Gonna comment on CE's I have on hand, quality more than contents
although I'll obviously note if quality is lacking, then I'm gonna give my
opinions on what I personally would like to have in an ME3 "Spectre
Edition", or w/e it's called. I personally don't consider the free
upgrades a CE so I won't include those since their additional content is pretty
negligible.
NOTE: I own a lot of
CE's/LE's/SE's/EE's/QE's/ETC's, if you don't want to read all of this I'll bold
the different games and make a list of bullet points at the end.Dead Space 2:Javi covered this one but I decided I'd just chime
in anyways, it's got good sturdy packaging and at least in my copy all parts
worked fine(I have a friend whose plasma cutter wouldn't light up, it makes a
great flashlight btw), the box was standard plastic but that's what I've come
to expect for only 20$ extra, all in all totally worth the extra money, you do
"get what you pay for" and then some in my opinion. I personally
liked the exclusive DLC in this set, because it wasn't used as an excuse to
lower quality of the package on the whole, it was a bonus, which is what
exclusive DLC should be, it gave you a weapon several hours in advance and also
a suit with armor and inventory bonuses you wouldn't see for a while.
A very good example of an entry level CE in my
opinion.
Fallout: New Vegas:Javi commented on the contents of this as well but
seeing as how I've got the entire package on hand. The box is nice, has a
weathered look and feel to it, like a briefcase in a way because of the
texture, the entire package is incredibly well themed with a comic book that
has some serious stock to it's paper, and it's cover, the story is an
interesting prequel, even if the more interesting plot points aren't touched
upon in the actual game.(if it were longer it would easily be a graphic novel)
A standard game box, but again that's pretty normal for 20$. The lucky 7 chip
is pretty sweet, has a good bit of weight to it and is an unsuspecting nod to a
very important plot element, which is nice to see retrospectively. The other
chips are very nice quality and are all themed to different in game casinos,
which is pretty cool. The playing cards are doubly themed really, first as a
Caravan deck and each card also features a prominent character or object from
the game, which is a nice touch. The soundtrack has a glossy cardboard cover
which is a bit at ends with the rest of the package but on the whole it's a
very good package in deed and worth the 20$, not better than Dead Space's imo
but hey, to each their own.
Another very good entry level CE.
Star Wars TFU 2 CE:Where there are good CE's, there are also not so
good CE's. This came with a USB drive with exclusive content(including a
digital art book, desktop themes and surprisingly the full script of the game,
which a unique touch to day the least), some in game content and the game in a
steelbook case. It's not badly themed, but it's just not a very good package. I
was personally underwhelmed and would've sold it on Ebay if I'd thought I could
fetch any sort of price after the scathing reviews of this overall atrocious
game. The one redeeming feature in my mind is the USB drive. It seems weird but
it comes from Mimobot, whose 2G USBs average at around 40$, and this was an
exclusive packed with enough extra content to make it not feel like a complete
waste of money(even if the game did).
An okay CE to a not Okay game.
Halo: Reach Legendary:Okay, this is not the start of my big ones, I'm
just going by radius from myself. This came in a huge box, themed down to the
tape used to seal the thing(didn’t have the heart to tear it so I cut it with a
knife), it was oozing atmosphere and came with a statue that likely would've
retailed at around 150$ on its own. I know, I know you can find one for 60$ now
if you shop around but I honestly don't regret the money I spent on this. It
comes with a ton of in universe content from a journal of one of the prime plot
players of the universe to bloodwork down to an iron on patch. The Blackbox
Limited that a lot of the goodies were contained in was fantastic, bearing believable
in universe content all wrapped up in a beautiful box. The game came in a
"standard" game box but with one change, black plastic. Now it
doesn't seem like much but I feel that the rest of the package, with that
unique touch wrap this up to be one of my favorite CE's I own. This was built
from the ground up with the fans in mind, it's a blueprint for what every true
Uber edition should aspire to in many many ways, despite it's lack of art book,
soundtrack or other mementos many here consider essential this rose above the
pack and was something truly unique
A legendary ending to a franchise that has shaped
consoles forever with amazing goodies for any diehard Halo fan and enough to
satiate mid level fans who may want to buy it too.
Mass Effect 2 CE:As much as I love the game, the CE wasn't too
special. Its theming was very good and cohesive, but it wasn't mind blowing.
I think a large part of it was the size, but this was very much Bioware’s second true attempt at making a CE. The artbook was small, but I feel it was good enough for what I’d paid. The comic was small compared to my other copy(couldn’t wait for launch) but the alternate cover variations of comics can fetch a good bit if they’re good art, which this one certainly was.(looking at you Evolution alternate covers) I liked the steelbook, even if it wasn’t “my” Shepard, and it had a behind the scenes, which is interesting. Only complaint is more about the handling of some of the content before launch. Since we were never told explicitly that Cerberus Network would be going to everyone until about a week or two before launch. Don’t regret buying it as it was only 10$ above retail if I remember correctly and I personally didn’t care that no one would have my armor in a single player game so them releasing that a year later on a different platform didn’t bug me.
A fair CE, nothing to extraordinary, not what I’d recommend for the standard ME3 CE due to how badly it was shown up last year through other comparable bundles later in the year, but it was an okay offering.
Dragon Age Origins CE:What I find to be ironic about the circumstances of this CE is that on some levels I like it better than ME2’s CE despite it’s shortcomings. It’s steelbox was well made with art that was very nonspecific on who the Warden was or what he looked like.(even if it did permenantly peel a line out of the plastic slipcover), the map was intriguing(if not the best of quality) and it had a making of, game soundtrack and more on a separate disc. It also helps that this was a pretty good offering for the year it came out in so far as normal CE’s went, sure there were some better but there were also some worse. Only real glaring issue is that the sticker glue was too potent(still some coated in dust despite multiple attempts to remove it)
Another okay CE, good for the time and with some ideas that shouldn’t be thrown away, but shouldn’t be considered sufficient now.
Fallout 3: Survival Edition:This in particular was a package I was very excited for, after having missed out on Oblivion’s excellent CE I didn’t want to take any chances with their next big game. I plopped down my 150$ at Amazon, waited two whole weeks despite my 1 day shipping for it to arrive and then I thought it would all be worth it when it came in. At first glance, it was pretty solid. The lunchbox was good, the bobblehead was great and those Limited Edition contents were a steal on their own for only 20$ more than the asking price. It was beautifully well themed in fact that I wish to this day that I had just bought that instead. From the making of, to the art book this packaged beautifully, it even all fits conveniently into the old school metal lunchbox. Then I looked at the other content, having had seen the wonders of what a lot of people would enjoy I dug into what had ended up selling out 7 months in advance of the games launch due to hype. I was severly disappointed, I opened the cheesy mustard cardboard box where my “Display only Pip-Boy” would be to check it out. I knew it wasn’t going to be a modern marvel or a working replica, I knew it would be just an alarm clock but I thought it would at least be decent. The stand broke as I was constructing it, the latches that held it closed at the seam were flimsy at best and the screen consisted of a light up digital display(red) and two single other lights, AM and PM. The only 3 other buttons were standard functions like time, alarm set and off. I was disappointed and when it fell from my nightstand, due to the frustratingly small buttons I had to fumble for, a chunk of it’s plastic just snapped off, and it ran on batteries. Poor show, and a serious disappointment to this day, especially considering the 70$ extra I paid for it.
A BIG NO NO, DO NOT DO THIS BIOWARE, IF YOU ARE ONLY WILLING TO PUT ONE QUALITY CE OUT ONLY DO ONE.
Assassin’s Creed 2 LE:This is a good bundle, if not a little too intrusive. The Ezio statue is not as large as the aluminum giant of a box would lead you to believe but it is still fantastically well made, the art book is around the size of the ME2 one(just gonna use that for some scale) but the main issues are in regards to the digital bonuses. The soundtrack and behind the scenes is on the second disc and cannot be removed from the disc easily as it is embedded in the .exe file. The European CE came with a third map which was sold off as an exclusive to Gamestop, which bothered me greatly. The adhesive was too strong yet again and left some ugly residue on both the box and the slipcover.
A good bundle for the extra money, since the statue is so well made but everything else was pretty much on or below par.
WoW: WotLK CE:If there’s one thing Blizzard does, it’s quality. This was the first WoW CE I’d bought and even though I quit shortly after, I still don’t regret this purchase. Upon sliding this beast out of it’s tome themed cover(It would look right at home on a bookshelf) you are greeted to a massive art book, with over 200 pages of beautiful concepts of Northrend and it’s instances this is really an amazing look into the minds of Blizzard artists. It also comes with a mousepad(Not too good a judge on these as I don’t use one myself but my friend told me it was high quality when I got it so I’ll take his word on the matter. It comes with a jewel case soundtrack featuring several exclusive tracks that weren’t released in the standard soundtrack as well as a full deck(complete with 2 cards exclusive to this set) of the World of Warcraft TCG and a Behind the Scenes DVD in an actual DVD case. They treated each and every aspect of this thing as a product of it’s own and it shows. Each could easily stand side by side with singularly purposed art books or soundtracks and not be ashamed.
A godly CE and for a steal at just 30$ above retail asking price.(Hint hint, this is what I’d like you to shoot for in terms of value in normal CE’s Bioware)
Bioshock 2 SE:The one LE aside from WoW and Reach that I feel really went above and beyond the call of duty. Came in a beautifully done box, very high quality and strudy as well. Contains the entire Bioshock 2 score ON A VINYL DISC(courtesy of “Rapture Records”), which is fanstastically mesmerising. Has 3 heavy stock themed posters, suitable for framing, never tacks though because that would be an insult to the artists who made them.(With hidden blacklight messages that are themed in universe.) An art book to easily rival that of WoW’s(while not beating it, it’s certainly on par though) it clocks in at 166 pages stuffed to the brim with concept art and is beautifully themed to look weathered. And to wrap it all up the score from Bioshock one on CD(also courtesy of Rapture Records).
A bit pricier at 90$ but still only 30$ above asking and a worthwhile investment imo.
Halo 3: ODST: LE: (Lots of colons)
This was pretty sparse so far as special content, coming only with a limited edition controller. Not a hell of a lot to say about the controller itself except that it’s an official Microsoft controller, which is one of the few quality pieces of hardware they put out for this console(I’ve gone through at least 4 headsets in my year of ownership). It’s wireless and normally retails for about 50$ so I guess it was a good deal.
Not too much I can say about it, it was a fair game with a fair LE pricewise, a unique extra that only a high profile game could get(special wireless controllers).
Hellgate: London LE:If there is ever a take that should warn you away from buying a CE, this game is that tale. It came with 2 things, DLC for the multiplayer component, and a comic. The comic was okay, but the packaging was huge and was put to waste by the enourmous box it came in(it was around a manga sized comic in a tome sized box). The only other thing that came with it was a pet. Then Flagship started the beta, everyone had complaints but we were told it was an alpha build and we were just stress testing, the final game launched, I had my copy and I couldn’t go back on it. I was pissed to say the least. Especially since it was this or Bioshock(the gameplay had scared my 14 year old self to much to venture that) and I chose this, which was more expensive and less impressive.
Horrid, horrid game, CE and support for the disgruntled fans. Use them as a cautionary tale, don’t let one name(Bill Roper in this case) pull you into a game single mindedly.
Well, that was a hell of a lot more than I expected to be writing… A note though that the only reason I could afford so much in recent years was due to large amounts of money I would get from relatives around the summer months. So, onto ME3 and what I would like to see in it personally…
In the Limited Edition:
-Art Book(preferably the likes of which were in the Bioshock/WoW CE’s but not necessarily)
-Behind the Scenes Featurette, not the ME2 one which was basically just trailers
-Soundtrack, Hopefully an actual CD, if the other content is going in there too put it in raw, no one will blame you.
-Something interesting in universe(Be it a codex program for those with SD TVs/Who may want to look at it while away from the game, or an N7 patch or even going the FO3/Halo Reach route and doing something truly uniquely themed to Mass Effect)
-The game(please, please don’t forget to put this in)
-A Deck of Cards(
Everyone’s doing it nowadays)
-Some small piece of DLC, nothing gamebreaking or any uber weapons but something that will start us off running instead of walking.
-Unique box/Disc(s)(No Vandershep this time, fine on a normal retail box if that’s what we get, but if there’s a steelbook I think most anyone willing to dish out 20-30$ extra shouldn’t need to look at him. If you need some inspiration check out the DAO CE art)
-Normal Project 10$ DLC
In the Uber Edition:
-All Limited Edition Content
-Something completely awesome, uniquely Mass Effect and without Vandershep(no hate, but a lot of people identify with their character(s) a lot and pasting Vandershep on something they’re forking 150$ for would just annoy people) Things I’d suggest include:
-N7 Helmet(Wearable or cat sized, either is fine, just don’t lazily store the game in a tiny slot on the bottom)
-M8 Avenger, preferably full size/foldable, if you guys can’t do the folding normal would be fine.(Wasn’t going to like it before but if all classes have all weapons then this should be instantly recognizable)
-Scale Normandy Model(Ideally 8-12” long)(Credit to Evil Chris for this idea)
-Reaper model with light up eyes(Not scale)
-Geth lamp(just a joke, I honestly don’t think I’d have a place to put this, and it would be hard to display this publically without ridicule)
