I never play as a female character, but I have nothing against people who do that in RPGs like DA where the characters actually talk and have romances. Men who choose female characters in MMOs in order to stare at their butts, on the other hand, are just... sad.

I'm going to give it a shot at paraphrasing.  Bioware basically creates their characters based on their market segments.  For the anime watching fanbois there is weird cartoony character (Merril?Fenris?), for those really kinky there is Liara.  Isabela was thrown in because they found that a larger portion of their fans were boob influenced.  This pandering to target audiences is what "Mad Men" is all about.  Zevran was offered up to gays and the unfulfilled housewives. 

Last line is difficult to translate, but seems to have something to do with the move away from the cerebral RPG to the more action adventure style.

You expect to role play an RPG that forced you to being someone else with their predefined character in the first place? You know how some people hate to be forced to being someone else, right? Even professional actors can reject multimillion dollar contract if they feel they don't like the role/character offered to them.

Trust me, you have no idea how much I want to role play male Shepard and Hawke. I've tried. But I can't. The voice, behavior, facial expression,  body language and paraphrase words kick me out of the game and it so damn frustrating.  Until the developers stop forcing predefined characters on players, I would rather watch female ass and nude body than actually role play the character.

I play as both male and female characters. (at certain points its more fun to play as a female character than a male character and vice-versa) The reason i play as both is well, role-playing. i get bored if i only play as 1 gender or use the same choices all the time if i plan to replay the game alot. I've never made one rpg game character that is a reflection of myself, reason: i would not make a very good hero and its more fun to make up different personalities.

note: there has never been a role-playing game i've come across that has given me the options of what i would do in said situation, which is get the hell out of there and let someone else save the world.

B-cuz of camera angle, am usually looking at the back of the main character. Might as well have something nice to look at.

And since it is an RPG I roleplay. I don't go into those type of games wanting to create a digital mini me.

In case  you are really interested I play female characters purely as a roleplaying perspective. In DAO there are certain scene that are different if you are a woman and I wanted to experience them.  However, if I played WOW I wouldnt pretend Im a guy.

I would never play as a female character if I have choices. I feel like cross dressing if I play as female in rpgs. I would cross dress for drama and other stage productions, but not when it is an entertainment I do at home. Also I find it weird to romance other male npcs as a female character when I am not gay. It just breaks immersion for me.

The key to playing a character of opposite sex is not playing "as" the character, but "with" the character. Might hurt "immersion", whatever that is, but i've never been immersed by anything. Except water.

I love playing a chick in Tomb Raider, even in Diablo 2, but when it comes to real RPGs like Dragon Age or Elder Scrolls, I'd rather relate with my character and therefore play a guy. Preferably an Elf (being a skinny dude).

I personally just find it ackward playing as a female character, there is something about it that just makes me feel weird. Though I played as a female character only a few times and will for DA2 for my third playthrough (don't know why i just like it) to see the changes in dialogue and from a different perspective.

I'm not sure if this guy is trolling or genuinely asking, but here goes... I always play as a male on my first playthrough, but if I like the game enough to replay it and I can choose gender I then play as a female to see the different dialogue and interactions. I always name the female character after my wife, and for some reaon she loves that, go figure...
I recently started playing WoW, and made a secondary female character (guess who I named her after...) to try a different class, and It's rather funny to see the difference in treatment. Playing as a male character, most players largely ignore me, and when they don't, it's usually to curse my poor mother's name because of my noobness. As a female, people are actually interested in small talk with me and my mother has yet to be cursed...

What the hell is with all these doods making the same question whenever a new RPG game that allows sex selection is out? The apparent sexual insecurity of some of these doods is alarming.

Should be start worring because some doods like to play games in which the shoot other people (be them terrorists or policemen)? Beat the crap out of some hookers? Break into other people's houses and steal? Etc.

Gamers are sick people indeed.<_<
