It's not unheard of for soldiers to loot the battlefield for non-essentials like cash, cigarettes, and the like however.

They only do that when the battle is over, though.

You won't see a soldier in the middle of a mission crouching to loot his enemies' corpses. The mission is not over, so why would you burden yourself with stuff you might not even use?

Wait a minute! you're telling me the dragon age games are mindless CoD games? I've picked up so many weapons... didn't know it was that bad!

True enough, though I'd still like the ability to search corpses for credits, medigel, and clips, at least the ones that would have such things. I get that a husk wouldn't likely have any of the above, nor a varen, but enemies like an indoctrinated Batarian probably would.

That's for the sake of convenience.

Like another poster said before me, on games like those you don't have a base to stash your stuff, and you're continously moving around a large map, while on Mass Effect you go out, beat the mission and then go back to the ship.

And yes, it is unrealistic. When a soldier is handed his equipment, everything is taken into account. They try to balance the amount of rounds, guns and everything else so that he will have the necessary tools to tackle the mission while not being too heavily burdened.

Right, I enjoy sifting through useless crap that completely takes me out of the immersion ala ME 1. That was ME 1's only pretty major flaw.

The only game that I enjoy inventories are Elder Scrolls, Fallout because of all the rare loot around the map.

Mass Effect is a third person shooter, not an RPG.

Furthest I can go back for PC RPGs is Ultima Underworld. Good times.

Medigel and clips, sure. But they should abolish credits and shops altogether. Shepard should have an unlimited expense account in ME3, given the situation.

Yeah! Diablo is a much better example of a role playing game what with its complete lack of role playing! ...Wait... <_<

Well I won't disagree to a degree there, it's always been a pet peeve of mine that merchants expect the guy who's trying to save them from being eaten by Cthulhu to pay for the tools needed to do so.

a) Where did you get the "no inventory" story? Did I miss it in the GI article?
B) What would the exact benefit of an inventory be? At the moment you equip everything at the start of the mission. An inventory would allow you to change equipment on the go and make the gameplay dependant on doing so. I missed a lot of features from ME1 in ME2, but changing mods during missions for different purposes was not one of them.

Hey, just because we play RPGs doesn't make us "RPG fans." To earn that title we have to like every stereotypical feature of the western CRPG.

As for your list... impressive, but no KotOR? No Ultimas besides Underworld? No Might and Magics or Wizardrys? No Starflight? You've got some catching up do to. :P

Well you are gonna need to buy schematics on occasion (that's what you do in ME2), so that's why Shepard has credits.  There's also the totally necessary model ships, fish, and space hamster to buy.  Can't miss those!
