In order to deal out as much DPS as Warriors and Rogues, it is necessary for a Mage to exploit enemy Elemental Immunities and Weaknesses (provided that you're not a Walking Bomb genius).

The problem is, an early game Mage (Act I, specifically) don't have enough points to go into BOTH the Elemental and Primal trees, while enemies from different missions are weak to one of the two trees.

Fortunately, with Black Emporium comes the Maker's Sigh, which allows you to switch back and forth between Elemental and Primal depending on the mission. You don't want to switch too often, however, as Maker's Sigh is not very cheap.

Thus, I have the idea of doing the missions in Act I as a Mage *in a specific order* so that by a *minimum* number of respecs, you can exploit enemy elemental weaknesses to the maximum. The order I've come up with is by no means the optimal order, but merely an attempt to let other Mage players:

(1) Exploit enemy elemental weaknesses fully so that they dominate like a Mage should by lore;
(2) Enjoy BOTH Elemental and Primal spells during Act I and use both to their fullest power.

In the following Mission Ordering, I will list a mission's name, its location, the dominant type of enemies in the mission, and its elemental weakness. Respecs are noted between Missions when necessary. Some particularly easy missions (Loose Ends) are omitted since you can do them with any spec.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
>>>Beginning of Game: Put points in Primal (Chain Lightning first). Use Staff of Parthalan.

1. Prologue (Lothering). Darkspawn. Spirit.
2. Prologue (Gallows). Raiders. Electricity.

>>Enter Year 1. Keep putting points into Primal (Chain Reaction/Tempest).

3. Merrill Recruitment (Sundermount). Undead/Spiders. Electricity.
4. Aveline Personal Quest (Sundermount Ambush Site). Raiders. Electricity.
5. Wayward Son First Part (Lowtown and Docks). Raiders/Shades. Electricity.

>>Respec into Elemental- Fire (Fireball, Pyromancer, Firestorm).

6. Wayward Son Second Part (Darktown and Wounded Coast). Slavers. Fire.
7. Birthright (Darktown). Slavers. Fire.
8. Fenris Recruitment (Lowtown Night). Slavers. Fire.
9. Unbidden Rescue (Wounded Coast). Winters Mercenaries. Fire.
10. Guardsman Pretender Barracks (Hightown Night). Guardsman Pretenders. Fire.

>> Respec into Elemental- Ice (Get Winter's Grasp/Cone of Cold. Put the rest of the point into Electricity Spells). Switch staff to Apostate's Courage.

10. Anders Recruitment (Chantry, Night). Templars. Cold.
11. Blackpowder Promise (Wounded Coast). Qunari. Cold.
12. The Bone Pit (The Bone Pit). Dragons. Cold.
13. Act of Mercy (If you plan to kill the Templars). Templars. Cold.

>> Respec into Primal (Chain Reaction/Strikes Twice. Keep some Cold Spells if you want).

13. Act of Mercy (If you plan to outsmart the Templars). Undead. Electricity.

>> In Act of Mercy you get the Hyptonist's Staff from the body of Decimus, a very good Electricity Staff that will help you in the next few missions.

14. Isabela Recruitment (Hightown Night/Chantry). Raiders. Electricity.
15. Magistrate's Orders (Mountain Cave). Spiders/Undead. Electricity.
16. The First Sacrifice (Lowtown). Shades. Electricity.
17. Sheparding Wolves First Part (Undercity Warrens). Spiders. Eletricity.

>> Respec into Elemental- Cold. (put some points into Spirit/Fire, Keep Chain Lightning if you want)

18. Sheparding Wolves Second Part (Wounded Coast). Qunari. Cold
19. Deep Roads. Darkspawn/Shade/Profane/Dragon. Spirit/Electricity/Spirit & Cold/Cold.

You'll probably only need the first 1 or 2 respecs as you get many more points during later parts of the game. You can also come up with your own ordering. This is just a general idea.

Seems like a whole lot of effort.. probably only worth it for a solo run given that you can get by simply switching staffs and using companions. I think that chain lightning (especially if you set up CCCs) can adequately cover the slaver part/everything besides qunari and profane.
I generally prefer sacrificing maximum efficacy if it means not blowing up my companions haha.

But useful information anyway, I suppose that even by following this quest order you won't even need to repec as you'll have the xp to level up and get the cold-line

Well, the respecs may not be necessary, but Mission Ordering should be put into consideration for every Mage's Act 1 build IMO.

I like what you're doing. Untill someone mods out total immunities on NM this is certainly a way to make early Mage gameplay more fluid and less frustrating.
Certainly a way to make the game more enjoyable for those that found Mage dps subpar on their playthroughs because of not using enemy vulnerabilities to their full extent.
