Ah you must be a pinko gay transvestite liberal then, I know this because I saw it on Fox.

I'm suprised you have time for television, what with all the de-sensitised murder caused by playing computer games. I can barely fit it all into my schedule.

I tend to play female characters when available, it doesn't bother me when they're not. I'm not gay and I don't wear the wifes clothes. It makes a refreshing change from all the macho BS in a lot of games.

Really? Can you let me know what I'm confused about, then? I tend to play female characters more than male and I'd be real interested in clearing up any confusion I may have. I'm sure my wife and kids would appreciate it as well.

Crap. I knew I shouldn't haev allowed them to interview me...

Doesn't gender confusion usually happen when you're a kid or teen? So I guess a kid (boy) plays a game and selects the female character, then he thinks that it's normal to dress like a female, and thinks he's a female. Leading to gender confusion.

I mean several people have said in the forums that they have had kids play DA2 even if it's rated M. I think it makes sense that this happens.

A persons gender, sexuality or whatever is not going to be influenced by a video game. Honestly things are lot more complicated than that. When I play Mario Kart I tend to choose toad, that doesn't mean deep down I want to be a mushroom.

To be honest I could never see myself playing as a women because I am not one. Nor do I have any desire to be.

Me neither, yet i only play with female characters. But that's the difference, i play "with" the characters, not "as" the characters. Maybe that is also the reason why "Hawke" was easier to me swallow than some other people?

Well I play as a male for one because I am a male. And two because it's easier to relate and roleplay because I'm a male Image IPB. Also I don't have a problem if that's your reason for playing a female but those who play because they like looking at pixelated chicks are odd to me (trying to be nice).

Well, everybody is crazy if you look close enough :D

I still don't understand why it's weird to find videogame characters attracting. After all, in the case of DA2, the characters are made to look exactly like real humans. I'd prefer Liara over Hawke though, but that's just my xenophilia talking

It's not exactly weird maybe just perverted if you play as a women because the female version is hot. Also
finding video game characters attractive isn't a problem. It gets to be a problem when people start worshipping a video game character and wants to marry them, etc.

That's a silly analogy. You can't be a toad. Fox News has done studies on all this stuff. So it's scientifically proven that it has an affect on kids.

Well if you’re playing Mass Effect, experiencing the awesomeness of female Shepherd is pretty much mandatory.

I don't know. It was a study done on Fox News, about cross dressing gamers. They were able to prove that male gamers who played as women instead of men were more likely to either dress up in women's clothing or have done so in the past.

Judging by how many guys here admit to playing as women, it shouldn't take long to find the guy you're looking for.

I'd love to see the study paper on that! Got a linky for me? Or if you know the academic journal it was published it and the names of the researchers, I can look it up myself. For checking references, you see. Always gotta check your references when discussing these things.

And yeah, there's a lot of guys playing as females here, but they don't wear dresses, judging by the comments.:crying: For shame.

I'm going to say this as slowly and deliberately as I can, to try and mask my intense frustration with thinking like this:

Fox news does not 'scientifically' do anything, let alone prove. They take an idea, look for people that match it and present them as examples of a much wider phenomina. There's no rigor to any of their so called studies, or consideration of wider causes. They see variable X happening at the same time as variable Y and declare that the two are related.

Expanding your sample size until you find something that fits your hypothesis whilst completely ignoring anything to the contrary is not scientific proof.

The analogy only sounds silly because it's making exactly the same ridiculous assertion you are. You really need to turn Fox News off, from what I've seen of it here via satellite it belongs with the comedy channels.

Hey, don't judge before you got the study paper on your screen. I mean, if it's a proper scientific study there should be a peer-reviewed publication available and just waiting to be linked here by Shirosaki.

Guy that plays girls here. It's pretty much an even split between male and female characters in almost any game I play where there's the option. Heck, I do the romances in DA as a female with the male companions and when I play males I do the romances with the female companions.

In a game like DA what motivates me to play a female character is mainly to see different scenarios and interactions between the characters. I can't play m/m (or f/f for that matter) so if I want to see the bits of dialogue with Anders or Fenris I would have to do it with a fem character.

In an MMO, what gender I play is entirely determined by what I think looks cool which really boils down to what looks best in the armor of my chosen class and has the best animations.

Unless it's a sandbox type of game like M&B, Elder Scrolls, or Fallout I have difficulty perceiving the characters I play as extensions of myself. When I can, like in the games I just mentioned, then I play male characters and have maybe 1 female character.

P.S. there is no such study by Fox News. He's trolling and people are using it to reinforce their views about FNC. When those views can be swayed so easily by stuff people make up I wonder how informed they are to begin with.

You could ask why do female gamers play as a male (as in The Witcher)

Answer: because there is no option to play as a female.

In most games you can play as a male or female...which is how it should be.
And there is nothing wrong in a male playing as a female...the same as there is nothing wrong in a female playing as a male.

Answer:  because I liked the white haired, brooding male they served up to me

Never did associate anything wrong about it, but this hasn't stopped me from wondering why I choose to role play the opposite sex.  Doubt seriously that it is because I enjoy looking at some pixelized male ass, so that idea doesn't fly.  Probably, it's just a bit of mental laziness.  On rare occasions that I play a warrior I like to construct a "Boromir" type character, good but flawed.  Rogues for me either get fitted into an Erol Flynn mode or a shadow seaking Garret.  Mages are typically Gandalf oriented, wizened with age.  When it came to selecting for Mass Effect, it boiled down to either Captain Kirk or Janeway.  Could have gone with either, but did choose Jim.  So, I guess my decision is heavily influenced by exisiting role models, which in turn have predominantly been male.

I play both. The gender I prefer depends on the game.
In DAO I just couldn't seem to get into the game as a male character but in Mass Effect1/2, dudeShep is my canon.

In most games that give the option to play both genders, I usually have a main character of both sexes anyway.

Maybe so, in my case there's more to it than that, but default Lady Hawke in champion armor definetly does please my eyes more :o And my ears too ;)

I've seen that argument used many times in these forums, so i guess i jumped to conclusions. And i think that second part only happens in some asian countries

I'll not hold my breath. Seemingly half the stuff they come out with is just plain made up, and that's giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Personally I play both. For DA2 I played femhawke first because I saw a lot of people saying how awesome sarky femhawke was. I don't think it really says much about a person and some people just prefer playing something different.
and on a side-note: this thread really has gotten off-topic, so off-topic I wouldn't be surprised to see a picture of mangiraffedog:ph34r:(not that I'm encouraging it or anything)

well at least you have a better excuse then one of my friends. He played as a chick in Fallout 3 because the hair for males was garbage Image IPB. I would consider playing a female if there were obvious differences between a male and female character (story and gameplay wise). But if it's exactly the same I just go with my own gender.

There's also the rumour that TV rots the brain. Clearly that must be true too. Look at the effect it had on you. Image IPB

Oh my, you'd be surprised.

Anyway, it's a shame you cannot produce references to support your claims. That kind of cuts the discussion before it can begin. You can't talk about these things as facts without providing evidence others can look at to reach their own conclusions.

You can send any drag-gamers you come across my way, however.

Yes they would, and yes they do. Frequently. I'm unsure how to be clearer about it.

Suddenly I had an alarming thought... could Shirosaki actually be serious?
