You act like this is something new. That ship sailed in the previous game before you even made it out of the origin sequences. Shiani's rape, the Couslands murdered, etc. etc. etc. The series has always tried too hard to be dark, gritty & morally ambiguous.

(And in case you didn't know, you don't have to fight the Dalish.)

Pretty much this. They did a few things in DA 2 to make it seem like it was edgier ("Woah! They said balls! That's so cool!" -.-) But a lot of the stuff was already in the last game. Exceptions include increased profanity, Orsino harvester, more crime, and zmombie. Just about every time they swore I was ready to facepalm because they almost always used it in a way that made it feel like an 8 year old saying the f word to make himself look cool.

I believe they were trying too hard. Like a 13 year old kid from the suburbs trying to look "hood",all BioWare accomplished was bad storytelling, false dichotomies, and a button press to awesome.

I'll use DuPuis as an example, you can either Kill him, or let him go, there's no option to work with him, no choice to have him watched. Just Kill and No-Kill. Magistrate's son, Kill or No-Kill. The Dalish, Castillon, Zevran, Anders and almost the entirety of the first act, Kill or No-Kill. Act 2 they even took away one of the options leaving us with Kill. Mages, Templars, Qunari, Mercenaries, doesn't matter, just kill them.

The Blood issue has been talked about ad nauseum so I'll skip it. The only "Dark" and "gritty" things are there for shock value. The Magistrate's son who is crazy, there's no substance or impact, just shock. Franken-Mom, which could have been a very tense, deep moment moment instead got the "shock treatment" because they placed her in a white gown and insinuated her killer intends to have intercourse with her.

I have a hard time with shorthand like "dark and gritty", because it's a large category. I sometimes see "attempt at harsh and unsentimental realism" when I see d&g. Entertainment that telegraphs these themes is more about brand identity than storytelling.

Zombie mom may have meant to be disturbing, but was comically bad. I did like the serial-killer lead up to zombie mom, but the reveal? Silly budget movie.

silly budget movie doesn't even cut it. More like amateur homemade crap. I mean it makes no sense. Hes dead hasn;t the magic that he used to keep her alive (Given you know her heads been cut off and sewn into another body) like gone away no longer sustaining her, its just so silly.

I agree...hated the zombie mom quest. Who the heck thought it was a good idea in any shape or form?

As mentioned before..You can get out of fighting the Dailish simply by taking the blame. Franken-mom wasn't bad..And you don't have to lose all of you family members either. You just won't get the last one back, until after you defeat Orsinio and the final confritation with Meredith.

The fact that we refer to it as franken mom should set alarm bells ringing in bioware at how utterly retarded that decision was. I miss origins :(. as no punctuation stated this seemed more like Dragon Age intermission than dragon age 2.

Tried really hard and didn't quite succeed. Unlike say The Witcher. Trying to figure out how it fell short... I am thinking the presentation of the mature themes is a bit too cartoony at times.

I thought the game was lighter then the original, to be honest.

There's the whole mess of redshirts in the beginning, then you're forced to join a group that you suspect aren't the best of people, then Daveth dies during the joining, then Duncan murder knifes Jory just because the guy doesn't want to be a Warden anymore.

From there the game just gets darker and darker until you hit Orzammar and the whole Branka storyline (which is darker than anything in DA2) and then you meet a Brood Mother.

Then you find out things about the Wardens. You likely can't have kids. The Darkspawn call you towards them. You only have 30 years left to live. And finally, one of you has to die to slay the Archdemon. And the only way to get a happily ever after is with something called the "Dark Ritual" with Morrigan which isn't the nicest sounding name for something wholesome.

Overall, I'd say the first game was darker than the second game. The second game just has a bunch of crazy people.

"Dark Fantasy Epic"

So i'm guessing "Dark and gritty" is the approach there heading towards.

Yeah, I felt like there were moments that DA2 was trying too hard, particularly with the over-the-top bloody combat. (But then again, I thought the blood splashes in the first game were over-the-top, too.)

But really, as other people have pointed out, Dragon Age was always a dark series. I mean, you can sacrifice a mother to a dark blood ritual to save her son from demon possession. DA2 wasn't "darker", it just had a few more missteps with the darker elements.

I think DA2 is one of Bioware's darker games, since Hawke fails at quite a few things. Whereas the Warden doesn't really face a serious setback after the prologue.

It seemed to me like they were trying to make everything "dark and grey and morally ambiguous" when lets face it, alot of it wasn't. Just because something isn't black or white doesn't instantly mean it's dark and gritty. It seemed to me like they were doing things for it being  ambiguous and dark and gritty rather than actually making sense.

There is nothing dark or gritty about ninjas and ninjas who beam down via Star Trek transporters.

Honestly, I think the "dark fantasy" label from Origins was, to me, more appropriate. When you say "dark fantasy" I don't think it's going to be dark, foreboding, ominous...I just think it's going to be more leveled with a sense of realism.

As someone else said, the biggest thing that lessened the "dark fantasy" feel of DA2 from Origins for me was the combat. Splattering enemies into gore puddles with their armor and boots still laying around isn't dark fantasy...it's cartoony. Origins combat felt more properly paced against opponents. DA2 was just masses of enemies being ripped through by an anime hero.
