BioWare's marketing and box design have always been substandard.
Instead of focusing on the unique aspects, they just give an impression of another generic sci-fi or fantasy game the market is saturated with.
For example, Mass Effect 2's box and promotions show only one thing. A generic sci-fi shooter with a generic space marine. The dialog, adventure aspects and character customisation are barely touched upon at all.. if they're even mentioned.

I thought the ME2 trailer was well done though:

www.youtube.com/watch

It's amazing how much music can sell.  My favorite Dragon Age Origins trailer was an edit by a fan, Senshinobi, who used another Two Steps from Hell piece of music and official clips.

www.youtube.com/watch

The official trailer for DA2 focused on a single character and combat with a mighty foe, and the background was also very monotone.  All vital clues of the much discussed shortcomings, epecially when you compare it with ME2.  Both trailers use the voice of their known actors, but in ME2 you get many different snap shots in the game, and a great deal of color.  My first question when I saw the DA2 trailer was, "Why doesn't this look like the ME2 one... what are they hiding?"

No it didn't.  Go reread Bioware's post,  they do not claim at all to have sold 1 million units,  they claim to have moved 1 million units.  They cannot use the word "Sold" unless they can definitvely show they did,  as the SEC would fine the heck out of them because they're publicly traded.

So by virtue of the fact that they did not state they "Sold" 1 million units,  we can definitively confirm they did not sell 1 million units.  The only reason not to use the word is because you didn't do it,  but you want people to think you did,  so you carefully craft a statement designed to make the reader think "Sold" instead of shipped.

IGN says differently.

IGN are making the same mistake as you, if they had sold that many they would have said so. They can't say it if they haven't as that would be misleading investors and would land them in a world of pain. Passing the 1 million mark could mean anything, 1 million shipped, 1 million pressed or even 1 million thrown in the sea.

Does anyone else get a little angry at that trailer? It seems like another broken promise to me.

1. Don't ever get the cool 'rip someone apart with fade arms' anywhere in the game, remember the dev diary that talked about how your hawke could be taken in different directions and that you could: Have a special power noone else had or be a leader of men? Yeah, never happened.

2. The arishok fight was boring and the only difference in difficulty was time spent running around and dodging/gulping potions. No real difficulty, just tedium.

Yep, another lie from the braniacs at Bioware. In the dev diary they said that we could get a super power or command a army if we played in a certain way. WTF happened? WHY LIE? Dragon Age 2 goes down in a pre-determined path and pretty much ends the same way however you play to become champion.

Nor does Flemeth really have any significant part in the game, unlike TIM.

It'd be too easy for EA to ****can a Dragon Age sequel based on DA2's performance. Don't be so eager to dogpile the game. If you doubt EA has influence over what Bioware does, look no further than Dragon Age 2.

EA kept Sims Online running for 4 years and that was a mega flop.

I still predict there will be a DA:3 but they will learn from the mistakes made.

Oh crap, my troll radar just exploded.

You should probably get it fixed then. Someone with a differing opinion than you is not a Troll.

I for one think the companions were way better in DA2 than in Origins.

Morrigan is awesome. Allistair is crap. Loghain is alright. Oghren is the worst dwarven npc ever in a BIO game. Leliana is alright. Zevran is plain garbage.

HOW DARE YOU!!!! Posted Image

I as well as many others think Alistairs humour shines through and is one of the big highlights of the game.

"And I say half of the DA2 sales it owes to DA:O."

You'd be wrong. Both DA1, and DA2 owe their high sales to BIO's reputation that have managed to gain over the past 10+ years with games like BG, BG2, NWN, JE (despite it being on the lower end sales wise), KOTOR, and ME1.

DA1 deserves no credit since it probably had people loathe it who opted out of DA2 because they hated DA1. R00fles!

Not really when most people preorder a titles because it's a follow up to a previous same franchise/series/IP not because it's from a specific developer. When it comes to new IPs even within same developer people aren't sheep they look at the new IP itself before preordering because it has a vastly larger chance it won't be what they want as opposed to second in a series of the same IP.

You're happy about sales dropping like a rock after word-of-mouth got around that it was bad?

"Bad" is an exaggeration. The game's playable, and was entertaining for me. People spreading word of it being "bad" gives an impression that Dragon Age II is a terrible game. It may be lacking, but it's childish to suggest that it downright sucks.

And for those of you who do, you've never played an Atari 2600 game in your life.

Mmmhh, I did! And the C-64. :innocent: DA2 is more than "lacking", in my opinion.

Oh wow, that was truly nice. I love that music, and watching ye olde trailer brought a few tears to  my eyes. I like this music score much better.

Thanks for the link.

On that note Shogun 2 seems to have bucked the trend. PC-only, incredibly niche yet seems to have sold quite well.

Shockingly enough, Shogun 2 is a pretty good game, which explains its exceptionalism in this area.

PROTIP: Try making good games and they will sell, Bioware.

People still going on saying DA2 "sold" 1 million in its first week? Even when bio PR says "moved" 1 million? Big difference between "sold" and "moved"

Heh. Don't forget almost half of that "moved" number were pre-orders, which most of those were because of DA:O.

But yea, word of mouth and even stores telling people not to buy it, is making DA2 sales slide pretty fast.

This must be an awkward place for Bioware to be in. The fanbase is split in saying the game was good and the game was horse****.

Indeed. It will be interesting to see if they decide to make the sequel an actual RPG, or go whole hog and just make it a Devil May Cry clone in Thedas.

They knew the risk. They willingly alienated the former core fanbase and tried to appeal to more people...and in the end, Bioware failed. Fortunately.
