There is something about a man playing a female character that is the equivalent to dressing up in female clothes. You just don't do it. Its creepy when men, even for Halloween, wear female clothes. The same thing here.
I don't see why a man needs to go off and play a girl character. Unless he has some identity issues.
This is of course my opinion.
I would respectfully suggest that this is because, consciously or unconsciously, you feel it would be somehow demeaning for you to be a woman - that if you were female, you would be 'lesser' than you are now as a male. And that is an attitude that you should examine and challenge for yourself, and an attitude that is why feminism remains relevant today, frankly.
As has been stated by other female gamers on this thread, we have had to immerse ourselves with male avatars for a long time, and we've managed it. So maybe guys who can't handle even the thought of playing as a female need to...well...man up.
I'll have to see if I can find a link to a blog I read awhile back, about a game which was intended to have a female protagonist, but the company was bought out by Activision and word came from Kotick that under no circumstances could the PC be female, because female toons = less sales. I thought men were supposed to be strong and rational, and women were the insecure ones?
