Ok, making my version of the arcane warrior.  Just having trouble deciding what weapon setup to use.  weapon+shield, dualwield, or twohander.

Hitting things hasnt been a big problem so far, so Im not worried about twohanders slower attack speed.  Dualwield I could see the benefits when having a couple weapon buffs on.  Sword and shield is the most conservative one.

Basically what should I be using, currently I am trying dualwield, seems ok, a previous game I did twohander (didnt complete it, was just getting a feel for the class).

If this game wasnt so vague with its info, Id know what weapons are best for me (if It could have a dps window, that would be wonderful....)

Since the AW buffs give a flat additive bonus to damage, as do mage weapon buffs and runes you slot, you are better off attacking as fast as possible.

Anything but 2 hander, yes, I know it looks cool. Without the 2 handed talents you will do more damage with a one handed wep. Also, there are some buckler shields with no fatigue cost and some decent stat boosts.

Spellweaver (ArcWar-exclusive sword) is a longsword. Just FYI.

1h w/ shield is my personal preference. I tried briefly with other setups, but have found myself always going back with the shield.

Sword and board (or axe, or mace) is what most people go with. Two handed definitely works, but you're sacrificing defense. Of course when you're walking around with 92 defense and 55 armor that starts to not matter quite so much, and the 6 defense give or take that you'll get from a meaty shield won't really make too much of a difference. Ultimately, I just can't find a two handed weapon that I like more than Spellweaver, and thus I use it almost exclusively.

P.s., Arcane Warrior is imba and I love it.

No, you are sacrificing dps going with a two hander too. Without the 2 handed talents, standing there auto attacking with one is a dps loss.

I went dual weiding myself. Figured that with telekenitic weapons buff, Wynne's or Morrigan's elemental weapon buff and elemental damage runes, hitting as many times and as fast as possible makes for a really potent dps potential for my AW. I could have gone light armor but I really loved the look of the Commander's Armor so and my elf being the fashionista he is....

Im making my AW/BM right now and am probably going to go with the Spellweaver + Shield for now, although when my con is a little higher I think I might try out the duel weild...either way AW is overly stacked and should be able to kill anything with ease.

Spellweaver + dagger... with runes in it is my fave but my first play with my rouge wynn used a 2-handed axe for some very nice dmg when she wasn't healing the pt,

I prefer dual wielding overall. I finished my first run as an Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer dual wielding, my second as an Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage with a two hander, and I found the dual wielding to be a lot more fun, better looking finishers and higher attack speed just suited me. Spellweaver+Dead Thaig Dagger from Shale's quest is a *great* combo.

I would use just a single blade (spellweaver) but I despise the animations for sword+shield. I'd pay for DLC that gave us a unique set of animations for wielding a single blade in two hands that wasn't the boat-oar swinging of a greatsword.

Well you get penalties for using two handed weapons and shields with no talents.

I'm not sure if you get penalties to your main hand weapon if you duel wield or if it's just the off hand?

If you only get penalties for your off hand the answer is clear but if you get it to your man hand as well one might consider just going with 1 weapon.

Anyone know the answer to this?

I'm pretty sure both hands receive a penalty with DW.

I have an AW/SH who uses the Starmetal greatsword from the warden's keep expansion. It's very awesome. He lays down the dps in a very nice way and I can throw a group heal every now and then without loosing too much mana. If things get harrowing I remove combat magic and play the healer, but that doesn't really happen often. I have tried 1h/shield & duel wielding, but I always come back to the 2h. It's just so nice

Yeah you get penalized on the offhand weapon damage without the dual wield talents. Personally I haven't found Spellweaver yet but I'd like to try it out with some of the builds mentioned on these forums.

hmm...so has anyone confirmed whether you have greater chances of hitting with a two handed weapon over a single handed weapon?

I have a level 13 Arcane Warrior and I just got the the Wardern Commander's armor from the WK dlc, and thats what i plan to be wearing for now at least.

I have pumped points into WILL and MAG and plan maybe to put some in CONST if I decide to go Blood Mage as well. But hearing how some people seem to be hitting hoplessly with melee has got me thinking should I be saving some attribute points to put into DEX?

Why are people having varied expereinces with melee hitting?

I was planning on using SPELLWEAVER for one weapon set and a staff for another and the STARFANG single-handed for Alistar but know Im wonderingwether i should create 20handed STARFANG for myself seeing as how I want to have some fun hitting opponents as well.

Alistar is my TANK, Morrigan is my prim. MAGE and Leli as my ARCHER. Im planning to be a support MELEE fighter and a support/CC MAGE.

So yea, do I need to put points into DEX to achieve the desired role effectively? or What spells do i need to improve melee attack rating?

Without weapon talents there is a penalty to DW. B/c of that, and b/c I liked the idea of a really survivable AW, I went with sword/shield. AW's generally have trouble hitting things without help. My AW pumped Magic to around 60, then the rest went into Dex for defense and to hit bonuses.

Also had Bard Song going, Miasma (which lowers enemy defense, so basically an attack boost), and rally (pre PC patch broken-ness). My hit rate was 86% I think. Used Spellweaver Longsword as my weapon, and NO staff so i could insta-cast fireball and CoC by switching weapon sets.

IMO sword and board is better since it gives you a chance to use one of the 4 shields that have stamina regen during combat (Fade Wall, Dead Coat of Arms, Warden's Tower Shield or Duncan's shield) all of which add 1 stamina (or mana for AW's) regen. This allows you to use multiple sustainables that drain mana (e.g. shimmering shield, haste, cleansing aura). With Andruil's blessing, Wade's superior Dragon Bone and one of these you can run haste and either the aura or shimmering shield without net mana loss. Also you can use warden commanders plate and spellweaver instead of the superior dragonbone set, but i think that dragon bone + starfang is better overall.

*edit* I was looking on the wiki and saw a light helm called logrunner's helm that give 1 stamina regen as well...anyone know where this is dropped? I'd like to find it and test to see if you can keep haste, aura, and shimmering shield up with that superior dragonbone, spellweaver, Andruil's blessing and one of the + stamina regen shields...that's + 5 total so it may be enough.

What are the disadvantages of JUST holding a single handed sword - over having a sword and shield or a sword and dagger?

Would you have a higher attack rating with the single sword over sword+dagger or the sword+shield?

I personally roll with the sword and board as the only reason I went AW was to give myself the buffed defense.

Hmm....Fair enough.

Just wondering though, those who use shield and sword was your AW the tank of your group? Becuase I have Alistar in my group, and so Its not likely that Ill be swarmed around so a shield doesnt really factor so much for me (Also at the aesthetics of  having two armoured characters with sword and shield seems a bit repetitive).

One reason I went AW was so I can ocassionaly come in close range and get one of those nice kill animations too. So attack rating is on my mind a bit more rather than just being a solid fortress...

@ DIO: As I understand it from the oh so correct manual, having a 1h weapon only gives no bonuses or minuses. Having a 1h/board adds to fatigue, but doesn't impose any attack penalties. DW w/out any talents gives you penalties to damage, attack rating.
2h I assume has penalties, but I don't know.
I had Al in my group as the tank... my AW would use BM Blood Wound at the start of the fight, deactivate BM, and wade in. I would then control a rogue to pp like mad before everything died. Had Wynne as a SH/AW. Worked out fine, but I was playing on Normal and really just discovering game mechanics. Not an optimal setup or anything.

Thanks for the breakdown!

Thats the kind of info I was looking for. Now just to find out about the penalties of two-handed weapons without talents.

Right now, I have Alistar tanking, Leli as range damaged and my AW and Morrigan following up with Frost spells and Prison spells. 2 Winters grasp, 2 CoC, 2 Force Fields, 2 crushing prisons and a bit lightning from her and Fire from me and Im blanketing the field with CC and spell damage.  When my mana pool is getting low or most of my spells are on cooldown I THEN Turn on COMBAT MAGIC and switch to melee  to chop down the crippled enemies.

Its working fine so far, but Im only around lvl 14 (on hard) so Im not sure how that style will work well in the higher lvl battles...
