Yeah. Just run away to previous room, kill brekker and the 2 rogues that follow him, then come back to kill the others.

Had no problem when I was a rogue, now, with my mage play-through ...

Yeah I ended up kiting them all back to the other room so that the 2nd wave didn't spawn, but frankly that feels like cheating (mind you, so is having 5 rogues who can 2-shot my 2h warrior tank and 1 shot any other party member).

I played that encounter multiple times (on Nightmare). Only twice did I not have to run from the room.

Archer Hawke -- combustion grenade all three rogues on the platform plus one for those on the right, mark of death, assassinate, assault and focus fire Bekker then just clean up the rest of them

Mage Hawke -- I forget exactly how I did this but I started off running to the back of the room but I did not have to run down the hall to avoid secondary spawns. I again used 1-2 grenades which are super useful in this fight as there are multiple elite assassins and you absolutely need to lock a few of them down. Hawke had Cold Blooded which certainly upped her damage output.

This is a lot harder during this playthrough as a Mage. When I fought him as a rogue, it seemed to be a lot easier.

Any tips? Even kiting and running all the way to the other end of the map I get my ass handed to me.

Trying to get through this battle without respeccing, but maybe it will be necessary. The main problem I'm running into is that all these freaking rogues are immune to Glyph of Paralysis and Petrify. The only means I have of immobilizing them is Gravitic Ring and Horror.

Here is my current party composition:

Fenris - Cleave/Claymore, Massacre, Destroyer upgraded Mighty Blow, most of the Tevinter Fugitive Tree, Whirlwhind, Rally

Mage Hawke - Most of the Blood Mage tree, Most of the Force Mage tree, upgraded Chain Lightning, Hex of Torment, Rock Armor

Anders - Regroup, Most of his unique Vengeance skill tree, upgraded Chain Lightning, upgraded Glyph of Paralysis, Heal, Winter's Grasp, Tempest, Dispel, Tempest

I've been alternating between Merril and Varric for the 4th companion, should I consider bringing Aveline instead?

Merril: Death Hex, Death Cloud, Horror, Sleep, upgraded Petrify, Blood of the First, upgraded Chain Lightning, upgraded Stonefist, Rock Armor, Walking Bomb,

Varric: Pinning Shot, Bursting Arrow, Fatiguing/Overpowering Fog, Rush, Confuse, Speed, Blindside, Rhyming Triplet, upgraded Bianca's Song, Kickback

I think I'm going to try once without any tank (3 mages + Varric), since the only time I have been able to attack is after retreating and using Gravitic Ring in a choke point, maybe Fenris is not so useful here.

Granted i'm on hard (did it once on nightmare but didnt want to deal with some of the stupid elements of it) and actually found this fight the easiest as a mage. Mostly due to gravitic ring.
With the upgrade throw it in between you and them. They stealth and come towards you and then end up unstealthing in the middle of it because they got stuck there.

This was my brekker encounter

IMO this is the second hardest fight in act II, Xebenkeck taking first prize.

on my first mage play i did it simply by falling back and droping gravity ring to block them . rise and repeat, much easier as rogue where you can basicly 1 shot each of the assasins.

What i hate about them assassins is that they like going stealth the second i use my killercombo on his ass... making him immune to the damage completely although he's still in backflip and not even gone yet :/

OK I found a way to beat Brekker very quickly on Nightmare playing as a mage.

Before entering Brekker's area for the final battle, I went back to Darktown and dumped Fenris for Merril, resulting in a party consisting of 3 mages + Varric.

Step 1 - retreat to the first chokepoint (the little walkway in the previous room adjacent to the room where Brekker appears).

Step 2 - cast Gravitic Ring in the chokepoint,

Step 3 - one of the mages casts Death Hex on one of the Coterie Rogues with high health (not Brekker)

Step 4 - focus fire and spells on the Coterie Rogue affected by Death Hex until Gravitic Ring expires.

Step 5 - retreat to next chokepoint, far enough away so that Gravitic Ring cooldown expires

Step 6 - cast Gravitic Ring in chokepoint

Step 7 - cast Death Hex on the same Coterie Rogue from the first chokepoint (who should now have reduced health)

Step 8 - cast Walking Bomb on the same Coterie Rogue

Step 9 - focus fire and spells on the Coterie Rogue until he dies and Walking Bomb damage kills Brekker and all the other Rogues. (around 12000 damage)

Combustion bombs and glyphs of paralysis help a lot in this fight. Also, using Aveline and the dog as a meat shield helps.

No kiting required. Video 1 yoinks<tm> Assassins out of stealth. Video 2 just zaps them. In both version, Hawke is a mage.

Well I'll give some general advice on this fight.

The key is to get the assassins down first, if you kill all thrash and the elite assassins have survived next wave will initiate and you will have 5 assassin elites running in circles around you.

Stonewall upgraded to Bulwark works wonders against assassins.

For general party advice without any specifics:

-Remember that assassins always try to backstab the party-member who is closest to the location where they have gone into stealth. Aggro doesnt matter, watch your proximity.

-Have Aveline run up to Brekker and taunt all foes in there. Make sure you dont kill those thrash. Time Aveline's Bulwark so every time the assassin tries to backstab he does minimal damage, this is quite easy. (they do damage about 2-5% of her health if she is bulwarked)

While Aveline is keeping those fellows upstairs busy have the rest of your party kill the other assassin who spawned downstairs next to you. You can kill those thrash(downstairs) as well if every enemy upstairs is alive. These assassins are immune to Petrify/Paralysis so use other means to CC.

So at this point you should have downstairs cleared and due to good timing with Bulwark, Aveline should be doing ok.

Rest is easy. Trick is not having too many assassins fighting you at the same time. Having Fenris along with Aveline helps if Hawke is not a warrior. You get two Bulwark cooldowns, which provides a lot more error interval. And you stagger a lot more which is always welcome.

Some general abilities to note:

Templar - Holy Smite brings assassins out of stealth
Shadow - Decoy helps a lot if you do not have two Warriors with Bulwark
Warrior - Stonewall/Bulwark.. Can't emphasize on this enough. Works wonders.
Mage - Death Hex. Self explanatory.
Rogue - Confuse. Assassins tend to forget to stealth after they are confused even if the effect is gone, probably a bug.

With these you shouldnt need any specific party configuration, provided you know your CCCs =)

Alternatively ... don't let them backstab you. :)

Oh, and assassins love dogs.

I replayed this fight again for testing and I found that it seems Death Hex and Hex of Torment stack.

So if you have 2 or 3 mages with either of these spells, cast them at the same time before your highest damage spells.

I am just starting act II as a level 13 mage at nightmare difficulty. First quest was the Du Puis mansion, with some night sisters along the way. Easy. Then I started blackpowder and got my ass handed to me at the ambush and at the poisoned barrels. Then I restarted act II and came to Brekker instead, and got my ass handed to me again. WTF!!! What I am pissed about is that the difficulty level just spike without any warning. First there are some easy trash and suddenly I am swarmed by 3 assassins while I was happily gravitic-bombing Brekker and his two assassins upstairs away! WTF!!!

Maybe I have to come back at level 17, eh? Basically I have to find out a proper quest order which is doable, in order to reach higher levels.

Cone of cold (maxxed talent), death hex, hex of torment and haste followed up by a warrior scything , ww and mighty blow seemed to always clear it out for me, even on nightmare. Just make sure you don't have any normal healing potions on hand..The lil buggers like to steal and use them.

Whew, after 12 tries, I finally made it. Like on most videos, I stopped Brekker with gravitic ring and concentrated on the first assassin on the right side. With brittle->Mighty Blow, Kickback, Stonefist he went down without stealthing. One of Brekkers non-elite tugs got a walking bomb, and tempest by Merril, then hex of torment on Brekker, Spirit Bolt and focus fire, and that sukker went down. One assassin left. I managed to brittle one with cone of cold and Fenris mighy blowed him to 10% with a crit (am I lucky or what!?). Like in most videos (and this was key for winning, I think) the spawn of two assassins, and an archer, were slowed by a firestorm and after that we did a withdrawal until gravitic ring was ready. The two assassins were in the group, but with some micromanagement and a chain lightning, Varric could miasmic flask two of them so that my group could finally get some distance, which Hawk used for a pull of the abyss and gravitic ring. One assassin slipped through, the other an the archer got caught. With kickback, horror, mighty blow, chain lighting he could be contained until he was down, but killed Hawke in the last moment. The gravitic ring dissolved after a few precious seconds of focus fire. Stonefist and mighty blow contained the assassin long enough out of stealth to kill him, again with some lucky criticals. The archer went down easily after that. I think there was another assassin spawn on top of the stairs, but I lost track while microing and trying to survive.

Whew.

Thats right.Enemy assasins never steal elfroot potions. So leave the ordinary health pots at home.
