Isabela loves the Hanged Man so she spends most her time there anywhere. Feels out of place in Hightown. Fenris lives in a Mansion full of supplies. Meanwhile Anders & Merrill live in shacks at best. Though Merrill will still spend time in her hovel despite living with you. Cause of the Mirror. If Anders had the option to live in an estate or Darktown with all the people even more poor than elves. Which do you think he'd pick?

No, it's due to the fact that they make better house cleaners with the magic and all. :)

Apparently though despite having a great teacher Merrill still can't play music worth a crap.

I've never had an inkling to romance her or Anders.. I guess it's just the way they come across is all, that rubs me the wrong way.

Needy... I don't think so, Merrill's used to live on only a few things, I guess, she even tells you about the Dalish handing out only needful things.
Anders - dunno, I don't plan to romance him in this or next lifetime, but I guess any place is as good as another when you're building bombs, so he could blame it on Sandal.

Are you also just ignoring how Isabela was kind of doing the "Just for fun" thing and how Fenris basically runs off after scared or some crap? Meanwhile the other two just happen to be mages and do not act that way. Just the fact of them being non mages is more likely a coincidence.

Some banter and dialogue seems to indicate that mages are more amorous than non-mages as a general rule. If that's true, I could see the justification for it... a stronger connection to the fade makes them more emotionally charged.

Can't speak for Anders, but in the Hawke/Merrill instance, it's only natural for Hawke to invite Merrill after like, what, 3/4 years since they met? True, it took a while to get into a full-fledged relationship but it's not a big leap in my book.
Plus, Hawke is supposed to have a crapload of money (inventory golds aside :D) AND has a bigger place to live in, so why not sharing?
Varric is the other wealthy companion but Merrill's driving him bankrupt...

That's the thing. With the amount of time that's passed of course it makes sense for them to be at that stage in a relationship. But at the same time, the way the scene happens it's kind of like you have sex and then they are all like "I love you, let's live together". It just seems so sudden, even though it really isn't.

I think it's a coincidence that the two clingy LIs are mages. My mage PC certainly isn't "needy."

Morrigan was never needy in Origins, so it's hardly a mage thing. Also, Merrill never struck me as very needy. She always wanders off back down to the Alienage in mine, apparently.

Anders is clingy, certainly, but that's more part of the obssessive and slightly paranoid personality he's got than being a mage.

And if you tell Anders "I'm not ready for that," he flips out and says you betrayed him and he'll never forget it.  Such a drama queen.

Apparently all the dwarves are only into other dwarves. Besides like an Old Tale of Mathias the Dwarfson. So players do not get to have Varric like I couldn't have Sigrun. Live with it.

Them trying to hop into Hawke's house makes more sense than Isabela and Fenris refusing to talk/acknowledge Hawke for 3 years and then picking up the relationship like nothing happened. -_-

I'll take the LET ME LIVE WITH YOU! Over that crap anyday.

Imho, Merrill seeks somebody who would take care of her in a strange, alien world (which does not cheapen her true affection towards Hawke, there's proof enough anywhere from banter to dialogues). Even in rival romance, she knows Hawke's the only one who'll be there for her.
Anders, bah, can't stand him so I don't really know. I guess their being mages is just a coincidence - unless you want to stretch it a little and go onto saying that all mages, when outside their element like Circles or Clans, seek some kind of approval and acceptance among "normal" people.
Isabela is just as needy (love-wise, I mean) but she is better at hiding it.

my warden is a dwarf and he had a thing for human witches of the wilds. and if you lisen to verric he talks about how he likes the bar maid.

I got the same feeling you did about Merrill. The difference is that I didn't see Merrill as being quite as healthy a relationship, since it seems more like she fixated on the first person who showed her any sort of decency in years (Hawke). That sort of thing happens very commonly with people that have low self-esteem that come from a background of emotional abuse. It can work, but it would never be a relationship of equals, and that's something my Hawke valued. It's also the reason my Hawke found herself drawn to Isabela... Isabela's also got emotional issues, but she's much more mature about dealing with them and genuinely working through them.

He talks about Edwina which is a reference to another game and is never actually seen in DA2. A reference about a Transvestite mage if I recall. Oghren flirted with women but didn't act on them and Player Characters do not count.
