Thats probably what I enjoyed most about DA2, how well the characters were written. Marill is my favorite by far.
Who else hates Merril?

I'm sorry but by Act III maybe even two she should have been done with the not getting peoples jokes part of her character. That above all made her look stupid and in the clouds. It was an attempt at cutness over done, at least in my eyes it was.

I like the new elf design (less stereotypical), I love her accent, but her 'ditsiness' gets a little too much at times, kind of makes her hard to take seriously at times.
It should have gotten progressively less throughout the game. Naive in act 1, getting used to things by act 2. Grown up by act 3.

Merrill is less "ditzy" in act 3.

I don't hate Merrill. But I don't like her either. She's just okay in my book since I'm not really a fan of naive and cutesy characters.
I suppose the writers wanted to portray a blood mage that wasn't only NOT evil, but a complete 180 degree in personality as well. I mean, naive and innocent wouldn't be the first words I'd choose to describe a blood mage but those would be my first choice for describing Merrill in particular. So I'm guessing they wanted a contrast.
Still, I find her comments and party banter funny.
