I'll have to go through BG1&2 to confirm, but my feeling is that the encounters in DAO are generally better and feel more thought out. I seem to remember far too many incidences of being bombarded by magical arrows from enemies I couldn't even see--call it "challenge" if you want; I call it stupid.

That's not to say BG is bad, but I think Bioware have offered up a very rewarding successor to that style which improves on the formula. I will say that I feel far more attached to some of the characters in DAO than I ever did in BG, with rare exception. I still love Minsc, but so does everyone.

I'm installing BG now so I can get a fresh perspective. Assuming of course I can stick with it while DAO beckons.

"Dragon Age Origins Dethrones Baldur’s Gate " No but it can have a throne of its own in another castle

I prefered BG1 to BG2 the AD&D2 rules & multi classing turned me off it

part of what made them great was that they broke new ground back then much the same as the Black Isle team did with Fallout & Planescape Torment

DAO is more of an evolution instead of a revolution

i think its fair to say i enjoyed the classics & cant fault the new BioWare offering too much

one day when we have more DLC/Mods or DA2 i will consider the franchise a classic in its own right

BG2 was already on the/a throne when DA:O was released so the only thing that could have happened to BG2 was for it to have been "dethroned."

Nostalgia aside, I think future iterations of Dragon Age, with the world and lore further fleshed out and everything further improved, have a good chance of "dethroning" any CRPG's currently considered the "best ever."

Not likely Torment is dethroned by DAO. They simply don't play in the same league.

It probably does, I guess that "out of the box" I prefer Dragon Age.

If we take mods into account, then I am not so sure.

I did mod BGII, I cannot mod DA, as I have the console version :(

I still don't get *WHY* BG2 is so high on peoples lists. I really, really don't. I played BG1 when it came out, I played BG2 a few years later when I finally beat BG1 and I have yet to beat BG2.

Yes, I've gotten pretty far, but the entire game just *bothers* me. The interface feels like I'm controlling it from inside a prison cell, the characters are more fun when referenced on message boards than when I actually play with them, most of the game I spend buffing up for a fight, beating the fight, resting for the next fight or reload if it went badly and even one of my characters died, because I can't afford a resurrection and my priest(s) all died.

I thought a fighter/mage would be the best to see the game from start to finish with, yet everywhere I just run into annoyances, making me wish I was playing something else. The dialog system is crap, most of the time I'm suddenly talking as Minsc or Imoen in conversations while the "continue" button is all the way at the bottom and the dialog choices are in the middle of the window.

Sure, it's got writing, but what is this about tactics? It's click to kill, maybe cast a spell once in a while if you're feeling like needing to rest and be butt-raped by monsters.

What am I missing here?

I agree, when you get over the nostalgia, this game is miles ahead of BG2, both in characters, story, and combat mechanics.

I only know that nostalgia will cloud my judgement, so I'm just going to try to avoid comparisons. :)

Sounds like the game just isn't for you.  That's fine, I can't stand the GTA games yet they are very popular.  BG was a revolutionary CRPG for it's time, and people like me love the detail they put in even for fluff.

Dragon Age is a great game with great graphics that has ridiculously awesome replay value and an awesome story. I'm enjoying every minute playing, no matter what type of character I've made. It's got my vote hands down.

Dragon age is the bomb, I have played all the BG series and Planescape and fallout series - they are games from another time classics of their era - As is Dragon Ages - its simply the most enjoyable game I have played in decades. May it live forever I say. DA is a classic game of today - BG series were great, but nostalgia clouds judgement.

In my opinion Baldur's Gate 2 is/was the greatest PC game ever made, followed closely by Planescape: Torment. Considering it's been a decade and nostalgia always factors in to these type of comparisons, it's hard for me to say DA is better, or not.

Doesn't really matter to me one way or another. Even if it's not better, which only time will tell, it's better than anything released since those two games, which pretty much makes it better than any game this decade.

Even being mentioned in the same breath as Baldur's Gate just shows how amazing this game is.

I think BG2 remade using DA:O technology, voice acting, etcetera would win easily. And, they might have to charge $100 for it.

Still, BG2 did not use DA:O technology. Thus, overall, DA:O is the more fun game for me -- technology matters.

Here is a prescription for -11.2 rose-tint corrective glasses.  Now run off to lenscrafters.

How insightful!

I was playing games years before Baldur's Gate, and I've been playing them since. I hardly think my fondness for one particular game in the middle of that stretch can be boiled down to rose-colored glasses.

What's your favorite PC game of all time?

If you have to ask, then you either not have played Torment or have bad tastes :bandit:

I wanted to kill Boo...

As for nostalgia clouding judgment, I went through BG2 3x. Getting bored the 2nd time through with DAO. Not really nostalgia. Best RPG for me is still Fallout1/2 though.

Only reason why I haven't played Torment is that some punk massively spoiled the plot of the game for me, ugh.

They're morons, sad to say. BG2, especially BG2+TOB is a far superior game. In fact, playing dragon age has made me want to play it again. Maybe DA2 will improve enough to think about challenging BG2's 'throne'.

I like how the author is pretentious enough to say "if have to ask why, then I despair' and yet doesn't apparently pay enough attention to realize that DA is shorter, and less of a game than BG2.

Someone also said it's not a fair comparison because they've had years to learn from BG2. Well, given that it's NOT as good of a game, I'd say it is a fair comparison. Sad, in fact, that they really haven't learned anything. Maybe they've lost a certian person or group of people who made their games better, maybe they've just lost something. They're trying to get it back with DA, but they HAVEN'T yet. DA is good, but not as good.

Lol. I don't know if there's a prescription for low IQ, but I think I can prescribe some traquillizers to keep you down and out of people's hair.

I played BG2 again less than five months ago, so I think the perspective is fresh enough. No saying DA:O ain't good, just saying it's not as good.

Ooh, low IQ.  That's a nice shot.
