Varric. Why won't you let me rival you?

Anyone mention to completely max out Varric's rivalry bar? How do I do so?

I'm trying to rival Varric but I *can't!* everytime I get him decently on the rivalry scale something else (*looks at Varric's personal quest in pure hatred*) will knock it back to neutral. Darn 15 friendship points. >_>

Act 2 quest: If you don't bring Anders with you, tell him to spare Bartrand. If you do bring Anders with you (and you have Anders heal Bartrand), tell him to kill Bartrand. If those don't get you a rivalry increase, there's a bug.
Act 3: This should always push him further in the direction you were already going. (Friendship, if friendly, rivalry if rivals.)

Well I did get the 15 rivalry points...but they seem to have been canceled out by the 15 friendship points I got after leaving the estate. (I had Anders heal Bertrand before letting Varric kill him).
Is that supposed to happen? I picked both the aggressive and direct options.
I'll check Act 3 as well.

That's a bug. You shouldn't get any approval changes in the conversation after you leave Bartrand's mansion.

Well Act 3 works fine. But yeah no matter what I choose I get 15 friendship after leaving Betrand's mansion.

If you spare Bartrand, and don't have Anders heal him, are you still getting friendship?

Nope. I don't get any friendship points.

I wanted to chime in and say I, too, got +15 friendship points from Varric from the conversation outside the mansion.
For the record, this was my Aggressive Hawke who already had Varric at around half-rivalry. Went to the mansion. Did have Anders in party, but didn't let him do anything with Bartrand. Hawke pretty much just ran with the "your brother is crazy, you need to kill him" sort of options. Varric killed him. I netted +15 friendship (which I thought was a bit strange, but... eh).
Had the talk with Varric outside the mansion afterwards. Chose all red/aggressive/lay down the law options. Ended up with another +15 friendship points and now Varric's right back in the middle of neutral territory.

This part is working as intended. Varric's Act 2 quest hinges on whether or not he gets closure with his brother. If Anders isn't there, or doesn't heal Bartrand, then Varric goes in wanting to kill his brother, hesitates over doing the deed, and will get friendship from the player encouraging him to do what he wanted to do in the first place. If Anders heals Bartrand, Varric no longer wants him dead. He again gets friendship points for being backed up on the decision he wants to make, and gets rivalry for being pushed to do what he doesn't want to do, but suspects might be the smarter choice.

Thanks for clarifying, Mary. I like how what Varric wants to do with Bartrand changes based on the circumstances. This Aggressive Hawke playthrough, Bethany died in the Deep Roads and Varric definitely is upset about that and pins it on Bartrand. My first playthrough, no such thing happened, Anders healed Bartrand, and Lady Hawke helped Varric pick out a nice sanitarium by the Waking Sea.

I did get him to max rivalry with an aggressive Hawke. Varric seems to disapprove of not so smooth approaches to quests (like threatening people, being rude etc)
I'll try this. Probably will roll a rogue so it'll be easier.
