Race isn't really... real. There isn't enough variation in humans for it (despite what Mordin said). Plus races are defined along arbitrary lines and differently depending on where you are in the world. Well, I suppose "race" can be real, depending on how it's defined (it's a pretty loose term) - it can be useful in describing what a person looks like (but it does depend on where you are). Even then it's not always useful e.g. I can't tell you how many times people have assumed I'm Chinese when I'm part South-east Asian part European :/
SO this. A lot of times people assume person's ethnicity based on superficial visual characteristics, when they could have a completely different Y-chromosomal or mitochondrial DNA haplogroup than is typically found in the assigned ethnicity. And regardless, those visual traits are extremely minor from a genetic standpoint, and are all pretty standard genetic responses to environment. Humans actually have remarkably little genetic variation, which is why I was surprised by Mordin's schpiel about human genetic diversity. We're a lot more alike than we are different, that's for sure. All living humans are descended from populations that evolved in Africa over the last 200,000 or so years, and until as recently as 60,000 years ago, all of our ancestors remained in Africa. And we're supposed to think we're all somehow different from each other in any meaningful way? Please.
