1 - An 10 inch replica/statue of a Mass Relay (made out of solid die-cast metal),
2 - Commander Shepard's Alliance 'Long Service Medal' in a display case,
3 - And, lastly, a quality Steel Case for the game with lots of intricate and elaborate artwork, outside and inside.

Add to this the usual in-game item codes and free DLC etc.

No flimsy art book (you'll look at it once or twice and then never again - let's be honest) or making-of DVD (ditto).

That's my two cents anyway

First of all, I don't want it handled like the SE for Dragon Age 2. Make a simple distinction between regular and CE, so I'm not disappointed when I don't receive the CE as promised.

Second, make sure it's available worldwide.

And fill it up with some booklet/DVD about the entire trilogy, this is the last game after all. Some nice ingame items is always a must. And a statue of the Normandy SR1 to put on my desk would top it off. :)

I don't really want books or soundtracks. I think those should probably be offered online for order for the people who want them.

However, I think that feelies, the kind that existed during the days of Infocom, should be included in CEs. Books? Soundtracks? Cloth maps? Those are nice and all, but I'd prefer something that feels like it's a part of the universe. If I play, say, Zork and got a book of Zork lore, that's cool, yeah. But getting an actual Zorkmid to hold in your hand? That's awesome.

Fun fact: feelies used to be included in the standard editions of games. There were no special collector editions! There were feelies for everyone! Feelies for the working man!

Now we're lucky if we get color manuals. :P

I was inspired to write this after watching the  CDP Days 2011 Spring Conference . Watching that led me to looking The Witcher 2 on gog.com, and clicking on the Preorder button brought up a free download of extras, notably a 'visual tour' of CDProjekt's studio. This is really something that I'd love to see BioWare do. I think it'd be great to include videos taken during the creation of Mass Effect 3. I would like to think that Collectors Editions are for die-hard fans.

Oh yes indeed. I have been hoping for an extensive "Behind the Scenes" from Bioware a long while and I really hope they come around and include one this time.

i agree with the OP 100%. I think a great X-factor would be a metal/steel Normandy replica with pretty nice detail thats at least 30cm long. it would come on a nice small stand to display it. that along with all the other 'basic' LE items would be a solid bundle for a little over $100.

Gears of war 3 has an epic edition wort $150. they haven' announced whats in it yet but hopefully it lives up to its name.

I approve of this idea 100% Heck, I even have some money saved up for this collector's edition! :P An actual soundtrack CD and artbook (more along the lines of the ME1 artbook rather than the ME2 but I suppose that might not be possible) definately sounds great; I'm always a sucker for those. A commentary mode or making-of video is a nice addition as well; I really enjoyed the HL2/Portal commentaries and it would be great to see something of the sort come from ME3.

Heres my two cents, I DONT WANT QUANTITY OVER QUALITY. Sorry for the caps but i believe that is mega important. For me if i got shepards damaged helmet for me2 CE i would of been ecstatic, rather than have 100 times ill never look at again(not that u did). So that is key, a few items of good quality that you want to look at and not shove in a closet so they dont attack u

This game is a pretty big deal and deserves a spectacular CE.

I'm willing to pay whatever it costs provided we get a good one.

*OST (not digital) - I strongly agree with this. The music in the ME games is amazing. I'd love an official soundtrack that I can display on my shelf.
*Shep's Dogtags - Something that is special to every player of Mass Effect. They aren't tied to gender so it would please people like me who don't want to pay a lot of money just to have to look at Sheploo (since I only play female Sheps) and if they are presented exactly as in LOTSB.....I think I would send a large box of chocolates to the BioWare offices.

I'm not too bothered about ingame content. The content for DA2 was alright but it wasn't actually needed. Sure it saved us a bit of money not having to purchase Sebastian but otherwise the weapons and such that we got aren't very important. Some of them were nice to equip at the start of the game but as it progressed I found better base game items that I started using. Any physical items in the ME3 CE I can display around my room. I'd much prefer that. I love both DA and ME so any items to do with those games get pride of place. If there's any ingame content like extra weapons and such then i'd prefer it if they were a preorder incentive (not store specific though) or inside every brand new copy of the game rather than something specific to the CE.

If there's going to be different editions then it needs to be that the more expensive editions contain everything from the cheaper ones so as the price gets higher you're getting more rather than simply a different selection of things.

Striking materialistic fetishism here.  The discussion about packing materials in particular reminds me of the business card scene from the American Psycho movie.

That said, as long as it doesn't divert even a dime from development of content I say geth lamps and plastic helmets for all!

What is most important to me is that the mandatory steel-case is well designed. Looking at the ME2 collector's edition (that I didn't get, since I own a PS3 and not a 360) the design of the outer packaging (close-up of the N7 armor) is perfect whereas the design of the steel-case is horrible. A steel-case with a front looking similar to this would be perfect: http://farm5.static...._512ae1f35c.jpg
The steel-case should of course be the same size as regular game cases, so it fits nicely next to all the other games, but I guess that's obvious.

Having seen Shepard's old helmet on the desk in ME2 suprisingly made me want one, so if any kind of model should be included, that's what I want. Other than that, a book would be really nice. Preferably a codex, but some story or short stories wouldn't be that bad either. The idea of Shepard's dog tag also sounded appealing.

I don't really care for soundtrack or artwork, but something I really don't want to see in the collector's edition is some cheap-looking model or figurine. It would be very annoying having to pay extra (since that's most likely what will bring up the price) for something that will most likely get thrown away immediately.

Shepard's Long Service Metal is an excellent idea. Anything that belongs to Shepard would be awesome. I loved the Lucky 38 chip from the New Vegas collector's edition, given how it was such a huge plot device in the game. ME3 CE needs something like that.

I want to see something as big as the Halo:Reach legendary edition. This is the final game of this epic trilogy so you should get some epic items in the collectors edition. I would love to see a N7 helmet, a Normandy ship model or a Assualt Rifle replica. I don't just want some silly 20 page comic like the last game. I would pay good money for the items listed above.

I have to agree that a true collectors edition is required. Most collectors editions now are just the same game with a couple of thrown in additions, what we really need is something like The Witcher 2 is having, which is a hell of alot of extra out of game content for us to oogle at.

In game add-ons like special Armor and Weapons is EH! I don't consider that a real "Collector" quality. Things mentioned that really would be nice (at least for me) is

N7 Replica Helmet (wearable)
Model of the Normandy
A large sized Art Book
A Hard copy of the Soundtrack
A Behind the scenes of ME3 (ME2's was weak sause Incarnate)
A Replica of the Avenger Assault Rifle
Shepards Dog Tags

All those things scream "Hardcore" Collector

i havent read any of the other replies. have left a few in another collector's edition topic.
i only have a few special editions for games...Macross Ultimate Frontier, Dragon Age:Origins, and Mass Effect 2. I wanted special edition versions of Red Dead Redemption, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Dragon Age 2...but could only get Signature Editions by pre-ordering them.
the reason i got the special editions is because i know im getting a quality game. the stuff inside is only icing on the cake. BUT if im shelling out serious green for that icing...i would like something that WILL separate it from other games....both in game (especially if i let others know i got it when they check my profile on xboxlive) and stuff i can place on a mantel in my bed room.
that said....
-digital versions of the novels and comics.
-a book of the complied ME Universe lore and codex
-exclusive character customization features
-bonus armor and a weapon or two (maybe some "retro" pieces from ME1)
-a pewter figurine of the SR-1 Normandy and male AND female Sheps
-the entire ost...which can be played in game like in ME2.
-a remix of some of the ost which can be played in the various clubs of ME
-a galaxy map poster
-dvd of ALL interviews, promos, and character vids

Add a Normandy model ship to that and you got the ideal package (but never gonna happen).

Now to something constructive:
In terms of box art, I actually thought the ME2 SE was well done, the "dirty" N7 look was great and the steal boxes withing also had good art on them. For ME3, we need some sleek and clean N7 look again and it cannot be overfilled with images, minimalism is the way to go here IMO.

Edit: Oh yeah, almost forgot, kudos to the OP, nice post! Captures what I want of an SE/CE pretty well.
