If Dragon Age: Origins was the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, then Dragon Age 2 was the spiritual successor to Jade Empire.
Thoughts?

Except Dragon Age 2 does not have a cameo by John Cleese as Sir Roderick Ponce Von Fontlebottom The Magnificent Bastard.

Most likely the combat style. Jade Empire was more button mashy than other Bioware games at the time.

I don't see it.

pretty much, the simplifications and combat, even the art style kind of remind me of JE

Oh, I see then. Because the rest of it never really reminded me of JE.

While both good games, JE and DA have nothing in common other than both being fantasy BIO games. Just like DA1, NWN, BG, BG2, overrated KOTOR, etc.

Must be a console thing. DA2 isn't very button mashy on the PC. At least not like JE was.

DA2 on console does remind me a bit of Jade Empire
DA2 on PC doesn't remind me of JE at all

That explains it. I thought Jade Empire was pretty dumbed down as well, compared to previous BioWare games. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it (unlike DA2).

Hmm I thought it was the spiritual successor to Dynasty Warriors to be honest.

The art team was from JE, if it counts for anything.

Comparing to Jade Empire isn't necessarily a bad thing. It was well-received enough that years later people still really want a sequel.
I honestly hadn't noticed the similarities to JE, but now that it's pointed out to me the art styles do seem similar. I play on the console, so combat is defiantly very reminiscent of JE. I wonder if that was intentional.

I think you may be projecting; I loved Jade Empire. Thanks for the well thought-out reply.

No I think Dragon Age 2 is the literal successor to Dragon Age: Origins.

I thought so as well, with the DA series in general and more DAO than DA2.
Even some themes have curious parallelisms: golems animated through killing people, the whole theme of trust and treachery, the ghoul tavern and the reaper town of Heaven, spirits possessing and using hosts (Wild Flower and Anders in DA2), slavers!, being the last of your wiped-out order with the power to end the big bad guy (grey warden in DAO, spirit monk in JE), companion NPC turning out to be royalty,...
