I agree with you on the part that people that belong to some group and have a constant need of informing others about it are extremely annoying.
My problem with the branding, grouping and categorizing is that it often prevents good discussions from occuring. At least in my country within the circle of people I have met during my short life. People often take things to extremities.
For example, I was branded a heavy metal absolutist and die hard fan when a couple of guys heard I listen to Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth. After that, no matter what I said about music, people usually didn't care, because I was a heavy metal absolutist to them. Even if I denied it, it would still affect the way people reacted to my comments and such. But when another group of people heard that I really like Franz Schuberts version of Ave Maria (no lyrics), I was suddendly an elitist. After that if I commented on anything regarding any form of art or politics, my opinion was disregarded because I was an elitist at heart to them.
Always when you someone is a part of some group in your eyes, it affects the way you think about them or about things related to them. This wouldn't be a problem if the categorizing was justified, but 99% of times it is not. People need to stop categorizing everything, and some people need to stop the seeking of groups so that they can get acceptance. I'm looking at teenagers mostly with the last part, though.
Well there are problems with categories, and belonging to one - but one way to free yourself from them is to use them often, for again you don't have a problem with calling yourself happy I take it? once you use descriptions of other natures as easily and loosely as these, it starts to become a problem to define you - if you try to avoid it too much you might be stamped anyway simply due to how you look or behave.
So try throwing some conflicting descriptions out there, and some false ones even - and start using many that are often seen as branding/harsh more often when people won't mistake you.
or once you are a atheistic liberal progressive footballer gamer nerd metal/jazz/classical/hip-hop hipster patriotic pacifist anti-nationalistic runner worker with a preference for lager, with anything else that fits thrown in, people will start running into problems - or you shouldn't settle by one brand (unless you are a politician or pop-star) and in doing so you are more likely to be free from them.
Also as long as I don't look to belong to one category the risk here in Sweden, or when I lived in Amsterdam to be branded was fairly small.
Anyway nor was I interested in that you were X before, I just reacted to the "I'm not" comment, and not stating it would have been just fine.
