There's no reason to assume he's a templar just because he talks about them. He talks about the magisters in some detail as well, and he's not one of them. It's a stretch and it's reading too much into it.

If he were a templar, for one, then the banters with Vael about finding his way to the chantry would make little sense.

I feel Camane is right. i think Fenris was looking for some sort of proof of his slavery. I also know he's been looking for his real name in some sort of form in some way shape or form like a passport or whatever. However depeninding on your interaction with Fenris over the years he seems to forget that that was why he has been looking around in Kirkwall besides looking for Denarius to free himself from his master. I think after the Expidition he gets blinded by revenge and totally forgets on looking for his own name and past.

Why would he need proof that he is a slave? He knows he was a slave and is kind of just pissed about it. He doesn't need to prove it to anyone really

Sure it would.  Imperial Templars do not serve the Chantry (not even the Imperial one).  They directly serve the Magisters.

And the magisters control the imperial chantry.

Sure they do, but it was my understanding that the Tevinter Templars were independant of the Imperial Chantry.  Both of course answer to the magisters.

I know such a shocking observation. If only we all could live inside Ian's head where maybe it all makes sense:wizard:

Take it easy guys, most if not all speculation involving Fenris's box is based on "leaps of logic."

I don't think the lyrium addiction is true simply because of the inscribed, rune-like nature of Fenris' lyrium source but it's perfectly reasonable to assume Fenris played the role of a faux-templar for Danarius in helping him take down other rival magisters. This doesn't mean he's part of the Imperial Chantry or was ever, but if his abilities depleted lyrium, the faux-templar explanation would fit snugly with the lyrium addiction hypothesis.

Anyway, like me, you may not agree with Polaris, but that doesn't mean it's ok to insult or goad him like this.

I know what Fenris thought was in the box. The universe was in the box. Fenris questioned his purpose in life and wondered where he belonged. His objectivist view of the universe had him longing for absolution and escape. Therefore because he didn't feel absolute the universe he existed in was false and no one existed. Inside the box Danarius never existed and Fenris's slavery never existed. Inside the box Fenris was whole.

No they don't, only the Grand Magister/ Black Divine
EDIT: The other magisters are on a sort of assembly that works as a government. I'll go check the codex...

My take on it is that even IF Fenris were addicted to lyrium, he wouldn't be so disappointed if it weren't there. There are other underground ways to get lyrium, and either he would have found them and been fine or he would have gotten over/gone crazy from lack of lyrium(considering how many years he was on the run from Danarius).
As far as what was in the box... I wish I knew. Where's the DLC for it, Bioware?!

I nearly died laughing when Varric and Fenris had this exchange.  Even better, there was a bug while I was in the Hanged Man and they were fighting the guardsmen while they were having this exchange.  Oh, if only I could have taken screenshots.  *sighs*
