I've just finished my first playthrough of Dragon Age II and I encountered my toughest choice in the game. Either kill Anders for nuking the Chantry and sparking a war between the mages and templars, or lose Sebastian and (potentially) have him seek vengeance on Hawke and Anders sometime in the future. What made this choice so hard was because I like both Anders and Sebastian and I hate having campanions leave my party forever. After sitting at my keyboard for about 10 minutes I decided to have Anders rejoin my party at the expense of Sebastian swearing vengeance on me.

Congrats to Bioware for making a situation where I had to truely think of what I wanted. Although I feel bad for Anders for those that killed him.

Anyway my point is: what was the hardest decision in Dragon Age II for you? What made it so hard?

The hardest decision for me was whether or not to take Carver to the Deep Roads. I didn't know anything about him getting tainted/becoming a Grey Warden/being left behind and going Templar.

Having your mother begging you not to take your brother in to danger, while he's so adamant on going and is pretty handy in a fight made it a difficult thing to decide upon. I took him with me, but thankfully I had Anders with me as well (at this point I figured having a Healer who could also sense Darkspawn and had been in the Deep Raods before would be handy), so Carver went and got Warden'd. Though that in itself was a hard thing to do- he might live, but then I'd never really see him again.

Yeah, definitely this moment for me. To complicate matters, I romanced Anders my first time playing this part. I naively went along with his Justice quest thinking this would help him. I got bad feelings when he started trying to give away his most treasured possessions. And even then, I didn't see him making a move as bold as dark as what he did. It felt like an actual betrayal. While I couldn't condone what he did, I understood his motivations. But I have to say, I was genuinely torn between wanting to see justice done for the innocents in the Chantry and sparing a man who's deeply troubled and possibly not entirely to blame for his actions.

In the end, I spared him, albeit reluctantly. And even running off with him, I think any relationship between him and Hawke is going to be very strained from this point on. I'm also glad I'm not the only one who spent 10 minutes staring at the screen while I deliberated.

It was the same thing for me. Luckily I also brought Anders with me to heal. Maybe on another one of my paythroughs I'll have Bethany join the Circle to see how that turns out.

Most definitely the Anders situation, that was a tough one. I have played thru the game 4 times now and have only killed him once... and vowed to never do that again! It was heartbreaking and i dont care for Sebastian one bit so it doesnt bother me that you lose him if you save Anders. Anders is such a great complex character imo... ill keep him, always lol!

Whether or not to take your sibling with you to the Deep Roads is a tough one. The first time trying to decide if Anders should die or not was tough. I initially just told him to leave. Then later when he showed up at the final group session before Orsino goes full stupid Anders was all buddy, buddy with me. I had no option to say, "No, you're alive to fix this mess or I'm going to beat the Justice out of you." I reloaded an earlier save and killed him. Now I kill him each time I reach that point.

I'm normally a believer in justice (the virtue not the spirit) and would love for Aveline to lock him up and such, but since you can't get any in this game, it's murder knife time.

I'd also take an option to make him tranquil. That's a fate worse than death.

The Anders decision wasn't tough at all for me. I figured out he was making a bomb from the ingredient list (manure, saltpeter) and since I couldn't stop it, I decided following the Justice quest that if he did something that killed the Grand Cleric he would die for it. Simple as that.

It was the same line the Arishok crossed the second the vicount's head rolled down the stairs. No matter how much I liked him prior, he crossed the line he didn't get to come back from.

The Overall Mage/Templar choice was harder for me. My sympathy was towards the mages, but you can do more overall damage control on the Templar side. Not helped by the fact the mages go out of their way to make you repeatedly regret doing them favors.

Taking the sibling to the deep roads was very tough as well. I ended up taking Bethany, so lucky I brought Anders too.

Killing Anders while playing a non-cheating Rogue; needed a healer to finish the game, or my poor playstyle required many more potions than I had aquired. I tried to kill him for his crime, but so many injuries required a reversal in that decision.

Romance options: none for me this game. I was not intrigued by either Merrill or Isabella as a male PC, nor Anders, Fenris, or Sebastion as a female character. Plus, Lilliana looked available, and not wise to cross her off early....

P,S. I should have never tried the Avaline romance; been down the 'Only friends' path far too many times in RL to experience that kind of pain again. OW! My aching heart!

The female mage I played first romanced Anders and naively sent along with everything he did. When it came to crunch time, however, she killed him. That was a hard decision which also took me at least 10 minutes to come to. 'At least I got to be happy for a while.' *sniff*

Ditto.  I love playing a mage, but on the other hand I can't stand Carver (I don't find the rivalry good drama, Carver's just a total douche) and Bethany is awesome.  I don't know how people can let Meredith kill her...  I'd have to leave the room if this was a TV show and that was about to happen.  Through all the evil stuff you can do in DAO and DA2, I think that's the darkest one.

I dislike Carver too, but then we're supposed to... hence the starting rivalry. Carver is a douche.

Carver's got a spark of life to him that I don't feel with Bethany.

Anyway, I had the same difficulty with killing Anders. My first run, I romanced him, too, so here I am being told that I have to either kill my lover or let a murderer go free. I really did spend some time considering it before making a decision. I couldn't bring myself to knife him, but I was disappointed in Hawke's dialogue in the Circle before battle with him seemed to basically absolve him of any responsibility or blame. Just a line of dialogue saying that there is a lot to discuss after the battle with Meredith would make it feel better. And when I haven't romanced him, I do realize that not only will he become a martyr if he dies, he WANTS death at that point. I'd sooner show him a cruel mercy rather than slit his throat.

I've started a mage, but I haven't gotten him even to the ogre in the prologue because I don't particularly want to see that scene.

Pretty much this, to the letter, for me as well.
It was also hard because I really thought you could cure him and I desperately wanted this to be true and had problems accepting this was not the case (I still do, DLC anyone?).

Sebastians reaction made me want to slap him, he had been boring me as a player for 2 acts already the only thing that kept me from outright disliking the man was that up until now he had been a pleasant enough guy, not particularly interesting to be around, but he wasn`t a jerk and seemed to be fairly reasonable and he and my character got along well enough.
I was on the friendship path so he was going on and on about the maker and forgiveness and his vows to the chantry and respect for Elthina, a woman who had previously touted that killing for the purpose of revenge is murder.
Enter chantry-boom, I understand his devastation at her death, but he is basically eager to go on a rampage against a bunch of people who had nothing to do with Elthinas death for the purpose of getting revenge for a woman who probably wouldn`t want him to seek vengeance for her to begin with, in addition to dictating to you the nature of your relationship with said woman.
And all the while he has the gall to villainize Anders for his actions? Puh-lease, pot calling kettle.
To add insult to injury, you hardly get to say anything to him during this exchange - argh!

I don't even like to play mage. But granted, mage in DA2 is more fun than in DA:O where it is just boring. But mage interested me because of the mage templar conflict after my first playthrough where I played warrior. So I played through, noticed how it didn't matter and decided it's not worth to go with Carver instead of Bethany. Well I never said it is a very difficult choice, just the most difficult choice in DA2. The others are even easier.

The attachment or dislike of the siblings is a bit odd to me. My complaint is my lack of exposure to them. I see them in act one and then....at the end of the game. Bethany being nice; Carver being a jerk. None of that matters as they are hardly involved in the majority of the game.

Ahh, touche.  DA2's choices are much easier than DAO's.  Partially because they don't matter.  I always put Orzammar off til last in DAO because I can never decide between the two losers we get to pick.  I almost wish there was an option to take advantage of the wording (the paragon says the Warden may chose) to give the crown to like, Oghren.  Or just some random dwarf.  "Garin:  Has anyone seen my sandwich?"  "Warden:  Congratulations.  You're the king of Orzammar."

I keep meaning to try that mod over on DANexus that lets you pick which sibling lives so I can have a mage with Bethany.  Always worried something will explode though (besides the Chantry).  I could forgive some of Carver's jackassery but using Bethany and Leandra's deaths as a weapon goes beyond the usual sibling rivalry.  It's a crime against nature that templar sided Hawke can have Bethany executed but mage sided Hawke never gets a chance to even punch Carver.

Killing Anders was difficult choice? Hell it was the easiest choice I had to make in whole game. That wanker lied to you and then went and blew people who were innocent and then saying "It was all for good of mages" THE HELL!!! Thats like some terrorist nuking piece of from world and then they are all like "We did to improve the image we have now"

Also Anders was bad character to begin with so no difficulty in stabbin that wanker :)

My hardest part was when I had to decide if the child killing lunatic should live or die, and that was only because I had trouble deciding if I want +points for Fenris or Isabella..

Anders... PFFT!!!

AFAIK, one may actually kill Carver by taking him to the Deep Roads by not taking Anders, too; an option some may wish to consider.

I found the mage/templar choice the hardest because although Hawke sympathized with the Mages, it is also clear that giving them complete freedom is problematic (tevinter)...

but killing Anders... that was pretty much a no brainer for me. He's not survived a playthrough yet.

I thought about that.  Unfortunately, it breaks Leandra's heart and I just can't break her right before Quentin breaks her everything.

It's not a question of giving them complete freedom, it's a question of killing everyone in the Gallows.  It may well lead to mage freedom eventually, but siding with the templars ends the same way.  The real fail is that if you side with the templars you can spare surrendering mages.  If you side with the mages you never get a chance to talk down any templars.  Even Cullen thinks this RoA is unjust and he's about as close to her viewpoint as they get without being a criminal themselves.  Surely after mowing down the first 40 templars it'd be reasonable to yell at the next charge "stand down, do not try to kill these people unjustly and you won't have to die!"

@Rifneno I'm really just talking about the difficulty I had making the decision in my first playthrough as both arguments have merit. I agree that the way this choice was handled could have been much better.

Ahh, my mistake.  Yeah, things are a lot different on that first playthrough hehe...  as stanch an Anders supporter as I am now, I killed him the first time through without thinking twice about it.  Took me a while of analyzing things to decide I didn't think he deserved it.

I wonder how many players that don't read this stuff on the Internet tried reloading and doing things differently thinking they could save Leandra...
