It seems ridiculous to you, but it's clearly important to her. Merrill understands the dangers involved, and is willing to pay with her life. Anders also assumes that she doesn't understand the risks, but she clarifies this point when she says, "Anders... there's no such thing as a good spirit. There never was. All spirits are dangerous. I understood that. I'm sorry that you didn't."

And yet she continues, putting at risk not just herself but potentially a lot of people around her. It's a bit like saying I know it's dangerous to walk into oncoming traffic but I'll do it anyway. She either doesn't really grasp the danger or is arrogant enough to believe that she can avoid the consequenses if she's tricky enough.

The Dalish treasure the past and mourn the loss of their culture particularly the keepers as it is part of their role to remember. The demon may have already exerted a fair amount of influence on Merrill taking advantage of this desire to steer her down a path she may not have taken if left to her own devices.

It's more like Merrill asked Hawke to kill her several years after working on the Eluvian in case something bad happened when she goes to Sundermount to speak with Audacity. It's no different than the risk the Warden takes when he goes into the Fade to help Connor, or the risk Hawke endures when he goes into the Fade to help Feynriel. Merrill wants to help the Dalish people.

Which would be a valid argument if Merrill didn't ask Hawke to kill her if she lost a battle of wills to Audacity.

Which would be a compelling statement except for the fact that Merrill never became an abomination while Marethari did.

I don't think Merrill understood she wasn't the only one she is putting at risk.

Of course she did. That's why she wanted Hawke to take her down if the demon possessed her.

So didn't she think it would affect Hawke to kill his friend?

Because nobody has ever asked Hawke to do things that might be psychologically damaging?

"You'd be surprised how often people tell me their deepest, darkest secrets.... I must look trustworthy or something"

I'm surprised Hawke hasn't started laughing spontaneously in front of a crowd of people and gone all mass murderer on them.....

yet.
