Role playing is about escapism and wish fulfillment. You are after all, adopting the role of the character in question: Attitude, gender, desires, etc...

If part of someones escapist fantasies and wish fulfillment is being a woman, more power to them.

Is it so hard to fathom that someone who lacks this desire is NOT a homophobe, a masoginist or is threatened by female characters?

It's about immersion and what a player most strongly identifies with.

Also, I think it is a tragedy that female gamers have been forced to play male character for as long as they have.

Lately, more games have remedied this glaring problem, which is a good thing

Imagining very few think life would be better as an elf (I have no numbers on this... consider it a woman's intuition? ;D), I wonder why we get so much whine about missing origin stories. As you can see, people do not always play to put themselves into the game. I have male characters even though I'm female irl, and I doubt I'd always make female characters first if it wasn't for the simple fact 99% of the games I play have a male protagonist with no choice about it - playing as a woman still feels exotic and awesome, even though it by no means should.

I like Jo Wyatt's performance. Boulton has been forever tainted as Vaughann in my mind. Although playing Vaughan Hawke and rivalmancing Merrill is oddly appealing, if only for the squeaky factor.

I don't see any other explanation as to why a guy would rather play as a women instead of a man first if everything is exactly the same no matter what gender (which you could say is the case for DA2).

Tempting... but no. Sex change doesn't really sound appealing to me, I think I will stay with vidja games.

How so? It's very literal logic. And used entirely for the purposes of the joke. Perhaps that's where you're falling down on it. Just take it less seriously and you'll be fine.
