I can understand what people are saying about he said my mage wasn't a person but in a way mages aren't normal at all and are very dangerous. I didn't get offended because he actually says "Mages cannot be treated like people. They are not like you and me."

In general, I believe people get WAY too offended over nonsense.  But here I would take offense.  When any group of humans, be they mages or whoever, get their humanity stripped from them, it is a powerful enabler for perpetrators of violence.

I guess I can see it interpreted both ways.  Personally, I think he's saying it's not safe to treat mages like you would regular people.  I'm sure this is Templaring 101.  If you treat Mary the Mage like your nice, friendly next door neighbor, then you are going to have a hard time killing her when she starts summoning demons.  You'll hesitate.  You'll say, "Mary wouldn't do that, she's good people."  You, and probably a bunch of other people, will die.

Thrask is a perfect example of this.  Grace starts spouting off like a crazy person, but he thinks, 'Wait, this is my buddy Grace.  I just need to talk to her; she won't hurt me.'  And then he goes squish.

I'm in no way saying this is a good system.  But what do you expect one of the templars who doesn't end up demon fodder to say?  I'm not surprised he says it.

Yeah, he thinks my character isn't really a person. That's so swoony.

And let's not forget that Cullen's codex states very clearly that he rose to the rank of Knight-Captain so quickly precisely because he agreed with Meredith and Meredith wanted him to influence the other templars to her liking.

I'm pretty open-minded and I wouldn't declare that I would NEVER romance him if given the chance, but I disagree that he's like Alistair* and it would take a lot to get me to see him as any sort of "fairy-tale romance" character.

*Not that he has to be, but someone earlier thought Cullen is a similar character.

But there are so many ways you can say that without flat out stating that mages aren't people.  I understand how people who like the character are going to interpret what he says in the most flattering light, but if the writers wanted him to come off as a templar who is gentle and understanding that mages are still human, they could have written him like that (hello Thrask!) rather than have us "interpret" that.

I didn't mean to imply that I interpreted him as gentle and understanding.

Then let me rephrase that to "a templar who is more moderate and doesn't want to dehumanize mages"--although, I don't think that's too different from what I wrote previously.  If not wanting to dehumanize people isn't "understanding" I'm not sure what is.

Close enough, I guess.  The point I was actually trying to make (not well, I take it) was that even if a part of him maybe does want to treat mages as people (could be true, could be false), he can't afford to see them that way if he wants to do his job.  To be a "good" templar you'd have to repress any feelings of that sort.  So he says "you can't treat mages like people" because it's true.  He can't.  Not unless he wants to be a "bad" templar like Thrask.

I dunno.  I would see it differently if he actually said mages aren't people.  But he says you can't treat them like people.  To me, there's a difference.  To other people, there isn't.  Whatever works for you.  The way different people see the characters differently can make the world more interesting.

How come? Im one of the most dedicated cullen fangirls and i have posted in his thread many times but not once i saw anything that other threads dont have when supporting their fav char/NPC
We are polite, we dont bash other charscters, the only thing we do is showing we like him....and dream of having him as a team member.....why that weirds you out?

It's not that I have seen any of you as being rude or mean... If you were that wouldn't creep me out. What creeps me out is the people saying they want to "fellicitate" him, or take his armor off, or how much they love him when we know so little about a character besides brief encounters scattered across two games. It's just... Guys, he's not real. It's nice to be able to fantasize I guess but... Really?

We wouldnt creep you out if we were rude? lol...Then maybe we should reconsider our behavior :P
And i had to google what fellicitate means which didnt help me understand the hidden meaning i think the word has when used regarding Cullen
And maybe we like that we dont know that much about him...so we could explore his char either with our imagination or in future games.
And we do know he is not a real character...
Never the less, as another poster mentioned it before, its not something other pl here dont do as well.....maybe a little too much more than us
I could analize the whys we and other ppl feel strong about certain chars but i dont want to turn this thread to a psychological debate
