I've noticed this rather recently, when I was looking at the stats screen for my companions. I had just earned +25 Rivalry with Fenris on his recruitment, and right before hand, I had earned +15 or +20 Friendship with Anders. However, when I look at the level-up screen, I realized that they are both still very much neutral with the arrow in the same place as when I first recruited them.
The little mementos at the side of the playing screen still pop up when I earn rivalry/friendship, so I'm wondering if this is just an aesthetic error with the bar itself, or I'm actually not gaining any friendship or rivalry.
