I am a very manly man in RL, any male character I could create would be an effeminate sissy compared to meB)

Naaa, seriously though, I just like to play things I can´t do in RL. I can be (and actually am) male all my life. no need to continue it in an RPG.

It seems like I am a minority. I like to play RPG's and play characters that are like me as much as possible. That way I can, in a sense, put myself to situations I could never experience in "real life". I might try some other roles too, but my first playthrough is always a copy of me, if possible.

I used to, back in 95-97, but got tired of it ~ I'm too preachy, shy, soft and kind for my own good, and I've never liked that type of character.

EDIT: And for me it also felt so surreal, as if I would ever do anything of that? Like I was creating a false image of myself, for I'm no warrior ~ Or when I did play myself in Fallout it was a low strength and agility character, with the rest median, with a slight boost in INT (got a decent score on tests for reference). Most games don't allow for character building like in FO1-2, and in games like DA I'd feel that it was such falsehood that even getting a character that could resemble me makes me reroll.

What the hell is with all these dudes playing female characters in a Role Playing Game?

In most games you play as a dude anyway. Diversity is always welcome, you know. Also, RPG doesn't mean you equal yourself to your character. I've played Oblivion as Argonian, but I damn sure I'm no lizard.

Haha, guess we are exact opposites then. Games open a way for me to be... free, in a sense.

I use comics, books, movies, videogames to 'escape' reality.
It's only obvious that I'm not going to play a copy of myself.
And for me asskicking women are more interesting to play.

But of course, main reason is 40 so hours of ass staring.

I like playing with women as they are infinitely more aesthetically pleasing and I can usually pursue a girl on girl relationship, which is awesome obviously, and perhaps more sinisterly I am controlling what she says and does, and not the other way around lol.

Because, as shocking as this may sound, there are people comfortable enough in their sexuality that they aren't intimidated or confused by a female character. Or fending off gay ("Merry?" "No, just happy.") virtual suitors, for that matter.

The real question should be why are you so weirded out by pixletits?

And the good thing about RPGs is - they allow both. Some can experience something they can´t be in Real Life ever (like elf females for me [points at avatar], some can have a totally different approach and still enjoy the game.

DA2 reduced these numbers of possibility, though, which is the main reason for my dislike towards it.

because it's fun to play a character that's not yourself? Besides, I like b*tchy, badass girls in my entertainment. :]

This is actually the character I roll most in cRPGs nowdays - harsh, witty, ****y with no remorse, females.

Also the types of women I'm attracted to most, and I'm soft spoken, kind, stammering and shy ~ and I've never been attracted to any girl that displays the same attirbutes.

So in a sense the character I most often construct today is my ideal girl ~

It's a bit conflicted, and rather comical - but so it goes.

I am a male who generally plays female characters. I don't see what the big deal is - but then, I'm confident of my sexual orientation (heterosexual).

You'd think you'd get jaded by it after decades of playing women in third person games, but you're not.  What can I do?  I love girl asses.

Did you know that masturbating before playing increases your chances of creating a character of the same gender as you by 400%? I think that's enough said on the topic.

90% of statistics are made up. 46% of the people know that.

I agree. In DA2 I wasn't able to be me, nor anyone else. I was forced to watch this guy/gal Hawke run around and do odd jobs for strangers. I didn't even feel any connection to him.

I used to play male characters only till i discovered that it was more fun playing female characters.

It also depends on the game, for ME1 i like playing a male Shepard but for ME2 i played a female Shepard because i thought the male character was rubbish.

I can see your concern in a mmorpg where you might be hitting on wonen and find out they are gus, but in a single player game? Why would you care what other people play? It affects you not even a little.

That said, I play female characters in games like this for the storyline, same reason I play male characters. I want to se how the game reacts differently to different choices.

Im a guy and I love playing female Hawke!

Its so great to see a female take up the lead role!   Its a welcome change to all the other movies/books and games I grown up with which is solely based around males doing the job.  Bioware have done great at making their protagonists do it equally well for both genders. In my opinion she actually does it better then her male counter part.

Of course everyone is free to decide on their own.  But I dont see why its so hard to grasp that guys do love playing female characters.    Do you stop reading a book if the lead character is female? Gaming is in part escapism after all.

I was tempted to play female character in DA2 but then I saw the running animation and I went straight back to male character. Also usually male characters have better looking gear than females

Why this obsession with how other people play? DA and ME aren't even MMORPG's so you can't even interact with other humans sentients people life forms.

I can't peg a particular reason why, but I've played female characters for many games over the years (RPGs and MMORPGs, mostly...esp. Korean MMORPGs lol...gawd. Even if you don't speak, sometimes people just give you free stuff lol).
Tho' I think I've used the 'I'd rather stare at a female's backside for X hours...' reason, methinks it's too shallow.

I guess it depends on the game and the NPCs that characters I make interact with.

My Wardens are all male (except one, but I never really got around to playing as her), but my 2 Hawke's are both female (only time I played DudeHawke was in the demos).
For DA:O, I've pursued romances.
In my one full playthrough of DA2, I didn't: and it's not because of the gender thingy. It's the characters: the only ones I could think of wanting to romance for Hawke (Varric for FemHawke, and Aveline for DudeHawke) weren't options... *shrugs*

Heck, I've even played a female character for a PnP game (tho' one time I tried to pull that off on another GM/DM, he didn't allow me to, and he was cringing all the while at the thought  ).

A roleplaying game is...well, roleplaying, anyway.
I mean, what's gender when compared to the other things one can roleplay as (blood mage, reaver, etc.)?
Granted a guy can't get all the nuances of being a real female 'right', but, one can try. (It could actually be more of a challenge, especially, or particularly, for PnP, when there aren't any set dialogue choices or actions like in CRPGs)   :P
