When I play choice-based RPGs, I'm a writer/director, directing the plot and action to produce the story I want to tell, within the boundaries imposed upon me by the devs.

The gender of my lead protagonist has no relation whatsoever to me. I don't self-insert, and I don't roleplay -as- a woman. FemShep and DudeShep both follow my directorial direction, same as any other actors.

I do what Raphael does on the second and subsequent playthroughs. On the first playthrough I construct a character who is as much like me as the game's setup will allow; this simplifies my thought processes a lot.

I don't necessarily role-play but for some reason I like to play aggressive, blunt women like with my female shephard and female champion. The female shephard voice actress also does a great job with all of the aggressive dialogue. When I play as a guy, I tend to be more friendly and compassionate with the dialogue choices.

That's interesting, because when I play as a guy, I let myself be more aggressive and nasty. It might give a person the emotional distance to try on a new persona.

I follow the pattern of sparkkedup, and it's the reasons I don't like to play male characters as much, esp. in 3rd person perspective or first-person perspective games - as I have problems seperating myself from the character and since I actually want to roleplay it gets annoying that characters that get similar to me hampers my ability to do so and still enjoy it (it simply feels wrong to go against my normal mannerism when I play a guy, esp. if blond and/or got other similarties with me). This is something I suffer less from when my PC is female as the dissonance is greater.

For the same reasons do I also have an easier time roleplaying dark haired characters, elves, dwarves, half-elves and so on  (since I being human and blond).

For example I find a male PC in Saint's Row 2 hampers my enjoyment of the game, as the moral decisions of the character (which I can't decide) makes me uncomfortable, esp. again if the character reminds me of me in other ways visually or in sound, while a female PC doesn't create this sense of uncomfort as often within the game.

And one could be all Freudian and claim that it betrays my view on females, but then I would hold the same view about people with dark hair or voices dissimilar to mine.

EDIT: So in games were there is no roleplaying involved and were your PCs choices as you go through the game coincides with mine I actually prefer to play a character that reminds me of myself visually, but in games were the character is dissimilar to myself in mannerism and ethics/morals I prefer to play something completely different from myself.

I totally agree about the emotional distance to play a new persona. It is fun. And personally I just like seeing stronger female characters who are rough and tough. I don't know... I just like to feel like I'm giving them(my female characters) that opportunity to be that way because they don't get to be protrayed like that enough of the time. I absolutely love Aveline in this game. She makes up for Mhairi's death in Awakening.

While it is fun to play other characters I do however prefer playing myself and will always create a character that is as similar to me as possible when given the chance. I like immersing myself in that character whether they look like me or not. I make them me. And having the bi-options in DA2 make me so happy! If i can romance a guy with my male character I will.

In addition to playing "stronger" females I have a tendency to make everyone I play gay or at least bi, guy or girl. My female warden from DA:O started off with Alistair but ended up with Leliana, well after she boinked Zevran. With DA:O 2 I was upset I couldn't romance Sebastian as a guy so I created a female hawke to do so but I'm starting to lean towards Isabela. lol I just feel like she fits better with my female Hawke.

btw I <3 Saint Row 2 it's super fun! I can't wait for number 3 to come out!

I pick my first character by heads or tails then I rotate on each playthrough. Is the OP not sure about his sexuality? Is he afraid to play from a woman's perspective?

Saints Row is so bad..

Mostly for the F/F romance but also because there is no point in role playing as a person I am in real life. That's why it's called Role-playing because you're playing as someone you aren't.

What the hell is with all these dudes playing female characters in a Role Playing Game?

Answers is sooo simple - it is a game - i am playing it get out of everyday life boredom - im slaying dragons, bashing mobs, being evil .... whatever goes on

Im playing Fem char in RPG  to try "other" side of coin in game.

And before you say "go make yourself trans".
Nope it doesnt work like that. In game im doing things i wouldnt do in real life even if i could - like killing peoples,  kicking puppies, ****** on fallen enemies (Postal 2) ... Image IPB hehe

Pretty much what he said.  Also I usually play a guy character and do what I would normally do as myself in my first playthough and see how the games characters react to me.  Then I start up a new game if I liked the game enough and go as a female character and make decisions that are mostly out of character for me.  My female characters usually end up being the ones setting off nukes in post-apocolytic towns and killing off a species of aliens for good.

Because that's their personal preference? To each their own, you know. I'm a female and I, for instance, always play exclusively female mages, and never evil ones either. Think that sounds boring, monotone, whatever? Well, that's my personal idea of fun. I simply can't identify with male characters, I find the mage class far more entertaining than other classes and the idea of wielding supernatural powers is just very appealing to me. I don't really 'roleplay' my characters as such either, I always 'play as myself'.

Eh...
Ehm. Huhm.
No, I can't stop myself.

WELL, judging by the huge amount of "NO HOMOSEXUALITY " threads/posts, one could claim that this is not the case! (Or at least that men are unwilling to suck.)

(That was bad.  I'm so very sorry.)

Well at least now we have people trolling on both sides of the coin ~  but yeah ishmaeltheforsaken such an obvious troll and it's best just to drop it.

So don't give a toss about posts like that and you, and everyone else, will be better for it.

Technically...
Recent studies show that the differences between men and women are neglectable. Differences between individual women are far more important than those between men and women.
Most of the perceived "differences" tend to be based on social stereotypes/prejudice/peer pressure/etc.
