Why wouldn't men want to start playing female characters?
Male protagonists in video games have been distilled over and over until it's at the point where, basically, they've all become the same Action McCoolGuy. Nearly any sort of action game with a male main character can have most of its characterization predicted before even firing up the game. Heck, the biggest difference between them is whether or not they're in it for the vengeance or protecting something they own.
Female protagonists by comparison have hardly been touched and have a lot of room to grow. A different perspective is sometimes rewarding enough.
Honestly, a huge part of the reason why I prefer a female PC is that I'm sick and tired of the stereotypical male lead character. It differs from game to game, in the ME series it's because I'm quite emotional myself, and the VA for femshep happens to be more emotional then the rather plain and austere performance of her male counterpart. So, of course, I can relate to the female voice better. Gender is only one part (and not even an important) of the reasons why I can or can't relate to another person.
That said, yes, it's a slighty different perspective that is somewhat refreshing after xxx games with a male protagonist - but only ever so slightly. When talking about a BioWare game, it's still the very same game, the same decisions, the same characterization with very little (if any, besides perhaps the choice of your LI) difference regardless of the gender of your PC. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
