcing the party into melee than DA:O, because of how the additional waves spawn right on top of you, in dead-end rooms you've already cleared, etc.

Isnt that exaggerating just a bit?  Neither my Mage nor my Archer Rogue ever had to engage in melee combat unless I physically made them do so.

But other party members did.  Some part of your party engages in melee combat in nearly every encounter, regardless of how you build the party or who is in it.  Even if your whole party was mages and archers, some of them would end up in melee combat.

I'm describing the party's behaviour, not individual characters.  In terms of combat, it's a party-based game.  You control the whole party.  And that party is forced to engage in melee combat over and over agan throughout the game.

If you have a good tank/equipment you can keep ranged party members out of melee combat for a good portion of the time as well as use the ranged setting t ensure they run away (although this can get annoying when they run halfway across the map).

I have done some thinking and I'm just going to put it out there:

What was he going to say? His job during the interviews at the moment is to sell the game. If he says its crap who the hell would by the game. I am sure that is he could he would avoid talking about anything negative about the game at all -- but he isn't the one asking the questions.

Behind closed doors I'm sure they look at the feedback that is coming in and try to figure out all the things that went wrong and why. But you don't shout it from the rooftops when you are still trying to sell the game.

We should be glad he at least acknowledging that there are flaws.

You know... those "oh hey you found X, it goes to this random guy" quests could have been made a lot less goofy if they'd had "please find X" notes posted to the Chanter's Board, so that it made sense that you could find the people looking for all those Xs. And for pity's sake, they could have had cutscenes or at least more appropriate reactions for when the remains are found and taken to someone who cares... you find someone's sister's bones, and he reacts like you've returned his missing socks...

Oh but didn't you know? All those items Hawke finds have a nifty *PROPERTY of *Stickers on them that identify who they belong to

Its kind like how you were 8 and your mom gets you all these property of stickers to tag your school stuff.

Thats how the game developers view the gamers I guess.

I prefer the side quests in Origins. At least with the Irregular Quests, it lead to a final quest where had to make a choice.

I absolutely agree that those side-quests need appropriate reactions/cutscenes.Those random lines we get to hear when we return object X to person Y are absolutely immersion-breaking. Oh, and this Sister's Remains "quest" I will remember forever...
I find this guy, give him the remains and my Hawke says - "Try to keep track of your things"

Hmmm, this brings to mind finding the lost amulet in Lothering after getting the quest at the chanters board.  Even though you just get the "thank you" reward spiel, you also have the choice of telling the little boy what happened to his mother.

Gah, I felt so bad for the kid.  And this was a fetch quest!

Isn't it ironic that they cut corners on terrains to give us these additional fetch quests?
Truly stunning.

I do regret buying this game.....now I know that Mike Laidlaw was avoiding the truth about the product he's trying to sell. At the end of it all, everyone feels insulted! So what happens to such individuals? Their interviews have long term effects as to how their next game will sell. I won't even wish good luck.

Or a simple cutscene with Varric. "Oh, and by the way Hawke... this is probably beneath you, but there are a lot of people who have posted rewards for things they've lost. You seem the sort to get around, so don't feel like you need to actively persue these items, but if you happen across anything interesting, I probably know where it goes."

^this is a great idea, actually.

I was simply thinking   the same as the poster before...that they could have done a "lost and found" board, listing all  those missing items and who you should return them to when you find them.  But getting spy-master Varric involved would have been even more cool.

I guess the  situation could be made worse by having Morrigan tell the kid about his mother.

Morrigan: Your mother's dead, get over it!

Ooooh, blackstone irregulars! Some of the responses were so cringeworthy they made me laugh.

Not to beat a dead horse but:

The reason people generally don't say that DA2 combat is simpler than DA:O combat is because it isn't true. DA2 combat is actually more complex.

Nope.  Da2's combat is  simpler and easier.  It was Specifically designed that way

From Mike Laidlaw's own mouth:

Mike Laidlaw, lead designer of the game at BioWare, explained that he thought that the default Origins was too hard, and he adjusted the difficulty to compensate.

"I did feel Origins 'normal' [difficulty] was pushing too hard on the high side and no one wants to set their game to 'casual' unless they're comfortable being here just for the story, and that's fine. But as a player, I don't feel I should be able to pick what's arguably the default difficulty and get my ass handed to me again and again," Laidlaw said.

Feel free to read on.  He goes into great detail.

Can I just say, I didn't say DAII combat was either more simple or more complex - seeing as how my username is being quoted (someone was responding to me.)

I was saying that I can't understand why people don't quote actual examples when they are talking about combat instead of making generalisations like "combat is too easy" "combat is too complex" "combat is tedious" or whatever. Something like "the flanking circle was removed, backstab is now an ability and I like/hate that" makes for a better discussion.

^ Also, how does making the default difficulty "easier," make it less complex, necessarily? Maybe, maybe not. I think he's referring to things like easing people in with prerequisites for abilities etc. Simple and easy aren't necessarily synonymous.

That would explain a few things.  I always thought it was a goblin hiding in my basement somewhere who somehow magicallly snatched them from the laundry lol.  And thats what he makes his home out of is all these missing socks lol

Edit:  And I don't know why we're even debating the  "is DA:O's combat  harder than DA2's?"  question.

Didn't Laidlaw flat out BRAG about the fact that DA2's combat system was  specifically designed to be  simpler and easier so that, you know,  n00bs wouldn't quit after an hour into the game?

No he didnt. They make only normal easier.(and because of that casual,of course)

But hardcore and nightmare werent gimped.

About difficulty levels being rebalanced.  Not about the fact that combat on Harder difficulties was easier, because it isn't and they've never claimed that it was.

That's an interesting party/setup, looks like an interesting departure from the Vanguard 2HW, I'll give it a shot. I've been looking for a reason to do a mage playthrough anyway.

Well, The Brekker fight is maybe not what one considers if one complain about LONG combat against a mountain of hp.
Brekker was fun, challenging and short. Just like Meredith in the end.

Now, the Rock Wraith, the Varretal, the High Dragon (second in the bone Pit) and Pride Demon below dark town...
(Personally, I found the Rock Wraith and High Dragon the hardest, but that's prob just because of my party makeup etc.

Laidlaw really REALLY REALLY  hates Origins doesn't he. Did he dislike Brent Kowles and his work so much that he wanted to put his own "stamp" on the franchise so to speak. I have never actively had the urge to loathe a lead designer of any game until now. Congrats Mike!
