It's the vocal equivalent to smile & nod. When it only happens 10% of the time this means that you get to pick your response 90% of the time. Problem?

Edit: spell check

There is certainly an amount of unprompted dialogue in DA2 which is influenced by your dialogue selection history. I believe it is a facet of the personality tracking system.

A snarky Hawke will say something different than a diplomatic or brooding Hawke. To reference a previous example, instead of "Buy your own drink!" my Hawke says "You drink the swill here?" to Isabela.

I really appreciate the concept of tracking the PC's personality, but I had a few issues with its implementation here. Namely I disliked some things my snarky Hawke said during serious moments when snark was definitely not appropriate. Just because I like to crack a few jokes doesn't mean I won't be solemn, sympathetic, or respectful when the situation calls for it.

the things that your hawke says is a result of the selections you make, the personality you've given them, and circumstance. If someone runs up to you, clearly in distress, you're going to ask them what happened, ignoring them really isn't a worthwhile option, no point in selecting "what happened" from a wheel when that's the only choice.
