hello, ok so ive always model swapped with no problems. but just now i tried changing the looks of a sword and shield...usually the ids are somthing like gen_***_***_act3_*** and they have always worked perfectly. But on this sword and shield i want the ids are w_shd_004a and w_lsw_022a...? Whats the deal here??

You are confused by reference name(which refers to the file), and the variation ID (which details model). The 2 are used in very different places.

hmm, well because in addonays weapon referance thread alot of them only have the referance name and not the variation id...what do you do with the ref name? and is it possible to find the id linked to the ref name for that specific item?

Those appearances are detailed with the actual appearance reference (which is the file name detailed in the item_variations), which is then referenced in the UTI file by variation ID. The gen_***_***_act3_*** reference is the reference to the UTI file itself.

so basically your saying w_shd_004a is a uti file? and in the item_var it has a path, such as art/character/weapons/ect...is that where you find this uti file? and if so where do I find this path? I havent had any luck in locating it...And in a diff thread you said somthing about the gffeditor not being able to edit uti files and that I should dl a diff editor is that correct?
p.s. sorry about all the noobish questions..I really appreciate you being so helpful when you could easily just not respond..Your always the first one to comment (usually the only lol) and that says alot about what kind of person you are =) I just like trying to do this stuff for myself so I can do exactly what I want to do and not hafto wait for somone else to do it where as it may not ever get done..Thanks again!

w_shd_004a is the model file located in the artfp.erf. The item_variations.gda is where that is linked with a few other attributes and given an ID number. The item file (UTI) uses the ID number to tell the game engine what appearance to display regarding that particular item.
edit: Yes, the pyGFF editor does not edit UTI files, it can only read/display them. You will need a different program to actually edit them.

ok lol, when I try opening artfp.erf in the editor all these different rescources (bunches of letters and numbers) pop up in a list with different endings like .msh .dds ect..so is it pretty much impossible to findout the id numbers of those model files?
