Hate Virmire?

But the CHOICES that matter! It totally changed that cameo you got in ME2!

Awesome post. :P

edit: PS: I usually saved Kaidan, when I wasn't trying to romance Ashley.
--Biotic/tech (Sentinel) with cool powers, vs. Pure Soldier (can wear heavier armor and use all guns but that's about it)?  Pfffft, no contest. =]

This.

I've always saved Kaidan except Ashley once, and  just to have a different choice imported into ME3. Ashley's xenophobia really gets on my nerves. :?

I 'always' save Kaidan except one lvl60 character with Ashley. Kaidan has more useful talents, is a fearless fighter, and doesn't scream every 3 seconds during combat. Going back to save him @ the bomb is THE most emotional event in ME1; also the combat @ the bomb is much more realistic.
SPOILER ! ME2, Ashley gets TWO 'Metals of Honor' (Congressional Metal of Honor, BLue Max etc) whereas Kaidan only gets a Scholarship for her/his sacrifice.

While saving Kaidan is the logical choice I always preferred Ashley. Hey story just has too much potential to be cut off so soon. Her grandfather was a general who surrendered to Turians rather than sacrifice innocents, her father spent his entire life trying to redeem the shame but never rose beyond today's equivalent of a Private, despite years of service. She and Shepard both had the same Drill Instructor, so it's possible her command style and Shepard's are similar, despite her not being an officer. Finally, Ashley was the sole survivor of Eden Prime and probably has survivor's guilt, similar to the default Shepard.

Kaidan might be the most logical choice, but for pure story "oomph" I prefer Ashley and hope that working for the Council will belay some of her xenophobic tendencies.

Read the Spoiler! above
Ashley's death also redeems her family honor.

We find out that General Williams is not the hero (or coward) we were lead to believe from Ashley's stories in ME: Evolution. Her reaction/plot points in ME3 would make a + for saving her.

Of course the fact that she's as hot as a thousand suns might have had something to do with it...

Kaidan.

He's an officer and a biotic.

Ashley isn't an officer and not a biotic. Any person can be made into a soldier. A person has to be born a biotic.

This makes Kaidan more valuable.

The Virmire decision is one the hardest moments in gaming.  Bioware did a great job at making me love both Ash and Kaidan.   Making that choice is really difficult even now.

Both have lovable attributes so making the choice is something I have to think long and hard about.

I can half agree; it was a great bit of writing.  But I will always have a bit of hate tucked away in my heart that I won't get more Ashley and Kaidan banter in ME3.

Yeah, I loved having the two of them together, their banter was the best part of ME1 for me.

I will fully admit to being bitter and resentful that you can have a "perfect" suicide mission, but someone ALWAYS dies on Virmire.  It's far more emotionally powerful, but if I had any choice at all, Ashley and Kaidan would both survive in all of my games.

This is why Kaidan made the cut in my canon. Though I do have 2nd where Ash is the VS and LI instead of Miranda.

I chose Kaidan.
Because I prefer his personality. He's also an officer and a biotic : so to me he's more valuable.
I have nothing against Ash.

Can't wait to go on mission with my favorites sentinels.

Ashley is a better choice in my opinion.
  • She is younger
  • She has a family, which she cares about.
  • She is not shy like Kaidan.
  • She is more interesting than Kaidan.
  • She is romanceable by Male Shepard.
  • Nobody mistakes her name (unlike Kaiden, Kieden etc).

I agree with people saying there is no best option, it really depends on who you prefer to have stick around. There's not much combat benefit because this isn't the game's focus and never was, it's the story so pick whichever fits with your Shepard the best. Those of us who romance either one have a clear choice.

I alwys pick my Kai Kai, but Ashley was my Shep's best friend by the time Virmire comes around and she'll never get over that choice. Damn you Saren! Damn you reapers! Damn you BIOWARE!

XD

It's an easy decision for me because of personal taste, but objectively I don't think it's possible to say what the 'best' choice is. One isn't better than the other.

However, I think Kaidan's biotics are a negligible advantage given the side-effects of his L2 implant. Who knows how long he'll be able to work in the field without triggering some of those nastier symptoms. Besides, biotics may be rare, but Shepard apparently has a knack for attracting them. They're a dime a dozen in ME2.
