If you want to hear a really fake accent, watch Brad Pitt in Seven Years in Tibet. You'll never complain about another one again, I promise.

But isn't Jo Wyatt a Brit? I didn't think Brits had to fake British accents.

Depends. If I tried a southern accent, it would sound horrible. The same thing applies to people there and the different regions. Of course, if the accusation is that she is trying too hard to sound "posh," I don't really have an opinion there xD.

I don't get the "snob" critiques anyway.
I hate to break it to you, but Hawke is a snob. The fact that she/he is raised in Lothering is irrelevant. Leandra is a snob, and hence raised a snob. Bethany sounds pretty snobby too. So does Carver in that earthy-snob way.

I swear Mass Effect and Dragon Age 2 are the only mediums where people are criticised for acting in character.

they... are not?

I didn't like LadyHawke at the very first listen. I was thinking she'd sound something like Jennifer Hale's Shepard and was put off.

Then I actually played the game and I fell in love with the acting. Amazing work =)

It didn't sound fake to me. Not a particularly contemporary accent, I admit, but then Dragon Age is not set in contemporary times :D

I LOVE Jo Wyatt.

Not as much as Jennifer Hale, but that lady is a VO legend.

And imagine the outcry if J. Hale had been added to DAII along with the wheel.

Waaaaaaah, ME is stealing my one and only true RPG spirit.

I think I'll replay female Hawke to see if I can stand it while mixing up the dialogue options.

If she's like MHawke you will sound like you have multiple personality disorder.

She just sounds ridiculous.  Her "aggressive" voice sounds so bad that it isn't even funny.  Way too meek and pathetic to manage to sound remotely intimidating.

As much as I dislike the Mass Infection of Dragon Age, I would have preferred Jennifer Hale.  Even if she couldn't pull off an English accent.

It isn't an "aggressive voice", it's rude. Says so in the guidebook. Also, I did notice that some of the dialogue options ended up as schizophrenic, but to be honest, you sometimes end up with that even if you pick the same icon over and over.

I like her voice, btw.

Love LadyHawke's voice! Also like FemShep. Both VA's did a great job.

I love her voice, I like the voice actress of female shepard but even so I was worried the female hawke would be too much like her, I was pleasantly surprised by her girlyness.

On the whole, I like the fem Hawke voice, but I do agree that her accent makes her sound like a high-class snob, rather than a refugee from a small village. I can understand if her mother had that accent, having been brought up in high society, but children don't generally adopt the accents of their parents when those accents are different from the environment in which they are raised - friends have a much larger influence.

So yeah, the voice acting was good, but I can understand how someone can find it grating, and the accent seemed a bit out of place.

To me, it's not so much that I hate her voice but more that it does not fit the default Hawke at all. It's too... soft, for lack of a better word. I expected something that sounds tougher, if that makes sense. I gave all my FemHawkes really soft and delicate features so that they'd fit the voice, and I've had no problems since then. But it still bugs the hell out of me during the prologue.

OP, what accent do you have? I'm from London and have what I think of as a neutral accent ...

And I can't think of any more accents offhand, but all of these sound horrible to me. What exactly would you suggest as an alternative?

Interesting.  I lived near London for a time and met a number of people with the same opinion.  I noticed there was a strong correlation with the way people viewed their own accent and how accepting they were of others: those who considered their accent to be "neutral" usually tended to be quite obnoxious about mine, whereas those who accepted that Londoners too spoke with an accent were much more easy going.  I like accents; I dislike accent snobbery.

As for Jo Wyatt's accent, it's fairly "generic southern".  Not something I would class as especially posh, but not unpleasant to listen to.

The voice actors for the Hawke's were part of what I enjoyed the most. I played several female Hawke's until I could wrestle no new people out of that voice lol So, I moved on to male Hawke, thinking i would have a difficult time and only hear " Vaughn" when I spoke. Ok, I did at first :P BUT: that is such a perfect voice for SO many attitudes and character backgrounds. I enjoy the voice acting immensely. I don't mind the accents at all actually.

Myself I liked it, it seemed more varied in tone than the male Hawke.
I can see why others don't however.
I created three male characters and started to wish that Hawke was permanently set as a female character, it just seemed so bland and bored no matter the intent.

Personally, I vastly preferred FemHawke to ManHawke in the voice department. ManHawke had a much higher tendency to come across as creepy (especially in romance-specific dialogue) and awkward for me.
One of the common criticisms I saw for FemHawke was that she often sounded bored, but somehow that really worked for me. Sarcastic FemHawke sounded like she was highly unamused by all the crazies running around Kirkwall that she had to deal with, and that's exactly how I as a player felt.
