I hate to have to say it, but I'm hetero, can someone please explain this thread to me?
Essentially from what I've gathered it's a thread where players who follow the method of self-immersion do not understand the roleplaying style of others who do not just put themselves into a character and prefer a more detached roleplay style. Example: So guys who always play as a human male don't get when another male player chooses a female dwarf, saying they must be gay. This isn't always the case but alot of that seems to be the mentality of what is going on in this thread with one group of players not understanding the other group. While some players who create characters as the opposite gender might be doing fantasy immersion, a combination of self-immersion and detached roleplay, it's certainly not the rule.
As stated earlier in the thread, I belong to more of the school of detached roleplay. I seldom put myself in my characters ether male or female and half the fun is had not through the game but in my own mind, trying to imagine how this person would percieve things and approach situations through dialogue. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it's how I like to roleplay in CRPGs.

What would I be if I played a hypothetical HE-MAN videogame?

Plus if you do any actual role playing of a character (like NWN persistant worlds) Its pretty darned hard to RP a female. Just sayin'

From guys who suddenly start creepily hit on them to more inapropriate innuendos, it's a real mess. No matter how many harrassers we banned, or suspected we kept an eye on, there was always somebody whose idea of DnD rp and socialization was trying to get into somebody elses pants.
It just ruins the fun for those who are genuinely interested in rping.
Not meaning to derail the thread, sorry about that.

I'm a female IRL, and I have often played a male character in an online game specifically to avoid being accused of being a male playing a female.

That's pretty awesome - And I've only once made a female avatar for a MMO, it was an alt. in EVE (ships in space) but it was annoying enough that I had to restart it, and never again.

Perhaps they assume I'm male, or maybe I've avoided a lot of idiots.

All i can say is that i am glad i haven't played any MMO's if that's what it's like.
A lot of people can be stupid.
MMOs are concentrations of a lot of people. Perhaps I've never had many troubles because I tend to be aggressive with my online personas.
I've had a few friends who've been harassed for their real life details by desperate morons.

Me either. I've never hidden the fact that I'm female either. It's kind of unavoidable when I'm leading raids over TeamSpeak or Vent anyway. There's always going to be the odd idiot but the majority of my raiders have been nice and respectful.

I tend to have way too much fun playing a dude in an MMORPG. The men playing women always take advantage of me. And twice how they've told me they're virgins who like watching their brothers have sex because the brothers have giant *****.

I love how some women (and some guys pretending to be) in EVE use the simple fact that they are women to make tons and tons of ISK, it's like the Pandemic Legion "heist" when one of the guys was so taken by a girl in his corp (an actual girl) that he emptied alliance/corp hangars for a ridiculous value and sent it to her - as some sort of token of his affection.
Either way besides some troll/flame convos in 0.0 or lowsec, I mostly found it annoying to be called "she" by some since I wasn't roleplaying in EVE, at least not at the time, and not with that character.
That said the actual women in our corp and alliance were treated well.

The most dominant subject in art is - The Female Form
Why? Because everyone likes the female form, men and women alike.

Females in our league in DCUO have way too many stalkers in game. It's pretty silly/scary.Venefica wrote...
tho sometimes that's a good thing if ppl assume you're a guy playing as a girl in an mmo...I know on occasion when someone would realize I was a girl irl they'd apparently think I had a "cyber me" neon sign on my forehead...either that or assume I was old and fat (but then that's an entirely different topic)

I don't know the ancient Greeks kind of liked the male form.

They appreciated both. There are a lot of examples of Greek goddesses immortalised in stone. Plus, if we go further back into pre-history, it was quite common to find idols of the female form. But these were linked to fertility rituals, rather than them being linked to artistic appreciation.
