I don't know. It was a study done on Fox News, about cross dressing gamers. They were able to prove that male gamers who played as women instead of men were more likely to either dress up in women's clothing or have done so in the past.

Judging by how many guys here admit to playing as women, it shouldn't take long to find the guy you're looking for.

I'd love to see the study paper on that! Got a linky for me? Or if you know the academic journal it was published it and the names of the researchers, I can look it up myself. For checking references, you see. Always gotta check your references when discussing these things.

Unfortunately, I saw it on TV. So I don't have a link or names of the researchers. But Fox News is a respectable news outlet and they wouldn't lie to their viewers unlike other media outlets.

Here you go... Thought this might help you.

Fox News the most reliable and open source on TV.

Hey, a guy wrote Femhawke! Shirosaki, would you like to inform him that he is gender dubious?

Oh my, you'd be surprised.

Anyway, it's a shame you cannot produce references to support your claims. That kind of cuts the discussion before it can begin. You can't talk about these things as facts without providing evidence others can look at to reach their own conclusions.

You can send any drag-gamers you come across my way, however.

I can't produce a link to a murder that was on the local news. That doesn't mean it isn't true. If it's on the news then it has to be true.

There's a difference between writing women and roleplaying as one.

I had the thought, as well. Judging by past experiences what seems like fun Fox-trololol banter may end up being very serious business at the other end of the internets.

Anyway, I saw The Witcher being mentioned. That's a game where I wish there was a female option and despite really wanting to finish the game... I feel hard-pressed to do so. I simply find the guy I'm supposed to "be" repulsive to look at. So no go drag king gaming for me in The Witcher.

What the hell is with all these dudes playing female characters in a Role Playing Game?

Its not a new revelation. Everyone's first female character is Samus Aran from Metroid. Since that point in time, males and females have been playing a variety of opposite gender characters.

It's not the same for females who choose to play as males. It's a well known fact women have penis envy and it's pretty normal.

I should clarify a misconception. This study was done on male gamers who had a choice between male or female. If the main character is female and you have no choice but to play as her, then it doesn't apply to you. However, if you have the option to choose a male and you choose a female then it is more likely you enjoy dressing up as a woman or have done so in the past.

That's very contradictory.

Why would straight males choose to play Tomb Raider in your world? Or Perfect Dark? You're not making any sense. Nobody forced them to buy the game. By your very definition, they chose to play Tomb Raider or Metroid or Perfect Dark because they are gender confused and like dressing up as girls.

*laughing* @  the wind up (surely no-one believes Fox , not even Americans are that stupid, no?  Shirosaki17 is really playing it straight tho *grin* )

Anyway, I am female and for the first time in 3 or so years I am playing a guy in DA : O . In games I usually end up feeling the PC was written to be a guy, but I thought Origins in some sense actually tried to address the female gamer. Unfortunately, I havent really seen much difference between guy and girl now I actually played it.

I will more often play my own gender cos in MP I like that I can be me, or a woman unlike me, in such a situation. I think if I try to play a guy I get parodic and a bit silly, but I guess that's my failure in RP. I seriously cannot see anything worng with it tho.

IF the game has decently written female convo, then a guy might learn something, no? Girls have had to play as males with a female avatar for years no?  :P When game companies start employing more female writers for RPGs perhaps even the OP might see the point *cheeky grin*

Not quite perfect -- he was doing brilliantly until he got onto that Fox News business, but since then he's made the trolling too obvious.

Hey I didn't do the study. It wouldn't be much of a study if there wasn't a choice between male and female in the games they were using for research.

Except the study is the backup for YOUR opinion. I assume you chose not to answer because you are running into an infinite loop convulsion in your brain?

The study is fact. I made a statement that is supported by this study. There is no opinion. There is only denial from people who refuse to admit they like to dress up as women, or use to put mommy's clothes on when a kid.

This thread is almost as good as the motivational thread.
I'm 50 years old and thought I'd seen it all, seriously I thought the human race had gotten past the gender issue, I could not have been more wrong, but I do get the sense that most of the issues are coming from very young folk.
The most interesting thing in this thread though are the ones defending their position to role play the opposite gender, why do you feel the need to defend it?
Here's my defense, I play the opposite gender because I can.

I like playing a game where you can have your female PC running around in their underwear.
So, I'm a dirty old man, so sue me.

Same here.  I don't have any hidden gender issues, in truth it's really just me being more of a completionist than anything else.

I mean it's called Role Playing for a reason.  It really shouldn't make any difference what gender I choose, especially when one considers that even the male character will be doing things I'll never do.

In fact I wanted my Fem-Hawke to be taller and more physically fit than the one provided in the game.

Many people play RPG's because they want to play a role that isn't their own. Don't see a problem with it. For me, personally, playing a female character in RPG's can be hard.

You watch male asses? I was just bi-curious, not.

I should point out that we're all just taking your word for it that this study exists.

Though actually, it'd be kind of shocking if a study found anything else. In a population of gamers, there's going to be a few transvestites. There will also be a few players who won't play as a different sex from their own. The overlap between the two groups is probably very small, though I suppose it might be zero. Since fewer of the people in the group that won't play as another sex in the game will paly as another sex in RL, of course there will be more transvestites in the other group.

Which proves... not a damn thing, really. Except that Shirosaki is either trolling, stupid, or gullible.
