I only have the Deep Roads task to do in Act 1 and I dont have enough coin to start it.

I've sold all my extra items/armor/whatever and only have 47 sovereigns, and I"ve pretty much opened every crate, chest and searched every sack

he doesn't actually give it to you. when you go talk to Bartrand, there's the option of saying something like "the money's on its way".

That option never came up.

well, I don't remember what the option actually was. It should be the top option. the bottom option is something like "I'll be back when I have the money". I'm just paraphrasing since I don't remember the actual dialogue options.

Did you have Varric in the party when you went to talk to Bartrand? He has to be in the party.

As for extra cash, in my first playthrough, I completely missed the rewards for cleaning out the street gangs, because I didn't realize that the "friend" you are supposed to get the reward from only appears in the Hanged Man (one of the upstairs back rooms) at night. Have you collected those rewards? They amount to quite a few souvreigns.

In the small "Deliver Lost Goods" quests you gather along the way, you may Pause the screen and have each member of the party speak to the interested person for an equal share. While this is an exploit, tis a very small one that simply rewards the remaining party also.

Try to find some small items what you can deliver, they are all over the places. They are sometimes hard to see, put they are there.

Example, in darktown, near where was the Mage, next to pilar is one of them.

Search all the chests/barrels/crates/bodies/skeletons - There is the occasional delivery item that you can turn in for XP and gold. Also, creepy as it may be, all those torn pants do add up after a while...Hawke apparently has this creepy fetish for discarded clothing. Also, upgrading all your possible companions is usually unnecessary. Unless you regularly switch around your party, feel free to let those companions you rarely "use" live with your hand-me-downs, assuming you bother upgrading them at all. And since there's the possibility of them turning on you in the final battle, upgrading their junk is even less appealing, especially on harder difficulties.

Have you cleaned up all the streets at night + collected your reward? there's quite a few gold there.
I'm assuming you don't have any quests/encounters left so you won't be able to farm potions and injury kits.. I don't know. On a typical act 1 run I probably get 100+g, so there definitely should be enough if you've done all the secondary and side-quests..
Unless you spent it all in the blooming rose ;)

I think you can rip off Dougal in act 1 for 50 gold.

From the beginning of act one put every heal/sta/lirium/injury potion in your chest. The game seems to cap you at around 8 to 10 for each (if you have that many, you will never get another dropped). Just have a few elfroot pots for emergencies. By the end of act one you should have nearly 40 to 50 of each (maybe more if lucky), sell the excess, rinse repeat in act 2 and 3 (good coin on the side).
