Not quite true. DA2 wasn't as expensive a project as DAO.  It doesn't need to sell as many copies as DAO did to make as much or more profit.

You should not be playing RPGs if you don't like them.

What if someone likes some things about RPGs but not others? Is he still allowed to play RPGs? Is he still allowed to have opinions about how RPGs should be designed?

You suck at trolling. Go to codex and get some practice.

"It's a classic case of narcissism."

the irony in this statement and in this thread is hilarious.

DA2 has its falws but is awesome, and the more I read people's overrating of DA1 makes me want to rethink my liking of it because the blind love for the faults in DA1 while baashing of those faults in DA2 is hilarious.

Its not about ignoring flaws in Origins ... im sure they were all pointed out ... but making the same mistakes AGAIN, while adding a lot of more ... its nothing they (Bioware) should be proud of ...

and still DA:O is by far superior to DA2 since the actual content outshine the flaws, which is not DA2 case ...

Meredith plays a significant role late in the story, but is largely  absent for the rest of the game. Why keep a prominent antagonist in the background for so long?

The "prominent antagonist" is a  staple of fantasy, be it the brooding eye of Sauron or the endless
hordes of the archdemon. For Dragon Age II, we wanted to attempt  something different and break the mold and try to vilify circumstance,  rather than a specific evil. It's a story of how heroes are made, not  born, and I think that by the same token, it's a story of how the  antagonist need not always be the villain. To me, that's a very human  tale. I believe the early game likely could have used some additional  appearances by Meredith, but we were likely being over-cautious of her  being perceived as a source of confusion or frustration for players: "I  think she's important, but she feels disconnected from my current  goals!"

I am a bit baffled by this reply. The prominent antagonist isnt a staple of fantasy -- its a staple of storytelling.
Sure you can make a story be just a look into someones daily life and have no tention -- documentary style -- but the moment you want tention you have a prominent antagonist. The "antagonist" could be the evil eye of Sauron or it could simply be poverty. A whole story about overcomming poverty. However if you don't show the character suffering from poverty that wouldn't make for much of a strugle.

I can understand that they didnt want to go for the "big bad a'la Sauron"-villian but as someone earlier said. Have us interact with them -- Meredith and Orsino -- and get to know them, maybe even like both of them and then force us to choose sides. That way we have grown to know them and through that can see both views more clearly. If this was done well we might end up feeling sorry for Meredith when she goes Sith on us cause we know she wasn't allways a 'bad' person and the end fight would become somewhat tragic instead of just generic boss fight.

it's too bad they can't be honest even about something this simple. If just because it makes me wonder if that isn't a sign of having internally skewed perception of what the game actually was/felt like.

Oh look, another one of these threads. Bioware made a game that wasn't what I wanted. Therefore it is bad, period. Bioware chose for better or worse to make something different than DAO2. Deal with it. Looking at it from a unbiased standpoint. DA2 is still a good game. And they can only go forward from here.

The general attitude around here stinks of entitlement. Sad and hilarious at the same time. Maybe if you voice your displeasure enough times they'll cave in and do exactly what you want the next time right?

Thank you for your advice. Not that it is very wise or worth remembering but at least you have tried

I don't know Mr. Laidlaw. I have no idea who he is. But please stop him. Do not let him continue. He is making everything worse. He is projecting his own likes and dislikes into an RPG (as far as my personal opinion of what an RPG is), and it fails terribly because he knows not what that even is, at least that what I get from the interviews.

Mr. Laidlaw is perfectly suited for action-RPG-hybrids. He is ill suited for RPG games.Good grief, talking about adding insult to injury.

No, no it realy isn't. The writing, the characters, and the story are all superior in DA2. The only things DA1 does outright better is the character system (i want to be a dwarf!!!), and the environemnts aren't repetive.

Otherwise equal.

Laidlaw could be fired today, and BIO will still make the same games. The docs are the bosses so they make the final decisions.

Yes, pardon me ever so much for not joining in with the haters. Whatever shall I do without your approval.

Especially hilarious coming from a 2 week old account without any registered games too. Now I almost feel insulted.

Oh well I thought as much, he made he's bed with DA2 and he's going to ride it down like the Captain from the Titanic. Next installment will be more of the same. Still looking forward to ME3 as its a different team working on that, but DA is pretty dead to me at least.

We get it, you're eager to bend over for your favorite corporation whenever they ask.  No need to keep advertising this.

On topic, I still don't support taking shots at anyone involved in the development process of any game, but even I have to admit this dude brings a lot of the heat he gets on himself.  He's very disconnected from his fanbase, and his excuses border on insulting a lot of the time.  Why Bioware continues to let him do interviews is beyond me.

Except that, you know, it's not.  It's riddled with bugs, it's filled with recycled content, and there are tons of issues related to combat that have everything to do with the game design and nothing to do with personal preference.

Do you see Dragon Age ever revisiting the traditional tactical gameplay found in Origins?
It really depends on the definition of tactical. For some, it simply means "slower." For others it means more complicated combat scenarios and more engaging/challenging foes. To the former, I would say no. I personally find the responsiveness and personality of the new combat system to be much better for Dragon Age as a whole. My experience with the game feels more like I'm in control, rather than issuing orders, and that direct correlation to my actions is something I really enjoy. This is speaking as a habitual PC pause-and-player.
---

A normal definition of 'tactical' would be: issuing orders to a small group.

Ok you don't like that playstyle thats fair enough, but trying to retrofit an old tactical engine based on giving orders into a vision of an action game probably isn't the wisest thing.

I hate the feeling of trying to be in control of 4 characters. If you had cut out the party members or made them completely AI controlled the feeling of being in control might have worked. I feel very much out of control as party members randomly run around like headless chickens that I try to herd in a neverending pausing loop.

In terms of speed, faster speed requires better controls or less options. If you want to go the fast way the rest of the interface needs to reflect that. If I'm supposed to manually dodge attacks like in a 'Street Fighter' clone I don't appreciate having a ton of complex features to handle at the same time. If the pace slows down, I'm free to handle more complexity. Superb controls or superb AI can free up some of our maintenance tasks and allow more speed and more complexity, but that is hard to do. My best example is some of the RTS games mainly SC that empowers the player with a high degree of complexity and a moderately fast speed.

In pause-and-play based games however the pause button wil always act as a bottle-neck. Faster speed means more pausing. Personally I think fluid play is more fun than more pausing. Slower pace allows for more fluid play in this context.

Entitlement is a word people throw around a lot to mock anyone who has a problem with the rushed, sloppy product that is DA2.

When a product is advertised as having certain objective qualities, and then doesn't have those qualities, that is a legitimate reason to gripe. "Entitlement" would only apply if Bioware gave games away out of the goodness of their golden saint hearts and people complained. DA2 is a product that I had to pay for, and will be judged accordingly.

Yup Mike's totally not aware of the backlash or he's buried his head in the sands on this one and is sticking to his guns. Still no admission that reusing the same cave or same house 20 times is pure laziness cause it's okay as long as there was more content. I got news for you Mike, your additional content boiled down to fetch quests that ended with,"here I found this!", "oh thank you! I don't know what I'd do without it".  Even the responses on GameSpot is pretty harsh.

He mustn't touch DA3!

No game is perfect. In fact every game has it's fair share of issues post release. Yes, even DAO did. A lot of them. The only difference was we had a toolset to fix the issues ourselves.
