I agree with you on the part that people that belong to some group and have a constant need of informing others about it are extremely annoying.

My problem with the branding, grouping and categorizing is that it often prevents good discussions from occuring. At least in my country within the circle of people I have met during my short life. People often take things to extremities.

For example, I was branded a heavy metal absolutist and die hard fan when a couple of guys heard I listen to Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth. After that, no matter what I said about music, people usually didn't care, because I was a heavy metal absolutist to them. Even if I denied it, it would still affect the way people reacted to my comments and such. But when another group of people heard that I really like Franz Schuberts version of Ave Maria (no lyrics), I was suddendly an elitist. After that if I commented on anything regarding any form of art or politics, my opinion was disregarded because I was an elitist at heart to them.

Always when you someone is a part of some group in your eyes, it affects the way you think about them or about things related to them. This wouldn't be a problem if the categorizing was justified, but 99% of times it is not. People need to stop categorizing everything, and some people need to stop the seeking of groups so that they can get acceptance. I'm looking at teenagers mostly with the last part, though.

Well there are problems with categories, and belonging to one - but one way to free yourself from them is to use them often, for again you don't have a problem with calling yourself happy I take it? once you use descriptions of other natures as easily and loosely as these, it starts to become a problem to define you - if you try to avoid it too much you might be stamped anyway simply due to how you look or behave.

So try throwing some conflicting descriptions out there, and some false ones even - and start using many that are often seen as branding/harsh more often when people won't mistake you.

or once you are a atheistic liberal progressive footballer gamer nerd metal/jazz/classical/hip-hop hipster patriotic pacifist anti-nationalistic runner worker with a preference for lager, with anything else that fits thrown in, people will start running into problems - or you shouldn't settle by one brand (unless you are a politician or pop-star) and in doing so you are more likely to be free from them.

Also as long as I don't look to belong to one category the risk here in Sweden, or when I lived in Amsterdam to be branded was fairly small.

Anyway nor was I interested in that you were X before, I just reacted to the "I'm not" comment, and not stating it would have been just fine.

"All in all, it comes down to having weak gender identity.  A man that has strong gender identity will not play as a woman if given the choice, and will probably feel strange doing so......" - that has to be least cogent thing I've yet read here.... and that's saying something.

An insecure man (there are a lot of those) could only pick a female character out of a wish to objectify the PC, however. So even the 'real men play with--- sorry, as men!' reasoning doesn't make any sense. Personally, I've RP'd characters of both sexual orientations, from both sides of the gender fence.

Angry One? Good point, never thought about it that way!

Nothing wrong with shopping now. Though if the stereotype is true I have to wonder why 90% of JRPG mains and a lot of CRPG mains are male.
Think about it - what's the first thing you do in a lot of RPGs when you reach a new town or progress along the plot? Shopping spree! Check those new swords, nuclear death cannons and shoes!

That's not shopping. It's man-building. You are reinforcing your manliness-level so you can kick some alien ass and **** two lesbian ****es.

Edit: (or to do something of the equivalent man-value)

Oh is that what you tell yourself while you run around the new town's mall with a shopping cart full of fashion accessories, gifts and jewelry.

in most JRPGs the only way to tell that a character is male is by the descrition and the name, so they are already gender bending rather freely  ~

And I think it's more about the OCD personalities, the shopping in cRPGs that is.

What's with fantasy's fascination with antagonizing spiders? Real spiders are so peaceful. Hell they don't even hunt their prey, just let trespassers be tangled up. Not as scary as an oldman with a shotgun yelling "GIDOFF MA LAWN" and seriously has anyone ever been bitten by a spider?

Same with wolves - and rats? I've seen rats in real life, and never ever have they even tried attacking me.

Aren't men more prone to collection/packrat like behaviour in general?

We seem to be at least as bad as women when it comes to colleting stuff, and I know of more extreme male collectors than women packrats (even if I know of several women that do as well, like my grandmother).

A man needs his bling. Although even without my bling, my man-level would be high enough for me to keep slapping ****es and rollin' on with my pimpin' ways. I however like to keep the bling on in case i need to pull off the dreaded lesbian triangle sandwich- stunt when someone questions my man- level.

And anyways, I send my ho's to do my man-building for me.

Actually, now that I think about it, DA2 should have let you collect the expedition money by pimpin' Isabela. That would have increased DA2's score by a LOT.

You could buy pimp clothes and walk down the Kirkwall streets with Isabela in a leash. Yeah.
Dat's my champ.

Sadly true, goes for games as well to a large extent - even games like Metroid are now getting ruined (with metroid M).

You know when even Yahtzee who makes a living out of being a misogynist troll thinks your game is too damn sexist, you've gone too far. :P

Oh, Yahtzee has no problem with well written female characters. He also got quite. . . well, lets call it upset about how badly they messed up the character of Mina Murray in the movie version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

In DAO I played with a male character and I would probably choose male in DA2 but the ingame Hawke doesn't look near as the one in promotional movies. He's... older. Female version just seemed a better choice.

Anyway it depends. A huge role, at least for me, have the art/graphic design. I choose one or other based on that.

That's why I say misogynist troll, he goes on about how games are for manly men and how if you're not totally manly all the time then YOU ARE A GIRL and girls are weak and dumb and stuff!
It's in-character attention seeking, and even I can laugh at his "all women are evil" tirade in his Sims 3 review (though he'd still get the boot).
Point is even reviewing as his in-character self, he'll still call Other M for what it is. A game where a badass female hero is turned into a simpering, needy child who needs big strong men to protect her and follows the orders of the hunky guy EVEN IF IT MEANS HER OWN DEATH. Yikes.

It's just such a horrible game - I don't understand how anyone could see it fit for release, talk about damaging the franchise.

And just on principle, why ruin such a character as Samus? on of the pioneer women in games, one that wasn't overly female, didn't have to show her breasts or act up as the sterotypical roles women get in games ~ even if Metroid would never make any more money for Nintendo, the amount of goodwill the character made, before the failure that Other M was, should have been enough for them to be content.

And then they hand the show over to Team Ninja?

Obviously anyone who doesn't like Yahtzee has either a low man-level or has sand in her vagina.

Wrong. It's social commentary on how ho's return to their pimps even if they have to go through fire and flames.

Played it. Was never quite sure whether it was trying to be ultra-feminist or super fanservice for males.
Then again everyone in that world wears ridiculous sexualising clothes, male or female.

I don't get what's so weird about playing a different gender. =/ In a lot of games - though the trend is changing - women had to play male characters because there wasn't a female option for most (I'm not really talking about standard RPG here, mind you. More survival horror, shooter and action games).

Who is that? This was the Tidus in my game. Might have been the difference between the region, though.

Yeah, "Team Ninja" really sums up what is wrong with Other M in just two words. I liked the Metroid games, but when I heard that the devs of the Dead or Alive series and, what was that other game again? Oh yeah: Dead or Alive Xtreme-f***ing-Beach Volleyball were responsible. . . I mean, at least I knew what I was in for. Imagine you liked the movie Thelma & Louise, and then you hear that they are making a sequel that is written and directed by Hugh Hefner.
. . . Actually, that sounds kinda awesome. I think I would watch that movie.

Say what you like about Retro Studios, but they *got* Samus.
Like the pirate transcripts you get in Metroid Prime. It didn't matter that Samus was male or female, she was a badass in power armour who was coming to ruin their **** and they all knew it. That was all she needed to be.
Some people whined that Samus wasn't "complex". So what?

Also, you know who did Samus' grunts, gasps, etc. in Metroid Prime 3? Jennifer Hale, that's who. More acting in those grunts than the drone who voiced her in Other M did in mountains of pointless, nonsensical dialog.

Why wouldn't men want to start playing female characters?

Male protagonists in video games have been distilled over and over until it's at the point where, basically, they've all become the same Action McCoolGuy. Nearly any sort of action game with a male main character can have most of its characterization predicted before even firing up the game. Heck, the biggest difference between them is whether or not they're in it for the vengeance or protecting something they own.

Female protagonists by comparison have hardly been touched and have a lot of room to grow. A different perspective is sometimes rewarding enough.
