I hate Merrill. She's my worst-liked companion. I don't find her cute at all, she's just anime-cartoonish. And skinny as a wire. She's stupid. Or as Alistair might say, shtupid.

Because Merrill does things you don't agree with? That doesn't make someone stupid.

Caralampio wrote...

The whole mirror project is so... wrong, unwise, bad, etc. Everyone can see it except her. Aaaargh!

Given Hawke's ignorance of the Eluvian and Dalish lore, I don't see how the protagonist can judge that it's good or bad with any actual accuracy. Merrill says it can help her people, and we're never provided with any evidence that contradicts her statement. The Eluvian was important enough that Morrigan decided to enpower the one that was in the Dragonbone Wastes to prepare for the future, after all.

Caralampio wrote...

She poses like a "good" girl but she's bad to the bone. Will stop for nothing to get the darned mirror, no matter if her entire clan dies. Innocently: "I never did anything, whay is everyone mad at me?" I want to wring her neck.

The Warden also stops at nothing to end the Blight in Ferelden, and both Merrill and the Warden are trying to save their respective people.

I don't hate Merrill, but I don't much like her either. Physically... she just creeps me out (as all the elves except Fenris do). She looked too young for any of my Hawkes of either gender so I didn't even touch the romance aspect. I just... found her creepy in every way. Sorry Merrill.

Too young? That's probably too bad for my Danarius-clone-Hawke, then. He was so looking forward to romancing her. :P

That's... very creepy.  It doesn't help that I picture this going down with Vaughn's voice.

Would you prefer he romanced Fenris? :P

But yeah, I think that face morph was built to ooze evil and creepitude. Even when he uses the nice dialogues, he sounds sinister. It's actually fantastic.

She risks her life for her people. She never asked the Keeper to do what she did, and she did make preparations in case she personally became an abomination, something she was willing to risk to help her people. Wardens who learn blood magic make a deal with a demon, too.

Frankly, the end of her story just smacks of Bioware's writing goal in this game: to make everything turn to crap, no matter what.

D'AWWWWWWWW!!!! Saved

I'm not a Hello Kitty fan, but I can always appreciate the cuteness of Hello Kitty, mainly because it's a kitty. Combine that with Merrill, and I'm drowning in cuteness.

For me, the Qunari plot was as immersion-shattering as the ending. They weren’t villified, I agreed with them, and yet I still had to go and fight them. As for the ending, as far as I was concerned they could both go and kill each other, but no…
So I side with the mages, and of course the charming, intelligent, wise first enchanter *immediately* resorts to blood magic to become some twisted abomination. Why?! It was so incongruous with his character thus far!
Loved Merrill though. She was delightful.

Ok. You do realize that this thread doesn't have anything to do with the Qunari or the ending right?

Just because you agreed with the Arishok doesn't mean he won't kill you. He would only let you live if you converted to the Qun. And there was never an option where Hawke says "I want to be a Qunari!"*

*Qunari translates to "people of the Qun", yet it's used by Thedas citizens to mean every Kossith.

Orsino didn't "immediately" resort to Blood Magic. He had obviously been studying for a good while, as you can't just cut your wrist and suddenly become a Harvester. He had to have known something about Amgarrak. But he definitely knew a ****load about Blood Magic.

Indeed.

Yep. Feel free to look at it and sing along.

Splashin' in the puddles,
Cutting at my vein
My head's a little muddled
But I'm happy once again.

I don't hate Merrill.  In fact, I kind of like her, but she frustrates me.  You're forced to take her on her word about the eluvian and what it supposedly means, even though she doesn't really explain it to you.  She's bumbling and odd, which could be endearing, but it's not exactly confidence-building either especially when you know what she's tinkering with.  I really have a hard time thinking of her as being truly able to handle what she's embraced.

I've tried on multiple playthroughs to befriend her, but I can't seem to get what makes her tick, especially in the first act.  Inevitably, whenever I visit her in her home that first time, I end up with rivalry.  Being "diplomatic" and reassuring nets you rivalry.  Being snarky nets you rivalry.  I tried the complete a-hole option, and ended up the same way.  Her first gift of the halla inevitably nets me a huge ton of rivalry, even if I've barely talked to her and she's "neutral."

I understand that history is important to the Dalish, but she never really expains enough for me to really get why the eluvian matters.  There's that "shem" barrier that I can't ever breach, and she's not exactly forthcoming, either, even if you side with her.

umm.... what did you say to Merrill when she asked you if you would visit her after you complete the Sundermount quest (before you actually enter the house)? Did you say yes or no? If you said no, I think that nets a big rivalry gain which might've set your relationship on the rivalry path.

first impressions are key you know ^_^

I said, "Yes," and took the rivalry hit with Fenris.  It doesn't seem to matter what I do-- she hates me from the get-go, even with the small +5 friendship you get from saying yes.

**shrug**  For all I know, it's a bug, because whenever I visit, she always says, "I didn't think you'd come," even if I said I would.

She always says "I didn't think you'd come". That part isn't a bug. I pick sarcastic options and I always got friendship. Maybe it is a bug.

Merrill is mixed for me but she is more towards the bottom on the list imo... it seems that my opinion of characters changed depending on which which Hawke I played. My first playthrough is diplomatic Hawke who tries to be nice to everybody, I had her at 80% friendship and Merrill feels like a really stubborn younger sister but one that Hawke cares a lot despite the misgivings (this Hawke has the "typical oldest child" trait )... but we know by know Friendship path isn't really helping many of the characters themselves <_<

On my 2nd, Hawke is a mage who is totally anti-blood magic (a little like Anders minus the whole possession fiasco) and got her to full rivalry which I find to be much more satisfying. I don't necessarily hate her but there are a lot of scenes which she went all "don't lecture me as if you know better" or "you're not Dalish, wtf do you know" that totally turn off some players. Personally I went like you're making it really hard for me to want to care about helping you... should I even :pinched:? But then she came in and told me that even though she disagree, Hawke may actually be right after all (although this scene is bugged so it may not supposed to trigger at all) so I was a little nicer to her after that I guess

I think this does not only goes for Merrill, I wasn't liking Fenris that much in my first playthrough, I thought he was attacking Anders and mages really bad all the time (Beth is a mage Elf!)... and I was adoring Anders cos he is my Hawke's LI or that he is my fave character in DA;A... But in my 2nd it goes the other way round, Anders ended up being the slightly irritating one (I mean we were getting your pee deposit for whatever you plan to make... and it's hardly the time to be talking about my relationship with Fenris... in a sewer...) and he went all "does your support for mages ends at the chantry door"

The only I can't seem to like at all is Sebastian, he is way too preachy even on rivalry path...

Well maybe slightly off topic to OP's question but I wonder... where the hell did Merrill get her Eluvian?! The only one she encountered is the Tamlen and Mahariel found... that was shattered by Duncan (her Eluvian is broken too so I guess it's the same one) but in Witch Hunt, I found it still to be in the same place in the same ruin and Arianne said the clan (Marethari's) had moved on long ago... Did Merrill came back and get it afterwards? lol

Well I'm asking this because I'm still trying to justify Merrill, I don't think it's not wrong for her to want to discover her people's history but the whole demon and blood magic is really bad for me... Also, she said at first that she just wanted to find Tamlen using it but then she went all obsessive with it... in the end I'm getting Gollum vibes lol
