She just looks younger is all. Hawke looks a lot older than her. Just my opinion though.

Why's that? I only think i remember her mentioning her last seeing her parents ten years ago when she was 15 to Bethany.ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...

The only companion that got on my nerves was Carver.
I don't have the Sebastian DLC, so can't comment on him.

City Elves live as long as humans.
At least that's what i remember from Origins.

The Dalish tend to.

She was an adult in Origins, at least twenty-something. Hawke is at most twenty-four when the game begins (which is a good several months after the origin stories), and likely a few years younger. Mine was twenty at the start of the game, for example.

Does she have fans outside the Merrill thread that I haven't met? The guys in there have always seemed quite pleasant to me.

Well, you all like Merrill. If they came across people who didn't like Merrill for whatever reason, they might be less cordial.

Compared to some people (like those abominable talimancers) The Merrill fans like me are sane and cordial. I haven't seen a Merrill act in a trollish manner yet so color me a tad biased if they've trolled someone. I think the Merrill fans are some of the nicest fans here and I am proud to call myself a Merrill fan.

Maybe it's just me, maybe it's the redesign of the elves, but I'm seriously not diggin' Merril. At All. It's got to be the combination of her new elf design, Welsh accent, and horrid naievety... Anyone else care to share why they like her or why not?
I love her because I find the new elven look (barring a few elves like Huon) to be awesome and Merrill looks beautiful. Her accent is also beautiful, and she's actually really smart. She has some moments of naivety, but if you examine things and the lore, you'll see she is really smart. Smarter even than Marethari.
- First, she doesn't believe the Chantry's views on demons and spirits. She says that they're all spirits. She also says that all spirits are dangerous. Justice is certainly dangerous. And I value her word more than the word of someone who blindly accepts Chantry teachings..
- Second, she rebuilt an Eluvian from only one shard and other miscellaneous items (not junk. I just don't know what they were. And even if it was junk, it was useful junk) She would've completed it too eventually as Marethari says.
- Third, Marethari spread pointless fears to the rest of the clan (in an attempt to bring Merrill back) saying the mirror was still cursed when Merrill had cleansed it and repeatedly said so. These pointless fears are what caused Pol to act irrationally and run away from Merrill. Sure it was Pol's own fault for getting himself killed, but Marethari was the root of that problem.
- Fourth, Marethari intervened and took the demon into her body. She did this because, as she said, "The demon's plan was always for you to complete the mirror. It would've been a doorway out of this prison and into our world". And that's the stupidest thing she's ever said, because the Eluvian was still incomplete, and even if it had been completed, the Eluvian links to a place "beyond this world, beyond the fade" as Morrigan told us. And Morrigan had been doing extensive research on the mirror.
- Fifth, when Merrill was planning to go to the mountaintop, she asked Hawke to come along because she didn't want to run the risk of becoming an Abomination should the demon try and escape. Should that have happened, she was to be slain by Hawke. Naivety would've been her saying "Oh he's been helpful. He wouldn't possess me.". Instead, her initiative and caution proves she isn't naive.
- Sixth, she beat my Hawke to the punch by saying "I love you" first. My Hawke was totally gonna say it first
. Seriously though, she was really good at trying to console Hawke after Mama Hawke's death.
- There are certainly other reasons, but I can't recall. maybe after other people post.

Now, if put to the question of why I like Merrill, I'd answer that I appreciated her outlook. She values history and knowledge, and she's self-sacrificial. She may seem clueless to some, but it's worth noting that it's partly a product of her isolation and partly a product of her personality. She acts completely differently among her fellow elves, as you can see when she speaks to the Dalish (either in DA:O or in DA2).

The Elves 'Believe" they were immortal once. The Imperium says that wasn't the case.
"As for the elves, their understanding of their own religion is incomplete. The whole truth was lost along with Arlathan and their immortality -- much of their lore was kept by a tradition of apprenticeship, handed down from the knowledgeable to the young, and this relied on the fact that the knowledgeable were eternal. Slaves also had less opportunity to spread their lore, so the sudden aging of the knowledgeable meant that much of this information was simply gone after several generations. This, of course, is their belief: the ancient Imperium maintained that the elves were never immortal to begin with, and that their lore was lost simply because the Imperium forbade its teaching."

And I don't know how much smartness you can attribute to following the directions of a demon, it isn't like she came up with it herself.

Whether or not the elves were actually immortal, the Dalish have been exhibiting progressively greater lifespans.
Compared to city elves that live in squalor. I wouldn't attribute too much to that.

She's the most powerful mage in the game. That takes smartness.

And compared to humans, as well. Zathrian aside, I remember someone mentioning that Keepers routinely lived past a century.

That part I don't know how much is overall truth beyond Zahtrian's justifications for why he was older. I'm not sure how much older they are than say an Alienage elf. Just that the City Elves may have more likely to be arrested or murdered every day of their lives.

I don't think Tevinter really knows for certain. Elves have been on Thedas forever, and then humans came. It's just a Tevinter belief regarding Arlathan elves' immortality. As for the lore, that's just abhorrent. Banning the teaching of it. I realize they were slaves and all, but still.
Also, if you think about it, why would the elves have become reclusive from Tevinter if they weren't immortal? I don't see any reason why. Of course, I'm open to ideas. Who knows if they were immortal or not..
