There is something about a man playing a female character that is the equivalent to dressing up in female clothes. You just don't do it. Its creepy when men, even for Halloween, wear female clothes. The same thing here.

I don't see why a man needs to go off and play a girl character. Unless he has some identity issues.

This is of course my opinion.

I would respectfully suggest that this is because, consciously or unconsciously, you feel it would be somehow demeaning for you to be a woman - that if you were female, you would be 'lesser' than you are now as a male.  And that is an attitude that you should examine and challenge for yourself, and an attitude that is why feminism remains relevant today, frankly.

As has been stated by other female gamers on this thread, we have had to immerse ourselves with male avatars for a long time, and we've managed it.  So maybe guys who can't handle even the thought of playing as a female need to...well...man up. ;)

I'll have to see if I can find a link to a blog I read awhile back, about a game which was intended to have a female protagonist, but the company was bought out by Activision and word came from Kotick that under no circumstances could the PC be female, because female toons = less sales.  I thought men were supposed to be strong and rational, and women were the insecure ones?

Because it is better. Anyone I know who plays female characters for a while doesn't switch back to males.

I am sorry for all the people who are afraid to play female characters because they fear their penis could fall off.

I remember a game being announced a few years ago with a fixed female lead. Alot of the first page of comments was people saying they wouldn't play it because they had to be a woman. How the heck they think female gamers get on, I have no idea..

No idea where that came from, but there's a list of memorable games with female leads that sold very well, and surely not only to female gamers, if at all. The obvious start would be Tomb Raider (although I'd even go back to Giana Sisters) , and back in the days I played various games like No One Lives Forever, Oni, or to throw in one of the more ridiculous and male-fantasy titles, "Heavy Metal FAKK" that were surely not made for girl gamers only. Recently I played Venetica, another RPG with a female lead, sadly it fails for other reasons than the adorable protagonist. Someone who can't live with the idea of a male playing a female char must have issues anyway, but especially after a long time of games featuring female leads I really don't get it.

One of my favorites is Metroid, since before Metroid M (horrible game) it was never made a thing, it was just a woman doing what all the men were doing (and then Metroid M came, and it should be purged from the lore of Metroid forever).

Neither do I to be honest. I know that some people just can't enjoy playing as the other gender though, and I respect that. All the more reason to include a choice, I say.

I am a male and in games with somewhat in depth character creation, I like to make the hero resemble myself as much as possible (though maybe the 25 year old version of me rather than the 32....heh heh). This is not for reasons of conceit; it  just makes the game more immersive for me when my character resembles me (such as my first two Wardens and my first Hawke (and second to a degree).  On a different note, I wish they gave us some better choices in long sideburn; the chops in D.A. 2 look pretty silly (mine are long but NOT like that)...sorry, I digress.

Having said that, if I can't customize my characters appearance and I have to choose between a hulking bald dude with a biker mustache that does not resemble me at all  or a sexy woman (Torchlight comes to mind), I'd rather look at the female through out the game.  But like I said, I prefer to play as a male since I AM a male and can thus relate better to a male hero.  That's my two cents on the matter.  Peace. Well, inferring from your post, you never play female characters, why not?

and only people who are dwarves or elves in real life should play those races, right? and only people who are grey wardens in real life should play Origins, or Champions in real life should play DA2. I really hope NASA accept my application so that you'll give me permission to play Mass Effect

in seriousness though, people play how they want to play, not necersarily how they are in real life. personally I tend to play games in as many various ways as possible. in Origins I've had male and female Wardens of all races and origins doing good, evil, selfish, selfless and silly things. yet in real life I'm not some kind of dual-gendered hybrid race with severe multiple personality disorder

With non-voiced protagonists I don't mind the gender. With voiced ones I've preferred the female VAs so far at least.
In regards to mmos I started out trying a male at first but he kept looking like a dork, so I stuck with a female who looked a lot better. =/

QFT.

Though I would respectfully suggest that I doubt this point will be heard in this particular conversation. Ah well - an excellent point nonetheless.

they like seeing pixelated chicks. that would be my guess. To be honest I could never see myself playing as a women because I am not one. Nor do I have any desire to be.

I equally enjoy playing boys or girls. It's just a character I impersonate, it's not me. I haven't been able to roleplay as a gay dude however. I've tried but it feels too... Umm... Yes. Just can't.

I'm in the I'd rather look at a female butt than a male one camp. Also lesbian sex is something I only get to do in games being a bloke. Having been a PnP DM being a female character is not really a big deal.

Sometimes though it's just that the female characters suit my play style more, being quicker and more agile.
Other times they just have an interesting skill set like this one.

In WoW my solo characters are female, but my group characters are always male.

Me neither, yet i only play with female characters. But that's the difference, i play "with" the characters, not "as" the characters. Maybe that is also the reason why "Hawke" was easier to me swallow than some other people?

Well I play as a male for one because I am a male. And two because it's easier to relate and roleplay because I'm a male Image IPB. Also I don't have a problem if that's your reason for playing a female but those who play because they like looking at pixelated chicks are odd to me (trying to be nice).

So I apologize in advance.

But basically you're a hypocrite.

I usually play as a female character once or twice just to get a different experience. I assume most women usually do at least 1 male playthrough. Nothing "wrong" with that, it's just a game.

With a female char you can knock out Isabela without feeling guilty.

There have been girls in FF's before. For a short time Cecile is the lead in FFVI. But in FFX-2 the party for the game was 3 girls and the combat system revovled around changing their outfits "magical girl" style. It's just another way of doing the job system but a lot of people complained about it.

Dudes making threads with the title "Dudes playing Female Characters" in every single MMO/RPH forum on the net... what is on their minds?
Why do they care?
Are they so worried about their own sexuality that this becomes a major source of concern?

Enough said!

Dudes post these kinds of threads everytime they are having a crush on female PC in a MMORPG and find out it's a dude. Nerdrage.

The best argument I have ever heard for it is: " Why is it strange that I want to watch a female's ass for 40 hours of gameplay, and not a male's ass?".

This is so true!

I don't recall ever rolling a female character in my pen and paper RPG days; however, when DMing of course, I would act out the parts of all the NPCs.

Since I started playing video game RPGs a few years ago, I usually go with a female PC if one is available. Especially when she is as stunning as the default FemHawke character design.
