Excuse me?

Can someone help me and give me some advice with the big dragon fight on deep roads expedition??

I'm having an absolutely terrible time with it! :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
This STUPID THING is way too tough for my party!::(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
They are all ending up dying becuase of this DAMNED STUPID THING!! :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

It also desnt help matters when these DAMNED STPID little wormlings come along afterwawrds either!!:(:(
What a HELLL of DAMNNED STUPID PIECE OF CRAPP!!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Can anyone give me any handy tips please???

My main character is a rogue, plus, I have Varric, Aveline and Anders.

Please excuse me, but this is just SOOOO DAMNED ANNOYING right now, and I just cannot find a DMANED way around this STUPID FIGHT without all of us dying to DEATH!!

I even have my game set to "Casual" in the game settings, (suposed to be the easiest game setting for easier gameplay) but it still didn't stop my party from ending up completely dead!!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Did anyone else out there have  a big problem with this fight too?
Or is it just me??:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

I only have 4 health potions left, and I have Anders using all that power for killing the dragon ( he has a heal skill/spell) because he doesn't have anough power to keep healing companions at the rate of what teh coodlwon of the skills/spells are!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Also, I guess my party doesnt really have the best  armour either!
I think this game was a ratehr poorn setup overall, particualarly to do with armourr.

I can't work it out, but I could never be able to rauise the points/stats my party needed to get the best armour, and so my inventory is just sitting with a whole heap of armour and weaponms taht my party cannot use becasue of this!!

What a complete letdown!!!!!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Also, everytime one of my party got a lvl up, it woudl have been much better if I was able to choose more than 1 skill each time, like 3 for e.g. like you do with stats! The current option juist wasn't verty helpful to me at all!!
NOT ONE BIT!!!!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

A couple of tips:

The dragon as well as the dragonlings are very weak against cold damage. If possible, use weapons and spells that deal cold damage.

Do not go into the main room. Stay in the hallway just before the main room and make the monsters come to you. The doorway will act as a gateway and keep all the monsters close together so your AoE (area of effect) spells can affect them all.

Have Aveline stay on the Mature dragon and the others take care of the dragonlings. Try to have your rogue stay behind the dragon and away from it's attention.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply, but it didn't really help much. :(

First of all, I did do like you suggested : "don't go out into the main area and keep to the hallway"
( well actually I did go out into the main area but it was only about half way through the fight when I was looking for space and wanted the dragon to keep follwoing me as I had control of aveline as the tank/warror) But then afterwards, it went completely downhill from there!! Everyone was getting smashed to pieces!!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Secondly, Aveline was the 1 who got killed first, and I don't really have anuything which is loaded with any cold damage either!:(:(

My party managed to get the big dragon's health down to..... GOD KNOWS WHERE???!!
Well it lost a lot fo health anyway, but after that, everyone was just getting smasjed as I said!:(:(:(

Thirdly : How on earth do you know that dragons are weak to cold damage?
What kind of information tells you this exactly??
I wish I'd had a better understanding of this before I played!!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

None of my party have any weapons which deal any cold damage and I loaded Anders with mostly Fire and lightning skills/spells. That's gotta be some bacd luck indeeed!!!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

I'm guessing this is really upsetting you. Just a hunch.

Anyway, all joking aside, is this the High Dragon in Act 3 you're having trouble with?

Put Fire resist runes in all your companion armors.
Don't let yourself stand in front of the breath.

/profit

(You may have to reload an earlier save and go back to town for the correct gear)

yes this. Fire Warding Runes help immensely. I don't know if the values stack, but they will help. Also stock up on potions of all sorts (at least 20-25 on Casual), utilize various area of effect type attacks (Hail of Arrows, Cone of Cold especially, Firestorm, Tempest, etc..), equip anything that does cold damage, and for an added bonus use the ability Elemental Weapons. The damage added isn't much I think, but every little bit helps.

I'm not really sure about whqat acts or anything, but I think it is.... yes.

Here is a link on youtube from someone who made a clip of the demonstration.
The person in this clip looked like they had wayyyy better armor and weapons than me and my party do, and yet he still died from this dragon's attacks too!

Anyway, here's the clip.

oh THAT dragon. Yea he's kinda tricky at first. Backtrack to Bodahn and see if he has any runes of fire warding for sale. If not, try everything else I mentioned above your post.

Keep Varric far back firing crossbow bolts, and if you've unlocked both the Speed and Bianca's Song sustained abilities, use them because they increase attack speed. When you see more Dragonlings appearing, try to use Aveline to Taunt them into a cluster and have Varric use Hail of Arrows.

If Anders knows Cone of Cold, use that on as many dragonlings as possible, and if possible the Dragon itself.

Hawke's Miasmic Flask can stun the dragonlings, while backstab can be used as a quick dodging tactic. Evade is also helpful.

Okay, first thing to do if it annoys you is to turn down the difficulty setting. You can set it to easy and I think the number of inbetween spawns is severely limited. Secondly knowing your group composition would help a bunch.

Basic hints have mostly already been stated:
- Throw a fire resistance rune onto everybody. Depending on difficulty you will need more runes but I've found that 1 or 2 have been sufficient.
- Funnel dragonlings into the "pass"
- Avoid flame breath

On the subject of the dragon's damage the basic priority attack list is:
If no target in melee range, spit fireball
If target in melee range, check location and threat table
     If primary threat target, attack
If target directly behind (i.e tail cone), perform back leg kick

Once the primary threat target is in melee range, it will either bite, do a claw swipe (which will usually send you flying backwards), flare its wings (another knockback), or rear its neck back for 2/3 seconds and perform a fire breath. If you see the neck rear back, pause and get your tank the hell away from the head. For this reason, none of your dps should be in front aswell. If you have melee dps, position them towards the sides of the dragon - it avoids its back leg kick. Range dps should be at maximum range away from the head. Occasionally it will fly up and either a) land in a new location or B) land on its "perch." Option A is just a repositioning move - get your tank after it and keep hitting.

Option B - add phase - there's 2 to 3 of them, depending on how fast you kill it. Seemingly triggered by % marks in its hitpoints - avoiding a ledge phase is possible by taking out a massive portion of its hitpoints in a quick burst. In any event, add phases will spawn a bunch of dragonlings. Focus fire is better for autoattack hits and spread fire for abilities - by that I mean, if you're using an ability, use it on a separate target(s), not the focus fire target. Occasionally you'll get a full blown dragon add - crowd control it if you can (petrify, horror, miasmic flask, granades, etc) and burn it down asap. The ledge phase is on a TIMER - the dragon can land again while there's still adds up, ergo the rationale behind burning them down fast. While the dragon is up there, be sure not to cluster your group together due to fireball splash damage. Spread party members several meters apart. If all adds are down and the dragon is still sitting on its ledge, run around in a giant circle. Upon landing, return to phase 1.

Few tricks:
- Conserve potions - they restore hitpoint percentages and not flat rates, so using a potion at 60% health is overkill in most cases. 20 to 30% should be fine unless you're feeling unlucky.
- AoE abilities are mostly worthless, except maybe firestorm and that one only gets mentioned because it can do a frankly irresponsible amount of damage at the lower difficulty levels. In add phases, the dragonlings die too quickly for aoe to do much
- If you have a healer, bring them. If you can respec via Maker's Sigh, bringing along a buff mage is advisable - Heroic Aura, Elemental Weapons, Haste, Mage Bubbles, those are all super useful.
- During the ground phases of the dragon, don't be afraid to back off and wait for a potion cooldown if you get low on health. Just make sure that your primary target is in melee range and run in circles around the dragon - take care not to get caught in the fire breath if it uses that
- If you can afford them, +damage potions and deathroot toxin are nice on your RANGED dps
- If you're bringing a melee dps, be sure to micromanage them - the AI will always move to the ass end of the dragon in this encounter which is extremely idiotic - the bloody thing will just leg kick them away

Good luck mate

This was a pretty fun fight in my opinion. Played it on Hard the first time thru, died a few times figuring it out, which I love about RPG's

What worked best for me was I ended up working on who controlled agro, in my case it ended up being varric. I then kited it around using the stairs in the big room. I had Anders with Cone of Cold and Aveline take care of all the dragonlings when they spawned meanwhile varric ran around while Hawke beat on the dragon from behind. Yeah, fire resists, and stay away from the fiery breath because it's...... well, fiery

Same here, Hard difficulty and EVERYBODY died - except Merrill. It was the most hilarious 15% hitpoints I've seen, dancing around this huge bloody dragon, bonking it in the feet with my staff for the next 10 minutes

I used Aveline to (forgotten what the moves called) but where she destracts enemies onto her and I used my rogue to take out the dragonlings and Varric and anders to help take some damage down on the high dragon, and that was pretty much it- also the spell haste works wonders with a rogue and mage

As Stevebo mentioned, the stairs are a good tactic to employ. At one point, I got Varric up onto the ledge that overlooks the room, had him hold position, and continued to load him up with stamina potions so that he could do Hail of Arrows. I kept Anders just inside the by the doorway, and every so often had him run forward for some close-range. I had Isabela with me though, not Aveline, so I did a lot of back-stabbing.

Also, take control of your healer. That's Anders, right? Have him concentrate on the big dragon. THEN RUN. It's called Kiting. When the dragon is after you, just keep moving him around. Only stop to heal or cast Haste if you have it. Switch to characters with low health only to get them to use potions if their health is really low. The dragonlings shouldn't be that tough, just the big dragon is the hard one. Try to take it on in the open area. You don't want to go into the corridor. Put Varric up on the stairs and have him stay there, but most of all, keep your Healer alive and moving. Good luck!

Slight point to use to your advantage on top of what everyone else has said. Make sure you bring one or two ranged party members with you ie. Varric and a Mage. When the dragon jumps up to the cliff just have your melee members hug the cliff and heal your ranged guys while having your ranged guys pick away at the dragon on the cliff. um, before that smash the dragonlings asap tho. It's a little time consuming and a bit cheap but I spent 8 frustrating hours playing on casual because I had some Anders glitch and therefore had absolutely no healer and this was what worked for me.

Also if you absolutely can't beat it you can just backtrack way back until you get to a smaller doorway that the big dragon can't fit through and just sit over there hitting him with a ranged character.

p.s. your posts don't have enough smilies

I think this would probabaly be the best option for me personally.
But one small problem though.

How do I get my other companions to follow on?
When the big dragon is there, won't they just stand there in front of it getting smashed to pieces?

How do I get my party to follow me when I'm in combat mode?

Except you don't have that shield in act 1 - the OP is talking about the deep roads dragon, not the high dragon.

They will not follow you around in combat, barring the initial "Everybody charge!" movement when the baddie appears. Melee party members that are not designated tank in their Tactics will automatically gravitate towards the tail of the dragon. Range will just run into range and open fire. If you want to move party members around, pause the game, select them and point them towards where you want them to move. I don't think there's a toggle follow option. Also, I thought you were referring to the High Dragon. Blarg, if I'd known that then I'd have shortened that earlier wall of text. Oh well, most of it still applies anyways.

By the way, even if you die, ranged dps can kite the dragon to death - just keep running circles up and down the platform at the opposite end of the entry passageway. Stop momentarily, snipe, and take off again. Just be sure to deadify any dragonlings first - they get in your way otherwise

Well after all that, I managed to kill this horrible dragon in the end!
I decided to take "Ox_Mox's" advice and backtrack to the room with the small door which the dragon couldn't fit through.

It took over half an hour to get it down though. (quite long)
I had to keep going up to the door with 1 of my characters, alternating which ones to use and throw the most damaging skills/spells at the dragon til it died. It was quite a long way around the situation as you can imagine, but it seemd to be the best way around it for me. It made it easier to avoid the fire breath every so often, and though there were still a few injuries here and there, it wasn't as damaging as it would be if I took the shorter way around and gone right in there.... getting ourselves killed!

I really think though, what made this fight much harder for me to begin with, was the added wormlings.
If my team had managed to kill the dragon in the first place, they would have lost so much health that they wouldn't have had enough to kill the wormlings afterwards.

So taking the long way around, as I said..... seemd to be the best way for me.

P.S. I have a seen a clip on youtube of what the end fight witht the last boss is like.
It seems quite a long fight too. But HEAVEN FORBID...... I know there is NO WAY I will EVER..... be able to make that!! I'll be sh****** myself over that if I had go through with it.:(:(

I'll probaably just follow the story up until then, and when it gets there, I'll quit!
It looks waaaayyyy too tough indeed!![smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/sad.png[/smilie]

If you're talking about the last boss, as in the Act III boss, you might be alright by that time. You'll be a higher level, with better equipment and armor, etc. A whole different playing field really. If you mean the last boss of Act I, there in the thaig, that's a very long and frustrating fight that involves a lot of timing. Moving your party members individually, placing them behind pillars, etc. But you'll get through it.
If push comes to shove, you could always try using the console, or changing the difficulty level in your Options menu just for the bigger battles.
Best to you.
