I've taken the time to create an ability planner/calculator.
It's available at http://da2abilities.com

Features:
- Interface very similar to in game ability selection screen.
- Save/share your build
- Specify your level and bonus points if applicable
- Hide characters that you're not using

It's a bit rough around the edges, and all feedback will be appreciated.

----
Update: 4/19/2011: Version 1.02 was released, with several bug fixes and support for saving your character to session.

Is this planner better than that one?

Suggestion: Would be nice to see a list of skills you have selected.

Brazen, great idea. Do you think maybe an export feature that lists all of the characters/levels/skills that you've selected would be appropriate? Or do you mean somewhere in the UI?

I'm not sure if mine is better - my pride would say yes but I will leave that up to the community to decide.  I didn't know about the other one until after I had spent so much time on this that I decided it was worth finishing.

An idea - have the tooltip for a skill update with the info of the upgrade when you upgrade the skill- Like in the game.

Both, it makes it easy to use it as an actual reference and make it useful to really share setups with people. It prints well with all skills listed, for instance.

Thing is, now that I see the other one, I'm not sure if it's worth your time, although I'm sure it's a fun excercise!

You've failed to put in the Sword and Shield tree for Warrior Hawke.

swk3000, really appreciate that catch, that's a big one.  I threw up a hotfix but it's out of order.

Oh man, that would be a lot of work.  Definitely on the wish list!

Already put so much time into it, it would be a shame if I didn't follow through.  Also, the other one only supports one character at a time which is a huge limitation, in my opinion.

Slick interface. May I suggest the ability to toggle on/off bonus abilities? For example:

[x] Signature Edition Chest Bonus Items
[x] Feynriel Book Puzzle
[x] Fenyriel 1st Barrel Puzzle
[ ] Feynriel 2nd Barrel Puzzle
[x] Tome of Technique [select quantity]

(just examples. I am aware that some of those listed above give you attribute points, not abilities)

etc. I don't think anyone here completes a play through without taking advantage of at least a few of those.

EDIT:
Oops! The bonus points part totally slipped by me! But it would be nice to have a catalogue of consumables in any case.

But it does show the CCC that you can use with the setup.

Well, if you like doing it, make it the best evah!

Sebastian's missing his personal tree.
Also, setting the level modifier to reflect across all would be nice. Instead of having to readjust the level for each character to be built.

Thanks... Sebastian is one thing I'm aware of.  I haven't recruited him yet (didn't have DLC in my first playthough) so I can't get proper screenshots yet.
I wasn't quite sure how to implement levels in a non-annoying but still flexible way.  Sometimes your party isn't al lthe same level, so I didn't want to force it... but I'm still not sure what's the best.

Umm... Hell, i like both calculators, BUT! There is one lil' annoying thing. Specificly: i can't download neither of them (i want to use it in offline). And that's really bad.

Anyway, you have my thanks: i found your stuff really helpful.

Sorry Blaze,
I was worried about other people taking it for their own, which is not the best feeling when you spend 100+ hours on something :) But, I can tell you for sure that it wouldn't be hard to download if you had a little knowhow... Modifying it would be a bit trickier.
