It did indeed make perfect sense, and I agree with you. Huzzah.ISnowdropI wrote...
Her voice grew on me after a while into the game but I think that it sounds too snobbish/girly to be Hawke. When I thought of female Hawke I imagined a tougher (not agressive) but independent, driven, cooler sounding female voice, if that made any sense

As for threatening, I thought she was ok. If you can't see someone with that voice as threatening then you can't, but for me, sarcastic FHawke was pretty scary sounding precisely because she didn't sound like she was taking other people's threats to her seriously. "Ho hum, I'm Hawke, if you attack me you're dead. I know it and if you don't know it, you're a moron."
As someone else noted, in real life, voices sometimes don't fit. One of the most dangerous guys I know has a girly voice. Completely incongruous. Nobody mocks him for it, though. Of course, maybe he is a badass beause he has a girly voice, compensation, and all that.

Cannot see myself ever being able to do a complete playthrough with her.

And if it's a character that you are trying to connect with, it's even more awkward. The voice was one of the many, MANY things that have made it supremely difficult to connect with my Hawke. I end up skipping through a lot of her lines. Good thing I read quickly, I suppose.

It's pretty good when it comes to good and sarcastic tones, but thats about it.
Thats why my evil hawke ended up being male.

Also, maybe it's just me but is it a trend around here with hating on the male protagonists? With Meer sure, he does sound indeed a bit monotone, but when I see some people calling Dude Hawke the same way, I just facepalm a bit.

However!
In combat, he sounds incredible. I think to myself that they must have hired the VA solely based on his chills-inducing battle shouts, inspiring my team (and me) to victory.

I don't understand why a lady has to have a deep, commanding voice to play a lead in an adventure/fantasy/action game. I loved Jennifer Hale's Shepard, but it was nice to see a different take, and personally, I liked how femme my Hawke could be.
But that's just me!

ETA: Not all men have "a deep, commanding voice," either, so y'know. Stereotyping all the way around. Viva diversity!

... maybe it's because I'm british and that accent was just so "fake" it anoyyed me.
I think this is probably the main issue you have here =/. I'm American, so my main exposure to the various accents has been through movies, tv, and some BBC television. I'm only starting to recognize the Welsh accent, and it's partly because of Merrill's voice actress, who I was familiar with from Doctor Who and Torchwood. In other words, I can't really tell when it's being faked. According to wikipedia however, Jo Wyatt, femHawke's actress is English (but it IS wikipedia, so who knows.)
I actually like her voice. It fits the way I make her look (pretty much the same in all my plays), and I think Bioware did a good job of finding someone who could sound mature, yet playful (with sarcastic personality) or harsh. As a woman, I'm critical of female actresses who don't sound/look like they fit the part. Sorry, but I never got the "heart surgeon" vibe from Meg Ryan in City of Angels. Angelina Jolie however, does seem like a badass spy in Salt.
This is the gamble Bioware had to take in going the full VO route, and I'm sure they were aware of it at the time. If they had cast an actress that you like, I may not appreciate her in the same way. It just so happens that the opposite was true. People are also totally dreaming if they think their budget could fit 2 or 3 VO for each gender. Have you ever looked at the credits for DAO? There are several actors who did over 5 roles each. Even while playing, I know I heard Jowan's voice from like 10 different people.
I'll say one thing, they wil never be able to have full-voice Warden character. I can see the forums rants now...
