Parry sustained mode states it reserves 20% of your stamina.

I'm playing a rogue archer on nightmare solo using IN1's excellent guide as a basis for my character (it can be found in the pinned topic at the top of the forum)

What I'm running into is when I activate parry (deulist spec), and then turn it off I don't regain the 20% stamina I had reserved for the sustained mode.  I seem to recall that whenever I turned off a sustained mode on my warrior I got the "reserved" stamina back since I never actually used it for anything because it was "reserved"  Did they change the way sustained modes work with patch 1.02, or was I just seeing things when it came to sustained modes giving me back stamina prior to the patch?

Thanks in advance!

Edit:  I just tested with the "speed" sustained mode and it seems to be doing the same thing.  Sustained modes no loner give back reserved mana/stamina?

They never did not unless you're out of combat. What's the point in having them otherwise?

Sustained abilities consume the stamina/mana when activated. It is suggested you use that mana before activating any sustained ability, especially if only for limited use.

okay, that must have been my problem, I was seeing the difference in and out of combat. thanks for the replies :)

but this brings up something interesting. Why does combat matter when/if a sustained mode is activated?  If I'm in combat and activate a sustained mode I basically set aside that mana/stamina to keep that mode active, if I take it off I should regain the mana/stamina regardless of combat.

A reserve isn't used, so why treat it as such even while engaged in combat?

This adds another layer of complexity to resources management; you have to prioritize and decide if sacrificing a certain amount of your mana/stamina pool is worth the bonus. This was even more complex in Origins where sustainables made the cost of active abilities more expensive to use.

This penalty is just another way of making the game more complex and adding strategic depth while allowing wide variety of abilities in a balanced way- so you can't just stack every one of those talents or you'd be left without available mana.

having sustains activate at certain stamina/mana percentages helps conserve total mana/stamina throughout combat while disabling out of combat prepares you to do so.

from my standard tactics:

well use Avaline activating Shield Defence as an example

1
2
3. enemy: attacking Avaline: use as condition for next tactic
4. self: health <75%: activate: Shield Defence
5.
6.
7. self: at least one enemy alive: skip tactics
8. self: any: deactivate: Shield Defence

this allows her to turn it on when needed only, part way in to combat after other abilities have used stamina hopefully. Then turn it off automatically at the end of combat, so you dont have to do it manually.

skip tactics set should be put at the very end of your tactics btw
