Ever since installing the 1.02 patch I have noticed stuttering during combat.

I am replaying as a mage (I completed the game twice as a mage using version 1.01), and have been using as a test encounter the very first trip to Lowtown at night in Act 1. (After the intro to Varric where he returns the money pouch the thief had stolen, I head to the Hightown area exit opposite the Blooming Rose and go to Lowtown at night. In Lowtown, head down the stairs bearing to the right and as you approach the next stairs down an encounter will occur.)

With the 1.02 patch the first couple of staff attacks are very stop start, but not just for Hawke; everyone stops for a half a second, then the game resumes, then stops again, then goes again. At that point it seems to run smoothly for a little while before it stutters again for a bit, and this cycle then repeats throughout the combat.

Running version 1.01 I used the following video settings on a 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1, 10Gb RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5870, OXS 10.6.7).

[VideoOptions]FullScreen=1
ResolutionWidth=2560
ResolutionHeight=1440
RefreshRate=60
PresentThreshold=5
UseVSync=1
UseTrilinearFiltering=0
UseTripleBuffering=1
UseDesktopGamma=0
Gamma=1
TexturePack=1
EnableShadows=1
AntialiasingLevel=4
EnableLatentQueries=0
EnableSSAO=1
EnableHighQualityBlur=1
EnableDiffusionDOF=1
UseDirectX11Renderer=0
AnisotropicFilteringLevel=4
GraphicsDetailLevel=1
ForceLowSettings=0
DisableMRT=0
DisableAspectRatioCorrection=0

whilst also using the HighRes texture pack as per <http://social.biowar...6647414-1.html>

I was able to run these settings perfectly smoothly. It is only after installing the 1.02 patch that this stuttering has occurred.

Thinking that I was giving the graphics card too much work to do I have tried adjusting the video settings to get rid of this problem, with little success. The only thing that worked was changing the graphic detail level to 0. This makes the game look dull, and so I am very reluctant to do this.

Whilst not game breaking, I am finding this sufficiently irritating that I am contemplating reverting to version 1.01.

Same thing here. Running with the high res pack seem to be slower after the 1.02 update :-(

Does this only happen with the hi-res graphics? Also, does starting a brand new game make any difference?

It stutters for me even with the low quality textures. Restarting the client fixes it. (so far?)

I get the stutter in the introduction section of a new game, it seems to be a memory handling issue the way it staggers for a bit, runs smooth then staggers again. Its most noticeable during combat but I've seen it happen during busy cutscenes too, like when Flemeth first appears and shifts.

Removing the high res textures and lowering the graphics options didn't prevent its frequency at all.

I worry the cider wrapper doesn't like the latest changes made to the exe for pc's direct X 11 issues.

Removing the HighRes textures from the override folder seemed to make a small difference as I recall, but the stutter was still evident in 1.02 whereas it was not in 1.01.

What surprised me most was that reducing the resolution from 2560x1440 to 1280x720 (the lowest 16:9 resolution offered) made no difference. This is a massive decrease in the workload for the GPU (3.7 million pixels to 0.9 million pixels, a reduction of 75%), suggesting that it is not the GPU being overworked that is the problem.

Starting a new game did not effect the issue. The stutter was evident right from the beginning (including cut scenes). I mentioned the combat in Lowtown as that was the first extreme example where there was no doubt that the performance was significantly worse than with 1.01.

The only setting I found that made the problem vanish was to reduce the graphic detail via the game from high to low.

Installed 1.2 a couple of days ago and have been testing it out.  There's a little stuttering at the beginning of combat but other than that it's running ok.

specs: iMac, Intel Core i7, 2.8 GHz, 8 GB, ATI Radeon HD 4850

Couldn't test the high res textures because I never installed them. Don't think my graphics card could handle them.

I'm also having the sutter issue at the start of combat. I initially thought fire effects were causing it, but I think it's just a coincidence that I started using a fire mage right about the same time I installed 1.02

iMac, 2.93GHz i7, 8 GB, ATI Radeon HD 5750, OS X 10.6.7

Given the limited number of mac configurations floating around, this should be -extremely- easy for BioWare to reproduce. This is a new issue in 1.02.

HIgh-res textures, 4x multisampling, 4x aniso. Haven't tried cutting anything back, yet, since this wasn't a problem prior to 1.02 with identical settings... That said, I'll try eliminating aniso or something and see what happens.

Stuttering at the start of combat seems to occur regardless of video settings.

Edit: Doesn't seem to occur for me outside of Act 1... Can anyone else give an update?
