Security: Norton 2011

As of now I am running DA series at max in game settings and I also play DDO online at max as well.

 Ok now on to cleaning;

For your tower/case itself this will depend on your area, if you get lots of dust bunnies and pet hair and the like, you may have to open your case more often to get the dust out, myself I do it every month or 2 as I have pretty much a dust free area. You should do this however as it is not just the dust bunnies but that really fine dust that just won't blow off with compressed air, ( Vid card Fans really like this stuff for some reason ) I either use a Q-tip or smallbrush to get this stuff off in conjunction with compressed air.

Doing this for the first time may seem hard but it is a snap, all towers open different so just follow the steps for yours and all should be fine.

Just make sure you have all power dis-connected and you keep yourself free of staic when dealing with your internals and follow the direction on the compressed air can as well. Don't do this if you just got finished dragging your feet over the carpet and/or petting your cat or dog. :)

As for cleaning up junk folders, cashed files, registry cleaning and the like I use a few things and have been for awhilenow so I haven't had any problems. When dealing with Downloaded apps I always use the default appsettings when trying for the first time then after you get use to how they are supposed to work then you can set them the way you like for your situation(s).

The one thing I do change however is to turn them off from starting on boot up I am a person who only wants to scan something when I want to so everything following I use in that manner. My security is the only app that boots with my computer, which is the way it should be I think. The fewer processes running the better, if they don't need to be that is. All systems are different so your are the only one to judge what should be running.

As for scanning I usually do these every few weeks, and this willalso depend on the type of person you are if you go to iffy sites or download files from iffy sites etc.then you may do these scans more often.

As for where I get my apps my peferred sites are, http://download.cnet.com/windows/ or http://filehippo.com/ if you have a different site you trust that is fine.

As for my apps they are as follows:

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...er/?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;5

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;3

http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1

As you see I like Cnet.com only because I like the info about each app and I can read what others might say about the app etc. As I said I am on XP home so just make sure to read the info to make sure it works for your OS.
And again, I don't have any of these loading on start up other-wise they are used at default settings.

If anyone would like to know how I have mine sett feel free to contact me and I will be happy to let you know, all I can say is I have never had an issue using these at my settings and how many times one needs to use them will only be reflected by that persons internet use, surfing bogus sites or downloading possible bogus files, well that is just asking for trouble.

The first defence to any security begins with yourself because no security app is 100 percent. Again as I said the only thing ( Security ) I run on boot is my Norton, thats it.

Now as you get comfortable with your system and you find yourself looking for a tweak or two, looking for that magic app to help speed things up ( Does anything like that really exist ???? )

I think this site is one if not the best to tell you more about services that are running on your system, and what you can turn off, depending on what kind of user you are, Novice to Hard core.

http://www.blackviper.com/

Well thats it all hope you at least have a look at these apps and read upon them before you try them, make sure your comfortable that you know how they will work on your system. Ed-ju-ma-cate yourself first.

All I can say is that these work for me and my system.

If you have any questions about them Please feel free to drop me line for my settings anything other then that you are on your own.

Take care, Good Luck  W.S.Posted Image

Hello All,

Well I thought I would give a little info as to what I do when installing or just reinstalling. As these  steps are basically the same I will do the reinstall as there are a few things I do that you may not have to do on a install so here it goes. And as this is BSN I will use Dragon Age Origins C.E. as the example and as I'm sure many have done approx. a week and a half ago sadly.

Windows XP Home OS

On the uninstall there is an option to save yourcharcater folder info but if you don't trust it you can just go to:
Start, My Docs, Bioware, Dragon Age, Find the toon folder and place it on your desktop and just replace it with the new generated toon folder after the install.

**** And This is just what I like doing so others may choose to re-install a different way, All is good ****

Step One: click Start, All Progs, Dragon Age Origins, open and click uninstall, then choose your option.

Step Two : I always do a reboot after installing or reinstallling

Step Three: After the reboot I like running my cleaner apps that you can find in the above post, CCleaner, Glary Registry Repair,  Wise Registry Cleaner,  Advanced System Care.

Step Four: Some reason I got in the habit of doing another reboot

Step Five: Upon reboot ( If you choose ) I turn off my Norton Anti-Virus, and Fire wall and prceed to install DA;O in the default location, others may choose a different place. Just follow the install steps with needed keys and such.

Step Six: After installed I don't start a game, I again do a reboot ( Just Me and my ways :)  )

Step Seven: On reboot I start the game  BUT!!! on the spalsh screen I Click on configure and I don't play in full screen mode yet. This way when your game starts and if your security trys to do something you should see the pop up for you to allow or deny ( At Least with Norton )

Step Eight: Do a Test Toon when you are in game and it looks like all is well make a save called " Test " and quit the game.

Step Nine: If you put your toon folder on the desktop just go to the new toon folder ( With Test In it ) and replace it with your original.

Step 10: Start your game and start a fresh toon or just resume a saved game.

*** Note ****  Go to your driver site for your card and download the newest or get a rolled back driver for your card
before doing the next steps.

For those who are rolling back a video driver or the like you can do this between steps 2 and 3. I have an ATI card so when uninstalling the old drivers you can find the uninstaller in the following way. ( Again this is XP Home )

Click On Start, My Computer, Local Disk "C", Program Files, ATI, CIM, Bin, Click the icon that says Setup Catalyst Install Manager and follow the prompts.

After that it will ask you to reboot, you can but do this next boot  in safe mode, when you are booted in safe mode run : Driver Sweeper " for ATI stuff when it is done clean all that it finds. When that is done reboot and use the new driver you downloaded to install the new or older CCC for you ATI card. Then Reboot.

It would be wise to do vid drivers and the like first before you install or reinstall a game. And make sure you are all up to date with your OS as well.

Well thats it hope this was a helpfull post if anyone has anything to add Please feel lree to do so,

 Take Care, and Happy Gaming.....

 Cheers! W.S.
