The launch of a game that had more bugs and problems than this one?

I remember WW2 online was a pretty awful launch.

I can't remember any other game at launch that was so awfully plagued with problems, can anyone list some games that were just as horrible or worse?

I dare say I could go back years and list dozens of games that were far worse than DA2 at release. It really is not that bad.

Civ V

Don't get me started - the next in the series I will certainly wait for reviews before buying!

I didn't have that much problem with my first unpatched game of DA2, I read reports here early on about the bonus related bug so didn't use Isabela or Sebastian or armour sets during that playthrough.  The game certainly ran smoothly enough for me and the only bug that annoyed me to any extent was Merrill's cutscenes appearing out of order, but it didn't stop me doing her quests or playing the game.

On the other hand I do have some criticisms of the game which have nothing to do with bugs - not that DA2 is not a fun game, it's just sadly lacking the genius touch and a bit more care (recycled maps etc.) that would have made it a great game, IMO.  Similar can be said about Civ V compared to Civ IV really.

ETA: I don't recall how buggy NWN2 was on release, but I do remember it chewing up the PC I had at the time and spitting it out - the performance and optimisation was appalling, iirc.  In many ways, that's more frustrating and memorable than a few bugs that will get patched.

Oh, and to add to the list....
NWN linux version

That was a very finicky beast. And never could play the movies. That said, I:m glad they did it. ...And it even got some post-release care, fixing some of the problems. Somehow I don't expect there to be a DA2 linux release. Gonna require Wine or a VM.. and I don't expect that to work right off the bat.

I was playing it within minutes of release... too bad it had so many problems initially. I did a little clock mod early on for Civ V (as it should never have been removed from the options in the first place).

I've started playing it again recently and I'm still annoyed by a few things.
  • Mods break achievements.
  • Playing with mods is a totally different menu section and every time you go there it requires you agree to the exact same message. Every. Single. Time.
  • Resource Hog. I have a decently high end system. That game slows to a crawl by the end game. Not to mention game load times if you play on anything bigger than standard...
Those things above I would call broken. Absolutely broken. There are some design decisions that I also find a bit lacking...
  • Modding is a pain. Even lacking a toolset, DA2 is still easier. Maybe it has improved but when I first started modding Civ V there was almost zero information about events triggered, how to include files, where to find components, etc.
  • Lua. Why Lua? If you're going to go with a "standard" scripting language, why not go with something widely known like JavaScript?
  • One unti per tile isn't a bad idea, but I simply cannot understand how you can have a military unit and a civilian unit on the same tile, but not two civilian units or two military units. It would make far more sense to make it a blanket two units per tile and disregard the type of unit.

Well... given this is a bioware forum, it seems a bt silly to complain about Civ V... Still... kind of a sore spot that one.

Probably right re. the complaining about Civ V here, but it is definitely a sore spot for me and so I'm going to moan (even if it's just so that DA2 isn't the only game I have complaints with!) - I pre-ordered long in advance when the official site still advertised that it would ship with a hotseat MP mode - 6 or so months down the line after release I'm still waiting.  And other forms of multiplayer are still dreadful.  It's the one thing a strategy game, historically a turn based strategy game at that, should be able to get right, but no.  I've not touched the thing in months, because I like to play against my husband and MP in all its forms is still broken, 6 or 7 months after release.

I've never been big on MP civ, though It would be interesting to try sometime if they ever fix it. I've been playing the series since the original civilization. Civ IV, particularly after the BTS expansion, was quite good (and easier to mod in some ways). The sad thing is that because there was so much dissatisfaction with Civ V at release and its extremely slow bug fixes, the mod community seems to be dying off. Everyone is off working on other games instead of wasting time on Civ V. It's too bad really, because while most of the game concepts are good, the technical execution was just so weak.

^ Long-standing Civ fan here too, right back to the original game. Civ IV was (and still is) an amazing game, and BTS + the Rise of Mankind + ROM: A New Dawn mods are absolutely fantastic. (My favourite iteration prior to that was Civ II: Test of Time). Whenever my husband and I both have a few days at home together, which is quite rare, we like to have a Civ tournament - but we went back to Civ IV while waiting for V MP to be fixed, and it's been so long at this point it is irredeemable as far as I'm concerned - I've spent literally weeks if not months at a time playing previous installments, but the few redeeming features (love the idea of City States, and the new way of handling cultural borders for example, and the social policies thing is a good idea in theory but should be more flexible) in the latest one could not make up for how broken it is, both in terms of MP, and the diplomatic AI in SP - neither provides a satisfying experience.

Comparing that to DA2 - I may not like all of the design choices in DA2, and yes it had some bugs on release, but the biggest bugs have now been patched, there will be another patch to follow, and although it's not the DA2 I might have wished for in my dreams, it is at least playable.

Agreed on Civ 2 as well.

DA2 has been, for the most part pretty good. I hadn't played DA:O/Awakenings yet so I ended up playing those before DA2 so I came a bit late to the party. I've only been playing DA2 for about 3 weeks now. In all honesty, I still haven't finished it yet. I seem to get about halfway through Act 2 before I change mods, or want to try something different character-wise..

Aside from quest bugs, DA2 has been quite stable. Beat it on version 1.00 with no crashes.
