If I wanted something that has Cinematic presentation... I buy a movie, I'm looking for a game where I can have massive spell battles with warriors and summoned monsters from both sides engaging in a epic battle THAT I AM CONTROLLING NOT WATCHING, I want to see fireballs and lightning bolts flying across the battlefield... DA:O doesn't do that, BG2 does.

If I wanted good story telling I'd buy a book.

Not the fantasy tripe in games like BG1/2, NWN1/2, DA:O, etc.

They shouldn't even try because their writing just comes off as juvenile garbage.

I don't recall anywhere in lord of the rings anyone getting annoyed at anything a villager said and so proceeded to kill them and then massacre the entire village... You can't do that in DA:O but you can in BG2.
Although I do miss the Bar-room brawls of BG1.

Getting annoyed at a villager and following by killing the entire village?

That is exactly the kind of juvenile GARBAGE I'm talking about, LOL.

The real crap is when you get annoyed in Fallout 3 and just kill somebody, and then everyone who was watching, then everyone else who knows your Karma.. hmm EVERYONE IN THE GAME

Yeah, that's pretty much a killer in every FPS/RPG combo... The minute you shoot someone that you aren't supposed to everyone knows about it.
Alternatively the minute you shoot someone from hiding even if you're firing a silent weapon they suddenly know exactly where you are regardless of how far away you are.

To be fair, there's some entertaining writing to be found in CRPGs, and that's especially true with DA:O. More than once I've laughed out loud at something a companion said, or smiled when one responded to something that I said in a way that I didn't expect. In my opinion, the companions really make this game. I keep playing to experience more of them! Stopping a blight is just typical fantasy stuff.

Once in a while you might find something humorous in the sunday paper comic section or on an online comic.

Doesn't mean there is good writing going on there.

Did you ever play PS:T? That game was packed full of excellent writing.

PS:T?

I said entertaining writing.  I play games because they entertain me.  I don't have the same expectations for fantasy RPG writing as I do for fantasy novel writing!  This game would suck if it was anything like a good fantasy novel!

And the companions in this game are fantastic!  How can you go on about inane babbling and then say that BG2 had good dialogue/companions/etc.?  Seriously.

PlaneScape: Torment may well be the only exception in the history of CRPG's.

Planescape Torment. Yeah the writing was fantastic, but I've never been compelled to play through the entire game.

Planescape: Torment. Probably the best writing and story ever written for an RPG.

On topic, BG2 and DA:O are both great RPGs, but neither deserves to be on the 'throne'. Not by a longshot.

Not much one man can do if the entire team is incompetent.

Why?  because I didn't know an obscure gaming acronym?

Or because I don;t like certain aspects of the game and vocalize them as ardently as the fanbois scream their love?

I was responding to the troll with that last point.  He's been touting BG2 as superior to DA:O but said that he ditched all of the DA:O companions as soon as possible because he couldn't stand their babbling.  As if the companions in BG2 weren't ten times worse and infinitely less entertaining (with some notable exceptions)!

Lets see... Wizardry 7, or maybe Ultima 4.

I could never really get into either series, but I haven't given them a serious try yet. Is Ultima 4 the one where you're developing Virtues?

Yes, your goal is to become 'the Avatar', or the embodiment of virtue. It's the first CRPG I ever played, and to this day it's still one of the best. (I actually still play it from time to time on a C64 emulator).

No, I say that mostly because you've just been acting like an *** in your replies.  You've yet to really offer anything insightful to this thread.  :P

Yeah I hear great things about both of those games, but these days I prefer turn based combat on portable systems and real-time(or pseudo-real time) on consoles or PCs. I just feel that those play styles are especially suited to those respective systems. I hear they are remaking a Wizardry game for DS though...

Wow, I'm sorry, but I came in to this thread a bit curious, and seemed to have found a bunch of people who act like they have the wrong hobby. Just a bunch of complaints about the characters, story or just the general way Bioware wanted to make the game. And it appears the complaints, to some degree, move beyond Dragon Age. If playing a game, and not understanding what it is going to be like, is such a huge problem, just read a book, considering that seems to have more of what people are looking for--added bonus, no poor gameplay to worry about.

Anyway, I can't really comment on BG2 vs DA:O. The characters and story in BG2 seemed interesting, but I couldn't get past the AD&D2 system. Perhaps a second attempt is in order though. As for DA:O, I'm enjoying it so far. Your basic fantasy tale, but amusing nonetheless.

People can complain about something and still like it. No matter how good something is there will always be something you wished could have been done better.

It can't really be rose-colored glass if you are still playing it. Nostalgia can only really exist if it is something that you haven't played in a while and you mind allows you to pretend it is better than it was. If you only played it last month then you can't really call it nostalgia.

No one is saying BG2 is absolutely perfect just that it is still the best there has been so far. Could it have been better? Yes. Is DA:O better? No.
